Description

Is That Silly is a fun way to teach children of various ages to pay attention to detail and expand their language skills. Designed with over 120 pictures created specifically to attract children’s attention, Is That Silly helps develop both receptive and expressive language as well as encouraging visual and auditory attention. The high-quality images in Is that Silly come in pairs, one silly and one “not silly” and are presented randomly. Each non-silly picture represents an every-day or true-life situation. The matching picture will vary by a silly change in wording.

How to play
With each turn, a narrator describes what is happening in the picture (e.g., “He is wearing his shoes on his hands.”). The student then selects the “silly” or “not silly” image. If the correct image is tapped, the child is congratulated. If the “silly” image is tapped correctly, the app automatically moves forward to the expressive feature and the child is asked what makes the picture silly. The adult working with the child then makes the judgment on if the child’s answer was “correct,” “almost correct,” or “not correct.” The correct/incorrect responses are marked by tapping on one of three flowers placed discretely in each scene. A “next” arrow is present on every page so the scene can be skipped if necessary. A tally of correct responses is tucked discretely in the corner of each scene.

Customization
Is that Silly is customizable from both the opening screen and inside each scene. The adult can choose if there are verbal/written prompts and verbal rewards. In addition, if the student is not ready for the expressive component, the prompt to explain why a picture is silly can be turned off. At the end of the session, a report card is generated indicating how the student has done. This report card can be emailed, or printed from the app. Although the default is for the percent correct score to show in each scene, this can be turned off by the adult.

Purpose
The purpose for Is That Silly is to encourage language growth. Children with ADHD, Autism, language disorders, and various learning disorders often struggle to attend to details1. Is That Silly allows the parent, SLP, or teacher to teach the expressive and pragmatic language skills many of these children are lacking. When the adult continues asking questions about the picture, the student is encouraged to expand language skills2. Because the app is fun and creative the students will be motivated to see what happens on the next picture.
Is That Silly has the following features

•High-quality images that will capture the attention of the student.
•Receptive language building by encouraging students to listen to the description.
•Expressive language building through answering “wh” questions and discussing the pictures.
•Visual/auditory discrimination forcing students to attend to both the visual and auditory cues.
•Data collection for each student.
•Compatible with Therapy Report Center for easy report writing and progress monitoring.
•Customizable to fit therapy needs

WinterSLP,
Silly app
This is a fun app for working on what is silly. The artwork is great and the kids love using this app. Since most of the scenes address "silly" behavior/situations, I would remove the ones that address safety e.g. Dog in the microwave. I think you guys should create an app similar to this to address safe vs unsafe but I think this app mainly addresses silly so that's what I would stick to.
Xmasbabi,
Fun app for preschoolers
This is such a fun app for preschoolers! My clients loves telling me if something is silly or not and why. We laugh so much during those sessions! The pictures are great, and I appreciate that the app takes data for me! This app is also a great way to introduce and target the precursors to the social skills concepts of acceptable versus unacceptable behaviors. Keep up the great work, Smarty Ears!
SLPMCA,
Is this a silly app
This is a great app for working on absurdities. The visuals and set up are nice and it is easy to use. I also like being able to access the settings while you play, but sometimes the gears (settings) are covering the sentences. The expressive portion is well done as well and I like the option to have right, wrong or cued responses. There are a few things I would like the developer to consider. 1. Have the choice to auto advance or not so we can talk about the picture if we want to. 2. Make the audio/written cue button two separate buttons. 3. The last thing I want to say is that I am not a fan of the "eating a dog" and "dog in the microwave" silly pictures because I think they are less about "silly" and more to do with safety/inappropriate situations. All of the other pictures seem appropriate for silly/not silly. I showed the pictures to a few other people and they also, didn't like those two pictures. I know I can uncheck those two in the settings which is nice, but I don't think they belong. I do think there is a need for an app that targets safe/unsafe actions or scenarios and would love to see you guys create one. Thanks for all of your hard work that you put into these apps!
Jerry Butanda,
Great App!
My kids love this app and they find it hilarious and are able to have some great discussion about the scenarios. I do not agree with the previous reviewer about the pictures being inappropriate. These kinds of scenarios can also be good discussion on problem solving and safety issues in a not so serious avenue.

Keep up the amazing work Smarty Ears. Can't wait for all the brand new tools you will provide for my therapy in the future!
Dragonfli621,
Love app, but needs a few pics changed
As an SLP working in school setting with students both in general and special education, I have used this app successfully with all students. The children love it and I love the ability to track data. It could be much improved if some of the pics were changed such as boy drinking poison and dog in microwave. These are inappropriate pics for children and should be removed. I , also, wish that you could slow down the audio prompt on new picture as it begins rather quickly. I have numerous Smarty Ears apps and love most of them. Some could be improved with minor tweaks of word choices and picture choices. Overall, your company has addressed a need for quality apps to use in therapy in a gigantic way! Please continue to update and improve and I will continue to be a loyal consumer.
Cloverdeb,
It's not silly, it's wonderful
I love this app because it talks at a slow rate, gives the kids a second opportunity if they are wrong, and keeps track of a score. Best of all it keeps the silly pics so you can talk about why they are silly!
SunshineSLP,
Nice idea, but the data is off
I like the app, except that the data function doesn't work right. If you skip a picture, it counts it as wrong answer, which makes the data invalid. I'd also like to see it prompt for the expressive explanation on a new picture (rather than right after they have done the receptive task) otherwise they can just repeat what they just heard on the receptive task.

Is That Silly
I use Is That Silly regularly with my younger students. They enjoy working with the app. It does an awesome job of presenting the information in both the expressive and receptive formats. Love the data collection piece. Wonderful app to work on pragmatic skills. Keep producing high quality apps for those of us in education to use.
Trisha C.-SLP,
SLP Fun!
I've been looking for an app like this! Will be perfect for my students with autism. Also, I plan on using it with my gen. Ed. Students for sentence structure, relaying new information, and articulation carryover! The pictures are clean and uncontested and the app is easy to use.
AZG331,
Some pictures inappropriate
I agree with a previous reviewer that some pictures (girl drinking poison, baby in oven) should be removed from this app. Especially given the type of population that this app targets.

I have many Smarty Ears apps. I generally love them. However, I do not like the audio recording. I would suggest another VoiceOver.
