Description

You love your music. In fact, you have the biggest collection of albums and individual songs of anyone you know and you listen to your playlists as often and for as long as you possibly can. Now, thanks to iSub Music Streamer, you’re enjoying your favorite songs everywhere you go, even at work or on a long plane ride.

iSub is an incredible app that lets you stream all of that music—even your concert recordings, DJ mixes, and audio books—from your home computer directly to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad over WiFi and mobile data.

iSub streams your music from any Subsonic compatible server (Subsonic, Airsonic, Madsonic, and others). There’s no central service to rely on and it's all your own music, so you never have to worry about songs randomly going missing when their licensing runs out like on some streaming services.

It doesn’t matter the size or file format of your collection; iSub can handle it all thanks to native support for popular lossless and lossy file formats like MP3, AAC, FLAC, ALAC, OGG, and OPUS. Save your limited mobile data when on the go thanks to Subsonic’s ability to transcode your songs to a lower bitrate as they play, and listen to your high-resolution lossless FLAC files when at home or on a WiFi connection.

iSub isn’t just about listening, either. You can easily search, browse, and edit your playlists right from you device, shuffle songs and albums, view your latest additions and far more! The current and next song caches automatically as you play, saving you money on your data plan. You can even cache whole albums over WiFi without having to play them, so you can be ready for that long plane ride.

Customize your music experience and make it just the way you want it. Don’t just get force fed music like some other apps. With iSub, you're in control of your music!

Check out the amazing features you get when you download iSub Music Streamer:

- Native support for MP3, AAC, FLAC, ALAC, OGG, and OPUS files!
- Gapless playback!
- Full parametric equalizer!
- Works over WiFi and cellular data

Long time no see! Hello again everyone, if you haven't been following the iSub Facebook page, the iSub 4 rewrite has been moving along nicely. However, some users reported battery drain issues with iSub 3 on iOS 10.3, so this update addresses that. There haven't been any bug fix releases in a while because the old project no longer built using the latest Xcode developer tools. Due to the severity of this battery issue, I spent a week getting the project whipped into shape and can now submit fixes again.

This update includes:
- Fixed crash when switching between Wifi/Cell connection
- Fixed tap and hold table cell to cache/queue songs
- Fixed network indicator never stops after song loads
- Fixed version label at the top of the settings page doesn't show version number

The previous update from Friday April 28th included:
- Fix for high CPU usage and fast battery drain on devices running iOS 10.3
- Fix for pull to refresh in small folders
- Fixed text gets cut off in EQ screen
- Re-enabled lyrics and cache status screens in the player
- Removed non-functional Twitter support

Quick note on the future of iSub:

As you all have likely noticed, there hasn’t been much development or communication over the past year. After taking a new full time job, I have no longer been able to continue developing iSub or providing direct support. And to be honest, I was completely burned out on the project after 4 years of non-stop work.

While I still can’t go back to full time development of iSub, going forward I’ll be making a better effort to release regular bug fix updates. Starting with this release, updates to iSub will no longer run on devices earlier than iOS 7, allowing me to refactor the project and remove tons of old legacy code.

This will make bug fixes much easier to do in a timely manner. Almost 97% of all app sessions are currently on iOS 7 and above, so this shouldn't affect most people. And you’ll always be able to download the last compatible release from the App Store, so it should continue to work on older devices.

So while I’ll no longer be making feature updates or providing direct support, what you can expect is for iSub to continue to work on your current and future devices for years to come. I want to make sure that iSub is usable for as many people as possible for the foreseeable future.

Quick update to finish preparation for iOS 5. This update moves the music cache to an area that is not backed up by iCloud so that it will not take up all of your storage space!

The big bug fix update that I've been working on is almost done and will be released soon. Also work is continuing on the big feature update. BIG things in store for iSub this year!
3.0.3

Fixes an issue where iSub will use 100% cpu power when put in the background that was introduced in the last update. If you've noticed your batter draining faster than usual when listening to iSub, this will clear that up!

A bigger bug fix update with more fixes is currently in testing and will be available soon, then work will continue on the massive iSub 3.1 update with many new features!

Thank you everyone for the great reviews! I'll be working hard on iSub over the next year to continue to bring improvements in literally every area of the app!

Coupland Grace,
The best is back
I’m pretty sure this is the most weirdly emotional I’ve ever felt about an app update.

I gave iSub 5 stars and a review back in 2012, and from that point til the Great Disappointment of 2020 it was an almost infrastructural part of my life. I deliberately held off on updating to iOS14 for so long that I eventually forgot that it was a strategic position I was holding, just to keep this app alive. The moment when, late at night in the throes of the pandemic and perhaps in my cups, I absentmindedly tapped “Update” then instantly realized the sonic ramifications of my actions, was one of shock and trauma and genuine human grief.

My months in the wilderness were hard, Reader. So hard. As the American Experiment seemingly crumbled around me, I tried every other Subsonic app in the App Store. None could compare. I began listening to the Bandcamp app almost exclusively, the rest of my collection fading into memory.

And so today, when I found this update, It was like Dorothy opening her eyes for the first time in the technicolor of Oz. Like, “Yes. This. THIS. This is the 2021 I was promised.”

I’ve been sitting around listening to tunes all evening, marveling that iSub is not only back, it’s better. Ben did it. He BUILT BACK BETTER. The design is clearer, the way it navigates my truly massive library is lightning quick, the new bells and whistles are all intuitive and cool. The best is back. Thank you, Ben. You really, really made my day.
Chase76,
Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes
I can’t believe this. I barely have the words but let me try and make clear, this is once again THE ABSOLUTE, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT, BEST STREAMER APP IN THE APP STORE for those of us who continue and will never stop rocking our own Subsonic, AirSonic, Navidrome collections. Wow! I had all but given up on finding even a basic app that hadn’t been seemingly abandoned and I have always loved iSub but as time marched on, it had difficulty keeping up but all of that apparently is to my great delight, in the past.

Why haven't you downloaded the app and fired up your server already? Seriously you should already be doing it. This is so amazingly exciting!!

I just want to give a sincere thank you to the developer who breathed new life into their app and into what I assume will be a very grateful and enthusiastic community in the days ahead. Thank you! Thank you!
Sean in LA CA,
Wow, thank you for the iOS v14 update
ISub stopped working after upgrading to iOS 14 on my iPhone, I was very disappointed and was about to write a command. Then, I see the app had an update 17 hours ago (after years of no updates). Problem solved!!!

One request: please don’t show the auto cached songs because it clutters up my real downloads, which makes my downloads hard to navigate. Or, have a separate tab for user downloads, as opposed to auto cached songs.

Great app, have been using it for years.
SkellySkelly,
Mostly great but confusing
I use this app with my Airsonic Advanced server and I really enjoy the music player and the robust controls. What I struggle with in this app though is figuring out how to cache songs in a coherent fashion. One may download the songs in a given playlist when browsing the server, but once those songs are downloaded, the playlist itself doesn’t seem to cache, so your order and organization is lost. I really wish this would be fixed because it would then effectively fix my complaints but the caching system in particular weds work. Also it’s difficult to ecologically specify to the app that you’re offline…when you fire it up without a server connection, many verbose pop ups appear which is dangerous while driving. This should also be fixed to make the experience better and safer.
John Vantine,
As good as it gets for obsessive music collectors
As a live music fanatic who listens to a lot of content that’s unavailable on major streaming services, I’ve tried many different configurations for music management/streaming from my home library. This is the best. It’s not the prettiest app out there, but the core functionality is so dialed in. When it comes to browsing your file structures and syncing them locally, iSub cannot be beat. To be clear, I’ve spent a lot of time with Plex and their newer PlexAMP offering... I strongly prefer the Subsonic/iSub combo.
Danny43455,
Pause between songs is annoying
I used iSub for a while and I like that it connects easily with my server and shows lyrics when available which is cool. But even with pre-loading of next song enabled, there is always a 1-2 second gap between songs, which I find really annoying. I reluctantly paid the $5 for the “play:Sub” app which does not have this problem and even lets you add cross fade.

iSub is a good app to try out streaming from your subsonic-compatible server. But for the long-run you think the gap might annoy you, play:Sub seems to be the best iOS app.
Jimjinooooi,
Back from the dead!
Thank your to the dev for updating this for iOS 14. I was so sad when it wouldn't work as expected after I updated to the new phone software but now am excited that it is working flawlessly. I was honored to be a part of the beta testing and use this app on a daily basis. The interface is clean and intuitive and I love the cache feature so the music can stay on your phone. Amazing app!
Arpinnurmela,
The most useful subsonic player
I’ve been using subsonic for over a decade. It’s basic format has essentially been unchanged the entire time and that’s a good thing. It’s so intuitive to use. I’ve tried other subsonic player apps and none have compared throughout the years. This player is so well thought out making it eminently useful.
tmydee,
Simple, Sturdy & Wonderful
Thank you, Ben, for this latest update. It’s so great to have iSub back, new and improved. While other similar apps may offer a lot of “wiz-waz,” iSub remains the best. Why? It’s so simple to use, and most importantly, it plays my files correctly and without hiccups or issues. Never a “handshake” problem with my server. Just seamless playback with all the important features. I couldn’t live without it.
Demuretwilight,
Fresh and new, old and sublime
I’ve been using this app for about 6 years, and new updates December 2020 have freshened it up once again. It’s always been the beat at what it does, easy use of subsonic (or other apps that use the subsonic protocols) on your iPhone. Now it functions in line with the latest iOS specs and still feels great to use. Thanks for the great updates!
