Tintinnabulaion,
It’s a kana drill! It’s a rhythm game!
This game was, for me, the most effective way to learn to sightread hiragana and katakana. It drills a combination of kana, English text, and spoken audio across a gradually expanding library of characters... But you hardly notice, guiding the pixelated heroine across vibrant apocalyptic landscapes to a buzzy chiptune beat. It’s equal parts kana tutorial and genuinely challenging rhythm game, which means that some levels may require rhythm or memory skills that even a native speaker would find difficult. But the challenge keeps you working at the edge of recall, in a way that flashcards simply can’t match. Fortunately, you don’t need to complete all levels to advance — and if you are able to finish all levels, you will know hiragana and katakana cold.
SWillowood,
Great supplement for study
I have been studying Japanese for a little over a month now - this is my third attempt to learn the language and I am determined to succeed this time; therefore, I have started looking for better means of supplementing my book and instructor study time with games and other fun ways to engage with the language outside of study time proper. Hiragana Pixel Party has been a wonderful supplement to my study regiment.

Alone, this will not teach you the letters; however, it will most certainly embed the characters into your brain so that you don’t even have to think about them when reading Japanese. When I read English I don’t think about the characters that make up words, I merely pass over them and collectively understand the word they form. I was not able to do that previously with Japanese; however, after many hours of playing this on my Switch, I now have a similar fluency with Hiragana and almost with Katakana. It’s incredibly motivating.

Don’t rely on this to teach you, but you can rely on this to drill you. Putting it on my iPhone for when I can’t have my Switch near by ;)
wiltedrosesbloom,
Hiragana/Katakana review
I only started playing this game recently and the cute little tunes and memorization strategies used to help implement these Japanese characters to your mind are extremely helpful! I hope when i complete my hiragana lesson I will be able to depict a majority of the characters without fail. I would absolutely recommend this to people out there just starting out to learn the basics of Japanese writing systems. Ganbatte! (good luck)
Edit: I realized after passing certain levels there is a quick unexpected tempo increase and more characters thrown out to memorize. This app alone will not help with memorization with hiragana and katakana characters. Although, i do commend the game developers for issuing something free and usable to all, brush strokes and consistently should be added in this development for the benefit of mnemonics and other resources to help non-native speakers adjust to the differences of a foreign language. Thank you and so sorry for those relying on 100% good feedback. Talk soon.
SheogorathTESV,
One of the better “learn hiragana” games I’ve seen
I have only started learning Japanese at my college, and I have been using duo lingo and other apps to learn Japanese, but this app in particular has really helped me because it forces you to learn to recognize hiragana characters and sounds quickly, while being entertaining and rewarding. Not having to struggle to remember how to read hiragana in class has been a huge help. My only complaint is that sometimes (not very often) the beats of the music and the timing of the character sounds seem a little off from each other, which can be kind of distracting and make it hard to hit them at the right time, especially on levels where the boxes you have to jump over blend in with the dark background. (Admittedly though, I am not very good at music and timing so maybe they are meant to sound like that and it’s just a rhythm thing that I am just not picking up on)
4242564Soul Eater,
Wow a real 10/10
If you are a little suspicious about this game and possibly this review, just hold your mammaries and hear me out. This game is so fun and very wonderful and actually helps you learn instead of just putting it on your mind to only forget about later. It actually does stick to your memory. And if you know what undertale is, you will think that the little avatar looks a little like Frisk😂. I will recommend this game to a lot of my friends. It's very fun, the songs are catchy, it's creative and cute. If you have time to pick up an iPhone you have time to download this game and learn your hiragana. 😋👌🏽💯
birdielover13,
A real help
I’ve been learning hiragana and katakana for a little while now, and this really helps. A big problem for me is translating quickly. Most times I have to think about each character for a bit. This helps me think on the spot and translate faster. Plus it’s super fun! I was really expecting it to be more expensive to unlock everything, so $2 was a nice surprise! I’d definitely recommend another source to go with this though because there’s no stroke order or anything like that, but overall a great game and a great way to help learn Japanese characters! Thanks!
Obsidere,
Learning
My one and only issue is that sometimes, you don't get enough time between hearing and doing the rhythm to read the characters. As in: immediately after she says the rhythm, you have to repeat it, with almost no time to read the choices. Other than that, I do like this app and plan on getting the full version in the future.

Suggestion: Allow us to customize our own stages so we can choose the mission, kana, music, etc. and so we can learn at our own pace.
Heskery,
Brilliant way to teach and learn!
Really impressed with this! Enjoyable and very effective.

EDIT: I've had some time to play with this, and I feel there are a couple of issues with it. The biggest one is that it feels like the difficulty escalates much too quickly. I went from doing a mildly paced song with two characters to a fast song with five characters! I sometimes have a problem just remembering what order she says them in because they're so rapid.

The songs, though really great, have irregular beats, which I think throws off my timing a little. It might benefit from starting with steady rhythmic songs first.
Paisasiempre,
Great!! but with minor issues
Highly recommend. This app really helps you learn and it is fun. The songs and concept are the best. You don’t feel like you are learning but it really does stick.
Cons:
It goes from easy to hard extremely quick. I actually stopped playing for a while because I couldn’t move on to the next level.
The beats are sometimes offbeat from the music so the timing feels wrong and if you are trying for perfect scores this will be really frustrating.
If those two issues were fixed I would easily give 5 stars
Maertsoi,
Great game - so why the bad review?!
Let's start with the biggest pro: this game is fun and you will learn to listen.

The cons:

1. I'm giving this game 1 star because after level three it would not stop asking me to rate it after each game. Shame on you developers.

2. You only learn how to hear the sounds. As far as I've gotten, there is no practical writing which would greatly improve his app. (Add strokes to the rhythm guys!)

3. Like another review, the difficulty really ramps up quick sometimes.

4. The characters aren't always in the same spot, so not only do you have to remember the sounds, you need to find the character before you tap it.

5. No fine sound control. The ability to turn the music down with some fine control instead of off, min, and max would be awesome. As well as additional controls such as being able to DISABLE the distracting running into box sound!

So as you can see, a lot of cons but still a great game. The cons aren't a deal breaker, just a huge distraction to learning. Overall, I will recommend this to friends.
