Description

Kiwix enables you to have the whole of Wikipedia (and many other web sites) available wherever you go! On a boat, in the middle of nowhere, or when data charges are too high, Kiwix gives you access to the whole human knowledge for free. You don't need Internet, everything is stored on your mobile device!

Download the Kiwix program from the iTunes App Store then download the ZIM data files which contain the content. You can download these files directly using the Kiwix App on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac - but this might take a long time, may incur expensive charges for the download, and is liable to errors because some files are rather large.

A faster and more reliable method is to use a computer to download the small torrent file for the large non-indexed ZIM file you want (not the pre-indexed package for Windows) from http://www.kiwix.org/wiki/Content_in_all_languages, then use a bit-torrent client (such a qTorrent) to download the actual ZIM data file to your computer. You can then transfer the ZIM file to your iOS device using iTunes File Sharing.

drednaught608,
Great App, But It Has One Major Issue
I’m loving that I have a portable encyclopedia and information resource whenever I cannot get internet, but I have noticed that whenever I play a video that I cannot fullscreen it. I also can’t move to a specific part in the video, I have to replay it all the way from the start to get back where I wanted. This is a terrific app, but this is the only major thing keeping me from fully enjoying it.
anonymouse293018,
The entire internet in the palm of your hand
Even though this takes up 50gb for me, it's much worth it. You can read about the history of poptarts, random grammatical rules, or really just anything on the internet, without the internet. I highly recommend Kiwix to anyone with a few dozen gigabytes to store, especially if they don't have a reliable internet connection. I'd also like to add that if it crashes a lot while searching, switch to "Matches" for your search engine, it takes longer but i find it to be more reliable, more accurate, and crash a lot less.
enderDanny, ROBLOX Fan,
Great app, although only 1 thing.
Personally, I think this is a great app, although because there are so many genres and articles on them, it doesnt cover all of them. I’m interested in one genre, but it isn’t contained in the app. And, personally, I would love a feature in which you could download specific articles, but sadly that doesnt exist.
FlyingSinger,
Super handy, clean and stable
I do quite a bit of international travel, and even with a decent data plan, access to the internet is often not cheap, convenient, or even possible. So I love having a big chunk of Wikipedia and Wiktionary stored offline for those times when I just NEED to know something and Google and online Wikipedia are not available. This does the trick with a clean design and stable performance on my 128 GB iPad.
KoolCroco,
REGULAR WIKIPEDIA WITH PICTURES IS NOT AVAILABLE
Kiwix is awesome, but I will only give 5 stars once you make it where I can download regular Wikipedia with pictures. I need the version with pictures please. I know that with pictures it’s like 80gb but I NEED IT. Is this a bug? I thought you could download entire Wikipedia with all the text and pictures in here. At least that’s what Wikipedia said you could do.

When I’m at the download place there are only two regular English Wikipedias which both say they lack pictures. I actually can’t tell a difference between the two besides the size. Does one only have lede sections or something?
OHgodNOTme,
Large file issues
So downloading small files are no issue but that app will download a large chunk of the larger files then just simply quit forcing you to try again. It’s been a 5 day endeavor trying to get the basic no picture no video Wikipedia downloaded. First attempt got to 90% before quitting. Second got to 67% then 31%

Downloading Over cellular is also not working. Or if it does it completely fails at less than 10% and refuses to progress.

Blown away
I always wished for phones to truly be this endless void of knowledge, and this app grants my wish. The ability to download all of Wikipedia for a fraction of a gigabyte is extremely powerful, espically knowing that I won’t have to wait for load times anymore. My only concern is the formatting is a little weird (Using an IPhone X), but overall I love the app.
BunduDave,
Makes the world a better place
This is one of those apps that everyone should be talking about. It does an excellent job of bringing Jimmy Wales' Wikipedia knowledge to people who don't have easy internet access. I aplaud the people behind it. Apple needs to have a special link for Apps like this that make the world a better place.
pizzaboyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy,
Life changer - GET THIS APP!!!!
I am an adult with limited internet access and a passion for learning. This has transformed my cell phone into my best friend. Thank you so much.

Categories are separated by source AND topic. You can download a general set or specific subsets (which saves a lot of space when you have limited storage). Speaking of limited storage, you can download sets of articles with or without pics or details, which further saves space.

ESL? They have simple English articles as well. 8 years old? They have the children’s set.

This app is so wonderful.
RandomDalmascan,
Idea is great but has a crippling bug
Bug that stops downloads at 100% is simply awful. I spend an entire day trying to download a file and it corrupts at the end. Tried a restart and anything else I could. Forums said the issue was resolved. It most definitely was not. Great concept though. I am using a 256GB iPhone X by the way, and I know I have plenty of space available.
