"Absolutely phenomenal. This is better than any YouTube video, podcast, or music theory book I have read. This truly helps you find an actionable way to put music theory to practice. Within 48 hours using this app I have actually comprehended what is being taught with this app far beyond any previous comprehension for past products. Honestly they could charge more than double the amount and it would be totally worth it." —Artice, May 3, 2022

"It's obvious a lot of time, love and energy has gone into this app. It's very well thought out, easy to follow and keeps you coming back for more. The developer is super friendly and answers any questions you have. It's clear he has a real passion for what he does and genuinely wants to help out. Awesome work all round" —thatboyswiss, Jan. 8, 2019

"The app is very smooth, and a great resource for learning more about music theory. I found the scale exercises to be very helpful, and I suspect I'll go back to them as a way of keeping those skills sharp." —Sean Garland (iOS MARS)

"I have probably spent thousands of dollars perfecting tone on pedals, instruments, amps and apps, posters, printed media, online courses. The BEST PURCHASE has been your Waay app." —A.P., Apr. 1, 2020

Here's what's new in this update:
• Exercise Difficulty. Each exercise in Waay has been tweaked: some are now easier, others are more challenging. But overall I think the skill required to get three stars is now much more consistent from exercise to exercise.
• Backspace Button. Anytime a question has a multi-part answer, you get a backspace button!
Feedback on the changes? Send me an email anytime by tapping "Get in touch" in the sidebar (under "More") and I'll (almost always) get back to you by the next working day. -Alex

P.S., There's some big news coming for Waay. Sign up for the newsletter at tenkettles.com/newsletter to be the first to know (or tap "Free Newsletter" in the sidebar).

Waay now offers syncing between your devices! If you have iCloud enabled (as most of us do), it'll just work. No separate login or setup required. But what if you want to keep your devices unsynced? That's OK too: you can toggle syncing on or off under "More" in the Waay sidebar.

Here's what else is new:
• Reset button. Want to scrap all your progress and start over? Just tap "Reset" in the sidebar.
• Backup/restore. Backups of your progress are now periodically stored on your device, just in case you change your mind about a recent reset!
• Fixed star counts. The max stars in the sidebar should now read 144 (not 150) for all Waay users with a full account.

Questions or comments? Happy to help. Get in touch anytime by tapping "Get in touch" in the Waay sidebar (under "More"). -Alex

In the "Pulling chords" exercise (Progressions I), chords can now be entered in any order. For example, the question "What minor chords are in C major?" can be answered Am, Dm, Em… or Em, Am, Dm… or any of the other four possibilities. Thanks for pointing this one out, Art! New course available! In "Progressions," you'll learn all about chord progressions: how to identify the key of a progression, shortlist possible chords that'll fit, and then use your musical judgment to move forward.

And there's a lot more too, like new intervals and how to build a "ii V" progression. Once you're all done, you'll be able to complete (I'm not kidding) over 2200 chord progressions in a snap. Progressions I & II are now available as a single in-app purchase. Tap the "Courses" button in the sidebar to get started!

Here's what else is new:
• Double-tap videos to jump back 10 s
• All exercises tweaked to avoid occasional repeated questions
• Design improvements
• More efficient video format for smaller app size (even with new courses)
• Tweaks and bug fixes

Do you teach music? Waay now includes a "Teacher Mode" which allows you to access all your lesson content immediately, for maximum flexibility with your students. If instead you're new to music theory and songwriting, we'd recommend sticking with the normal approach—working through the lessons one-at-a-time. But if you want to jump around all the lesson material right away, just tap "Teacher mode" in Waay's sidebar to learn more. Questions or comments? Get in touch at [email protected].

We're really excited about this new version of Waay. One thing we've repeatedly heard from our users is that they want Waay to work offline—no sign-in, login, or anything like that. Just open the app and start learning. We liked this idea too, and so the new Waay supports offline use! But what about all your past progress? It's all imported automatically as soon as you open Waay on a connected device.

Questions or comments? Get in touch at support[at]tenkettles[dot]com.

Superlink245,
Highly underrated app
I think this app is one of the best in the App Store for music theory. I don’t usually comment or give ratings ever, but I just have to make people more aware. I feel that they took a lot of time to make the videos and the games they have to make sure that you actually understand and memorize the lesson all together. I have looked at many videos on music theory and the circle of fifth and I feel that this is the most understanding way that it has been broken down to me. How you can’t continue the lesson unless you’ve reached a certain quota is perfect. The way the lessons are broken down into 5-6 minute videos is great for someone like me who loses his attention too easily. It always kept me coming back and wanting to learn more. The only problem I can see coming from the app is that maybe main hub screen is a little boring and can make you think that you aren’t gonna have fun while learning but I was really surprised when I started watching the first video. I hope to see more lessons in the future from this app!
Jake Curran,
Exactly what I needed
This app is incredible. If you’re anything like me, you’ve been wanting to learn music theory for a while and have been putting it off. Recently, I’ve had the desire to dig deep and really learn music theory. I was searching for a course that was clear, concise, and guided. This app fits the bill 100%. The lessons are very well presented and the exercises are a fun way to test and hone your skills. The developer has done an amazing job by gamifying the process and making your progress feel tangible and substantial. Then there’s the cherry on top: this app is a one-time purchase and the developer doesn’t collect your data! Seriously, this kind of honest business practice is unheard of these days on the App Store. A big thank you to the developer, and his two beagles! SUPPORT THIS MAN!
BlessedCobra,
Amazing app by an amazing developer!
While the pricing has gone up in the past few months for this app, I believe it is well worth it. Music theory for songwriting is simply not taught like this on any other app, making this invaluable. The creator of the app is just one guy, yet he considers ALL customer feedback. For those who can’t afford to purchase the full app, a subscription for a month or two should be enough to get you through all the lessons and get some practice in.

If you’ve been wanting to write your own songs but didn’t have a strong music theory foundation before, this app makes everything simple and practical. I love it!
CindyH16,
What a find!
I’m so glad I chose this app. I’ve tried so many times in the past to learn music theory and have never been successful UNTIL NOW. In just one week, I understand how to build major and minor scales quickly and identify their chords. I’m now working on chord progressions and can’t wait to start applying all of this knowledge to my guitar playing and maybe even my own songs (something I would never have dared to think about before!). The lessons are clear and concise and the exercises are very helpful. I highly recommend Waay for anyone who wants to finally understand music theory! Best money I’ve spent in a very long time.
Greg1ofNone,
Great learning tool
I studied music theory in college and I’ve gained more from this app in a few days than a few semesters in class. There are just a few updates I would love to see to make the app more enjoyable to use. Examples are a erase button for the quizzes. It’s very frustrating attempting to correct mistakes. It would also be nice to have access to the segment rules once the timer runs out. When you need a refresher, you have to completely exit the quiz to review the short paragraph from the lesson. Other than that, I highly recommend this app to anyone wanting to learn music theory in an organized fashion.
Aidan the Meme God,
For me, this has been the one that stuck!
I’ve been using the app consistently for two weeks, and my level of understanding for music theory is the highest it’s ever been by far. The lessons are great, but what’s especially good in my opinion is the practice feature. I’ve been spending just a bit of time each day to go back through exercises I’ve already done and try them again, and at this point certain aspects of music theory are starting to feel like second nature to me!

I’d like to give a big thank you to the developer, and encourage anyone trying to learn music theory to try this app!
beanie_cuves,
The key that finally opened the door
I struggled for YEARS with music theory, everyone kept raving about how simple it is, and I always felt confused and stubborn with anything regarding music theory. However I owe everything to this app for finally unlocking the door, it explained everything easily and effortlessly and now I’m able to learn even more theory after using this as my building block. If you still don’t understand or get frustrated do not give up! I even deleted this app from my phone for a year, came back and now I’m finally understanding of music theory. Thank you to the creators of this app!
Rybechka,
Simply fantastic
Although I’ve never left an app review before, I feel compelled to voice my support for this program. This is by far the cleanest, simplest explanation of basic music theory that I’ve ever encountered. The tutorials, exercises, and overall course design are all excellent. After years of playing various instruments, I finally feel equipped with the fundamentals of theory—something I’d always avoided because it seemed too difficult to learn on my own. I’ve enjoyed this app so much that I could go on and on praising it, but in short: it’s certainly the most worthwhile app purchase I’ve ever made. Thank you!
B-Rose94,
Very Helpful Tool, bought the $6 monthly membership, Love it!
I always played percussion instruments… struggled with music theory and understanding it. This App was so in depth and the exercises really help your retain and understand the lessons. I had some confusion when it came to learning the fast scales and how to apply the “order of sharps/flats” but I am already a difficult learner so I may have just been confused. But use google to help get clarity in lessons if needed, and it’s definitely worth the $6 a month as it gets more advanced and detailed.
Grockwildfire,
Absolutely Essential for Musicians
I’ve been playing guitar and bass for years now, always just playing what sounded good. I knew music theory was the next step but it confused the heck out of me and I didn’t want to pay a bunch of money for a class. This app made learning theory so easy and simple, my playing has never been better and I feel so much more confident in my music-making ability. Totally worth the money and with what I know about the app now, I would be willing to pay even more for it.
