Monet Kay Love,
Love it!
Used this before they had an app and were still a website. Due to them not having a app, it wasn’t easily accessible and hard to save my place. They have so many great shows and even in Spanish they let you know which region the show is (ex: Mexico, Columbia. Honduras) so that you can see the differences. When I cancelled it, I received a email from one of the founders who told me they were sorry to see me go and offered me a student discount and told me they hoped to see me back and that they were planning on getting an app within a few weeks of that. I look forward to restarting where I left off because some shows on here are not only great, funny but it’s very helpful for learning languages.
EpicV27,
OK Content, Bad Customer Service
UPDATE: the developers of this app reached out, apologized, and issued a refund. I don’t think customers should have to write a bad review to get a dignified response, but I did want to provide an update and give them credit for ultimately resolving things fairly.

The shows they offer in German are fine but not particularly entertaining - the kind of off-brand stuff you would have rented at the library as a kid, or watched in German class in high school. Worth a 3- or 3.5-star rating. However, the customer service was 1-star. I cancelled after my first month but noticed two months later that they kept charging me. When I inquired, they said there appeared to another account under my name with a typo in my email address. Probably some kind of error on my end, I’ll take full ownership for that. But, given that it was clearly a mistake and the fact that I hadn’t used the service since cancelling, I would expect some kind of offer to refund all or a portion of the accidental charges. I asked kindly for that and was offered nothing. The customer service rep instead referred me to their T’s & C’s and claimed there was no way around it. Long story short: OK product, less than OK customer service from a company that clearly care more about holding onto $24 than they do about making a good impression on their customers.
Portfe,
Love the content; at the moment the app is useless
Right now (and repeatedly in the past) the app isn’t working at all. When it is, There are some major flaws with both translation and airplay.
1. When you send the content from your app to the TV, if it even works (right now it doesn’t for me), it doesn’t play at reduced speeds which is one of the most useful elements of the app. Also, while casting, when you click a vocabulary word to save it, it glitches. Many times the subtitles play on your phone while only the video is sent to your TV. I usually can only watch on my computer, although every once in a while airplay will function. 2. When you click on a word to save it for vocabulary practice, the wrong translation appears about 80% of the time. What’s the point then? 3. There’s some rad content, it’s just not as good for language learning as I would like and I want to watch it on my TV!!!! And I’m tired of all the problems occurring over and over again. I never know what I’m going to get. Am I going to be able to watch on the app on my phone? Is it one of the miraculous times it will kind of work on my TV via airplay? Sometimes it works but most of the time recently, it doesn’t. And if so, what’s the point of $90 a year?
Abbbrr,
Really great app but…
This is a really great app. My favorite part of this app is that I can see the subtitles in the language I’m watching and English, and then I can click on the word and it automatically gets added to flashcards that I can study later. I can see how this would be 5 stars for most languages. However, for Japanese it’s not. When learning to read Japanese, most people start off learning hiragana and katakana before moving on to learning the kanji. As a beginner, I can read hiragana and some katakana but no kanji. This is usually not an issue for me because most language learning tools will put the hiragana above the kanji in small font so you know how to pronounce the kanji. Not having this feature for Japanese defeats the entire purpose of this app. Including kanji should honestly only be reserved for the intermediate and advanced users. Unfortunately, I’ll have to cancel my subscription but maybe I can use this app once I get to that point.

I also took off a star because when I signed up through the app it only have two options $12/month or $67/year so I didn’t get the free 7 day subscription option that I saw on the website. Seems a little shady.
iRevvy,
Nope
I liked this application when I first discovered it for Spanish, and I used it for a while. There are a lot of technical issues (e.g., buffering, freezing, etc.), but it’s not terrible. The focal point, however, is. I didn’t realize it until I watched “La Bruja,” a Colombian series on there. The translations are incredibly horrible (and discriminatory). I’m convinced there’s no professional observation because why am I on S1:EP5-6 of “La Bruja,” and there are MULTIPLE prejudiced translations? In Spanish, the word for “black” (the color) is “negro.” If you know your U.S. History, you know English borrowed this word and started using it to describe a Black person. It was discriminatory, but this never occurred in Spanish. It was the opposite. Many Spanish-speaking countries use “negro” and “negra” as a term of endearment. It could mean “darling,” but it’s not translatable sometimes. The problem isn’t the Spanish translations but the English. Each translation for “negro” and “negra” was “black,” “blackie,” “nigg*r,” etc. Do those seem like appropriate translations in English? These are rarely terms of endearment IN ENGLISH. I’m sure some scenes may have intended to use “negro” and “negra” as an insult, but most of the scenes on the show were not giving that context. It’s disgusting, and I’m disappointed in this app.
TatajeMJ,
Outstanding! Phenomenal! Ausgezeichnet!
I am literally speechless. I mean this app is one-of-a-kind! You get the subtitles, AND you can press on the words you don’t know, AND they get automatically added to a list to review later? I mean this app is so versatile it is insane! Then it lets you review new vocabulary by playing the part of the video/movie where you added it so you can see it in context? Yes! I mean, insanely brilliant!!! It loops parts you want to hear over and over again. When logged in to website, you can see the lines of dialog just passed and the lines coming next. Brilliant! You can pause, switch languages, on and on and on and on! I am love with Lingopie! Exactly what I was looking for to learn not just one language but more! So easy! Insane! Did I just die and go to foreign language heaven?? Now you gotta do JAPANESE, please! Lingopie, I love you!
StevieD543,
Some translations incorrect or don’t make sense
I do love this app and think it’s worth the money, overall. The best features are being able to click the captions and automatically add flash cards. Also, you can advance or go back using the captions, so that makes following along really easy.

My only complaint is that some of the translations are wrong and seem to be produced by machine translation. One example-literal/word-for-word, doesn’t make sense at all. So, I’ll know it’s a set expression, I just can’t remember quite what it means. Another example- the word isn’t translated at all and just rendered as a transliteration. Machine translators do this when the word is colloquial and not commonly known. If they fixed that I’d give it five stars for sure, everything else is perfect.

That being said. The captions are still way better than what you find on other apps, and I do think it’s worth the price.
Amit Yadav,
Unprofessional Customer Service
Great concept to learn new language. I was trying this app out, as with all other apps there is a trial period after which you have the flexibility to cancel the subscription from your device. Lingo Pie strategically have put their subscription on the website, so you cannot maintain from your iOS settings or from the app. I was scratching my head to figure out where and how I would cancel my subscription while the time ran out and I was charged some $13. I was eventually able to figure out and cancel the subscription from their website. One of the founder reached out offering an alternative price/subscription to renew and instead I explained my situation and requested a refund, after which I never heard back. Granted, it was me who technically surpassed the free trial period by a day, but with request and explanation it should be clear why that happened. I will not recommend this app to anyone.
Ms. B. Bardot,
The Netflix of language learning
Just started the 7 day free trial and I’m pleasantly surprised how enjoyable it is to learn Spanish with Lingopie.
There’s many great features on the app to choose from. Such as the speed at which the actors are speaking, if your a beginner set it at a slow speed and increase the speed as your comprehension of the language improves, tapping on the words you don’t know and build your vocabulary that saved to review, and a nice variety of shows and movies to choose from.
Also they have excellent customer service that replied to my emails that day or the next morning.
I highly recommend this app which I have already done.
Emyshua,
LingoY?
I thought this app looked like so much fun and helpful because when you don’t know a foreign language it appears as if the speakers speak too fast!! (I’ve found this especially true with Spanish & had a native speaker practically confirm it.) This app doesn’t give you much selection there’re not many shows and not many 20-22 minute episodes. (Maybe it’s a cultural thing to prefer 11 minute episodes.) But some of these shows were clearly not made by a Spanish, Columbian, Argentinan etc company. These are shows created by a companies from the USA that have been dubbed, translated with Spanish speakers to reach a wider audience. Not authentic. I tested German as well but, since I’m still a beginner, I’m not going to comment on that. Although the selection and run time seem to be there no matter what language you chose.
