Hockey WhiteBoard is an application which allows you to display player and puck positioning as you would on a portable dry-erase hockey coach's white board. It is a universal application that works on the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.
Simply drag the players and puck around with your fingertips as you explain to a player how to position themselves on the ice! You can utilize pinch/zoom/scroll/rotate gestures and controls to focus on any area of the ice you'd like (or leave it at a full-ice display). Teams can be represented by a wide variety of colors and you can have any number of players on each team on the ice at any time. The letter designation on each player can be left at the default "position" letters OR you can put a custom letter/number combination (as many as three characters on the iPad, two on other iOS devices) to represent a player's initials or their number. You also have the option of displaying a label (such as the player's name) underneath the circle. Player positions, labels and designations can be saved for future recall. You can also save team data separately for use with multiple white boards. Originally released for the iPhone in March of 2009, it is one of the original applications of its kind! It's been totally re-written to take advantage of the latest and greatest features in iOS and to implement some of the great suggestions/feature requests received from users over the years!

Need to draw lines on the white board? Activate one of the three drawing pens to draw different colored lines on the white board. By default the pens are red, green and blue but you have the option of changing the color of any given pen. To erase lines, simply use the erase control in the icon palette. iPhone and iPod touch users can also give the device a good shake to clear the lines.
Want to show where a player came from when moved? Turn on the "trailing lines" feature and a narrow line will be drawn along the path that each player is moved. This illustrates where the player "came from" before that player reached their current position.

VGA output on iPads is now supported! When connecting your iPad to an external monitor or projector, Hockey WhiteBoard will display the ice in landscape mode on the external display (and mirror all movements and lines). External display must be 1024x768 capable. iPad users will also notice that trailing lines and drawn lines are all now synchronized between portrait mode, landscape mode and the external display. Finally, the bug that cause custom designations on players to NOT be synchronized between orientations has been fixed. Additionally, when saving a file in landscape orientation, custom designations are properly saved.

Updated as a Universal Application for both iPhone and iPad! When run on an iPad, Hockey WhiteBoard presents a scaled representation of an ice rink with all controls to the right side for easy manipulation. Hockey WhiteBoard now allows you (on both iPhone an iPad) to choose the color of each team from a "Color Picker" (thanks to markj for the public domain code). Two digit numbers are supported as player designations on both platforms, and two letters are supported as designations on the iPad.

Good not Great
Was looking for an app that would help me explain things on the fly to my teammates as well as an app to document some system stuff.
There are some things I like about this app:
-The ability to customize my labels is a nice feature that most of these apps do not have.
-The ease of navigation to the different segments of the ice is well designed and easy to use.
Some negatives would be:
- Line creation is pretty basic. Fine for making an on the fly diagram but insufficient for documenting any systems.
- Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like the "erase feature" clears the entire drawing instead of allowing me to erase individual segments as needed. This seems too odd to be true; I'll dig a little deeper and see if I'm doing something wrong. However; if it is indeed lacking this feature it would be something I would hope can be added later.
Bottom line is that this is a decent app that is missing some features that would separate it from the pack but ultimately is sufficient for "on the fly" drawings.

Needs more features
To be useful for coaching it needs animation and a list of set plays that should be pre loaded. Also needs to include a practice or drills mode for training, complete with preset defense, passing and shooting drills with full animation. A logical addition when then be to add a puck sound as the play or drill commits. Would also like to be able to substitute postion letter with a number so I can show my team their specific role while in the locker room or on the bench. Add these features and you will see more downloads.

Best in class
Hockey WhiteBoard is the best app in its class. Each team can have a custom color and players can have custom identifications - such as initials or uniform number; don't underestimate the importance of that, especially with younger players ("OK kids, we're red and they're blue." "But, coach, we're black and they're white." ...).
Moving a player can provide a trailing line and you can draw directly on the board, independent of player movement.
On top of that, the app offers the option to change the number of skaters on the rink (extra attacker, penalty kill, etc.) and the view of the ring (full/half).
It is beautiful on the iPad and still very functional on the iPhone/iPod touch.
Finally, the creator was very responsive to email when I contacted him.

Needs features
iPad version doesn't have a way to put away the settings dialog. It is always present and you lose a third of your real-estate.
To make this useful, there needs to be animation recording. For practice time this eliminates the need to remember the drills and this can be used as practice planning tool as well. All ills can be selected before and grouped into "practice #1", etc..

There should be an update where you can toggle a trail on the players so you can show where they are going and puck passes ect. Other than that good app.

Last 2 versions have not worked
The last time this app worked was two versions ago. I used to use this regularly but now can not. As of now, all this does is try to boot. Fix the app and I will rate higher
