Description

hearEQ builds your EQ skills to professional levels using custom ear training exercises, created just for you from your favorite songs. Simple, powerful, and fast, hearEQ is perfect for ear training on the go. Named one of "The best iPhone and iPad apps for musicians" (www.apppicker.com), here's what the experts have to say about hearEQ:

"When I found hearEQ, I knew this was a game-changer. From the ease of use and the ability to use your own music selections, hearEQ is perfectly designed to be the go-to choice for developing your ear. My students have shown tremendous improvements in mixing and productions, and I completely attribute this to hearEQ. Thanks Ten Kettles! Keep up the great work. You are making a difference!" -Chandler Bridges, Ph.D., Professor (The Los Angeles Film School); Audio engineer (Will Smith, Aaliyah, Johnny Mathis, P-Diddy, J-Lo, Bette Midler, LeAnn Rimes, and more) with two Grammy-winning albums.

“After half an hour with the app I had a noticeable improvement to my score, but I was also thinking in much clearer terms too!” -Tim Webb, www.discchord.com

“This handy app is one of the greatest tools I've seen for helping you hear exactly how EQ adjustments affect your sound. Wish I would have had this when I was first learning how to mix live sound.” -James Wasem, www.greatchurchsound.com

"hearEQ…makes the experience of ear training enjoyable enough to seem like fun. [It's] a great educational tool." -Tom Flint, Sound on Sound: The World's Best Recording Technology Magazine

“The principle behind hearEQ is beautifully straightforward…even with a little repetition, things do start to improve and I suspect if you were to build some hearEQ into your daily musical routine, you would soon reap some positive benefits.” -John Walden, www.musicappblog.com

----------------------------------

Every frequency range has a color, a quality, a character. For sound engineers, musicians, and other enthusiasts, knowing how to apply this to an equalizer (EQ) can make a transformational change to your sound—whether you're mixing a live concert, a recording, or even playing music through iTunes. (VIDEO @ www.hearEQ.com)

It's a simple app with a powerful promise: if you learn the qualities of each frequency band—for example, cutting 4kHz puts sound in the background—then you can make equalization work for you, and truly transform your sound into something professional and beautiful.

hearEQ uses your favorite songs on your device to create custom ear training exercises that a) teach you all about frequency bands, and b) help you really hone your EQ skills. A standard 10-band or 30-band* equalizer is used, just like you'd find in iTunes and on many professional sound mixers. Your song will be played back with a simple equalization applied—and you guess what it was!

> Was it really clear, maybe a bit hollow? Could be a 1000 Hz cut.

> Was it muddy? Maybe that's a 500 Hz boost.

> Was it really present, almost too in-your-face? Sounds like a 4kHz boost.

Ten questions, ten frequencies, and then you get a score. Want to focus on just a few frequency bands to start? You can do that too. Keep at it, and you'll be an EQ master in no time.

Want to learn more? Check out our site and the hearEQ video at www.hearEQ.com.

*The 30-band equalizer is part of the "Advanced EQ" module, available as an in-app purchase within hearEQ.

NOTE: hearEQ works with any track on your device, with the exception of tracks that prevent our EQ processing, such as DRM-protected tracks and cloud tracks (e.g., Apple Music). That said, hearEQ ships with several built-in practice tracks, so you'll be able to start EQing right away!

The library has been completely rebuilt with lots of new features:
• Browse your music library by artist, album, or song
• Quickly lookup any song with the new search function
• Open a music file from the Files app
• Use hearEQ to open audio files from within other apps (e.g., Voice Memos)
• Swipe right on any track to star it—and then access it quickly anytime
I hope you like the new library! Please get in touch anytime if you have any questions, comments, or feature requests for hearEQ. I read everything that comes in and will get back to you (almost always) by the next business day. Happy EQing, -Alex

P.S., For those who want to EQ their Apple Music tracks, I totally understand! I want you to be able to as well. Unfortunately Apple doesn't allow processing of their Apple Music tracks right now, but I'm keeping an eye on this. If anything changes on their end, I'd love to bring Apple Music support to hearEQ.

What's new? Lots! Here's a run-down:
• New tracks are now available to all hearEQ users. Advanced EQ users get some added bonus tracks too! (All users can still EQ any of their on-device tracks.)

• If you get a question wrong in the quiz, you can now compare your guess to the correct answer. Just tap the EQ setting you want to hear! (Shout-out to our wonderful users for this feature request.)

• The Learn screen now offers a snap-to-gain option for Advanced EQ users. Choose to snap the EQ effect to the nearest 1 dB, 3 dB, 6 dB, or 12 dB.

• No more iPhone landscape. Now that you're able to interact with your quiz answers, things were just getting a little too tight on a sideways screen—especially with 30 bands! Landscape is still fully supported on iPad. (Sad to see iPhone landscape go? Drop me an email at alex[at]tenkettles[dot]com.)

• No more third-party analytics! All frameworks used in hearEQ are now home-made. Your data is yours. Period.

I hope you like the new version! As always, get in touch at alex[at]tenkettles[dot]com with any feedback, questions, comments, or even just to share your story about ear training. I'd love to hear from you and will (almost always) get back to you by the next work day, -Alex

What’s new? Everything! We re-built hearEQ from the ground up, and here are just a few of the things you’ll notice:
1) Built-in tracks: Not everyone keeps music on their devices, and we want to make sure these folks can start using hearEQ right away too!
2) Scrubbable audio player: You can now jump around tracks in both Learning and Quiz mode!
3) Brand new experience: We want the app to be easy to use right from the get-go, so we built a much more intuitive design complete with the option to access “help” from pretty much any screen.
4) Fully responsive: Portrait, landscape, iPhone SE, iPad Pro—no matter which iOS device you use and how you hold it, hearEQ will adapt.

Like what we’ve done? Please consider giving us a 5-star review on iTunes. Want to see more changes? Drop us an email and we’d love to hear your ideas. -Alex

New “sliding” learn page, two new user-requested add-ons, and various performance enhancements.

LEARN PAGE. A decibel (dB) is a measure of loudness, so the greater the dB, the greater the EQ effect. Experiment with different dB levels on our brand new LEARN PAGE! Just slide your finger up and down on each frequency, and you'll hear the filter come in and out.

ADD-ONs. We’ve been getting some excellent feedback from our users, and have acted on that feedback by integrating two new add-ons:
> Want to train your ears just like the experts? "Pink noise" is a special type of sound used for ear-training, and this add-on integrates seamlessly with hearEQ.
> Once you’ve mastered hearEQ’s normal exercises, grab the "Advanced EQ" add-on to hone your EQ skills with lower-dB filters.

As always, we love to hear your feedback, so drop us an email at [email protected] (or tweet at @tenkettles) to share your comments, suggestions, and feedback. Like what we’re doing? Pop a review up on the AppStore. :)

Absolute Lifesaver
This app is awesome– it’s the only one I’ve seen that quizzes you on boosts AND cuts and it’s so easy to use your own music. It’s best if you don’t use phone speakers, I do it in my car and with headphones. It’s super fun and easy to do for a long time. My ear has noticeably improved. The price is insanely worth it if you’re dedicated to improving your mixes. This is a company that obviously cares for musicians– hearEQ, beat mirror, and Waay are all such valuable tools for improving your ear and musicianship. Genuinely, thank you!!
Sk8mstr,
Just too expensive for what you get
I really liked it at first but for paying $6 the advanced eq and pink noise should all be included and it sorta ticked me off that it wasn’t to be honest. I mean the entire gta game on mobile is worth that much and I could load any song into fl studio and pull up the eq and test myself that way for free. Despite that I would still actually use the app because it is well made but it just doesn’t feel worth it unless it was all included and now I sorta just feel urged to use it just to get my money’s worth out of it. No disrespect to the creator because you did do a good job making the app and I guess I shouldve looked into it more before buying it anyways but for $5.99 there shouldn’t be any micro or side transactions whatsoever that is a big enough price to include it all in one package and without that it just feels like $1.99 app at most
blxck airius,
COOL
Not sure why but every time I try to open the app it immediately crashes/closes making it unusable. I uninstalled/reinstalled it several times with no luck. iOS version is up to date etc... Please fix?

UPDATE: the app finally opens and functions fine now, i thought it was due to an updated version since my last review but since the Dev responded and i dont see any changes in the Version History timeline i'm not sure what happened; but i'm glad i can finally use the app! Gave it 4 stars for the nice interface and good customer service, will update my rating again once i experience the app's learning results and methods etc.
HAPLO_76,
Right to the point. Love it.
Does exactly what it is intended for while keeping it simple and bug free. I especially like using songs from my own library for the learning process and the quizzes.

Edit: i have one request for the developer. Please allow the quiz to go beyond 10 questions so that i can enjoy songs from my library all the way through. I would pay extra to unlock a feature like that. That's how much of a difference i think it'll make in the experience.
Sudara,
This app is amazing...
I haven’t wanted to write an app review before using HearEQ. But I’m telling all my musician/audio friends about it, so it feels only fair!

I used to use Golden Ears back in the day for audio ear training. HearEQ is like what Golden Ears wanted to be when it grew up. Lean, mean, contextually applicable machine. The ability to load up your own music, actively train and quiz on is game-changing. Doing this while outside of the studio environment (my favorite place to assess mixes) is a dream.

Lots of thoughtful detail helps you train exactly what you want to train. I went straight to buy the advanced EQ module, IMO this should be priced at 30 bucks not 3. So valuable. And so hard :)

TenKettles/Alex is my hero. Thanks for making this, it’s directly responsible for improving my hearing and skill as an engineer.
...DreamCatcher...,
Really Good App, Just One thing Missing..
I really enjoy using this app. It helps fine tune my ears for better beat production. I just wish I could add song to the add song feature without having to connect to a computer. Not having a MacBook with my iPhone makes this process very difficult. Maybe a feature where you could add songs directly from iCloud or files would be nice, it would definitely deserve 5 stars. Other than that the app is perfection.
Philbodjfjs,
Great App
This app is perfect if you are trying to practice identifying frequencies and problem solving when it comes to EQ. Being able to practice with songs in your iTunes library is a nice feature as well. Another helpful feature that I discovered is using the 30 band EQ (upgrade) practice mode to identify where certain instruments sit in the mix. 5/5
Aftab Hafeez - RollBD Music,
Brilliant, fun, effective
Though it’s only my second day using this app, it’s quickly becoming my go-to training tool. The number one things this has over other solutions is the ability to use your own music library, training my ears on much more relevant content.

Would love to see a Mac version to use on my monitors.
breathetho,
Only needs 1 more feature
It’d be really helpful if there was a Compare button after you miss a question on a quiz. That way you could better understand the differences between your guess and the right answer. But I use this daily!
...dhzdhxh,
Actually Pretty Good
Great for learning how the mixing of certain frequencies change the sound of music. Only took off one star for making us pay for pink noise.

Edit: Adding the star back because of how much I'm enjoying using the app and the developer definitely demonstrates their care for the app.
