Description

Litterati is an app that is empowering individuals to make a significant, measurable impact on the environment.

Far more than just picking up litter, the worldwide community of Litterati users are building the most powerful crowd-sourced set of data on litter ever assembled.

This data is being used to:

* Help cities better utilize their waste management services
* Convince companies to change their operations to be more sustainable
* Arm individuals and organizations with proof to create government policy changes

Litterati also shows you the map of your personal positive impact on the environment

You can join global cleanup challenges as well as create challenges in your community where your friends, family, neighbors, school system, or co-workers can join together to make your area healthy, clean, & beautiful.

This planet that we call home is a big place to keep clean. We all need to play our part.

Here is how the Litterati app works....

When you see a piece of litter on the ground:

(1) Take a photo of it through the camera in the Litterati App

(2) Litterati will automatically geo-tag the photo for you so that the litter is accurately captured

(3) Our LitterAI tool will automatically assess what the litter is by adding "tags" to each image. This is to accurately categorize each piece of litter.

You can also upload the photos to the Litterati database directly from your phone's photo gallery as well if you'd prefer.

Once you've taken your first picture, you can begin to track your personal impact as well as the total impact of the Litterati community

Join the global Litterati community today to be a part of over 150,000 people in over 117 countries around the world in the combined effort to clean up our planet!

There are a number of UI simplifications and performance improvements throughout the application. It's been a while!

Starting today, we will be rolling out some simplifications and performance improvements within the application over the next few months.

We are so thankful for our active community and tireless work by so many to help document litter around the globe. We also want to help more people join the cause by giving a sense of progress towards regularly capturing litter. We've added a new section on the main Impact tab where we will help users visualize their activity during the last week along with giving new users a goal to shoot for to get started with documenting litter. For our active community we don't expect our goals to be very challenging, however for new users we think this will help people achieve a smaller target as they work towards the high levels of engagement in the community.

As always we love your feedback and are so thankful to you all in helping us achieve our goal of a litter free world.

- Made "Log Out" easier to find. You can now find it under the main profile screen.
- Partner Challenges can include a Website link if Partner includes it in the dashboard.
- Correction to the tagging taxonomy where previously two words (like "bottle cap") would be accepted as a single tag. With this release, each word is a tag (typing "bottle cap" would tag as "bottle" and "cap").
- Various bug fixes, including fixes for user settings were not always saved and occasional duplicate images uploaded.

We are continuing our effort to make our application easier to use and accessible to a wider audience. As a reminder, we have articles on our help.litterati.org site under "Litterati Updates" which describe these changes in detail.

This update is all about onboarding. New users have been stopped in their goals of making change happen in their community because the initial experience in the application hasn't set them up for success. We've heard the concerns and frustrations and we've built a new experience for initial users in time for World Cleanup Day which will make the experience much shorter and allow users to get started quicker.

For the first time, we have also given our community instructions on how best to take pictures within our applications so that we can do a better job recognizing and automatically categorizing the litter you work so hard to document. These instructions will be shown to existing users the first time they open up the camera and will also give new users a better idea how to get started in the application.

As always, let us know if you need our help through our support team. We're so thankful for all the work you do daily to create world changing data.

We are pleased to release the first of a few changes to our application which will improve ease of use and make our applications accessible to a wider audience. We have created articles on our help.litterati.org site under "Litterati Updates" to further describe these changes going forward.
This update is all about navigation. We've heard from many of you that where things are in our application isn't the same as other popular applications. This update is the first step in remedying that situation by bringing the navigation and layout of the app more in line with other mobile applications. We've also promoted the Gallery feature to prime real estate in our application under the "Activity" tab. We hope this will save you many swipes and taps as you tag your data.
We also have opened up a new path for you to help us achieve the goal of a zero waste world by offering community members a path to become certified Litterati researchers and help our partners execute scientific litter studies. Take a look at the "Tasks" tab if you're interested. We hope that this will give you even more opportunities to change the world through data.
As always, let us know if you need our help through our support team. We're so thankful for all the work you do daily to create world changing data.

micksirelli,
Fantastic
This app is fantastic! One aspect it seems to be missing is viewing the photos other people took in their area, or at least the updated geotag map in the app itself instead of only online. I feel like this could be used to build a better community. Maybe even have a “badge” system to spark motivation could be incorporated. People love positive reinforcement. Anyways I’m sure you get plenty of suggestions but I figured I’d give a few more. Keep up the great work!!
abf.finn,
Best app ever!
I love Litterati! Before downloading the app, I had never even thought of going out and picking up trash, or even picking up trash that I walked by! The map feature to tell where you picked up the trash, as well as the leaderboard make this app amazing! I do have a few suggestions, though. First of all, on the leaderboard where it shows how much trash the top countries have picked up, I think you should be able to click on the country and see where the trash was picked up. You can do this with the people on the leaderboard, but sadly not the countries. Also, I’m pretty sure when you go to the global litter map online, it doesn’t show where all of the trash is being picked up like before. I think this is a glitch, but you might want to get it checked out.
Dimaha1954,
Don’t be a Litterbug! No worries-There’s an awesome app for that.
Back in the 1950’s and 1960’s, a campaign was created in response to a huge litter problem. People threw their garbage out car windows with little thought to where that litter would end up. In the public’s defense, back in the 50’s and 60’s, they were not aware of the huge devastating effects litter would have on the environment. It is 2020, and we have have known for years, just how litter has poisoned our world. It is up to us to be the stewards of the world that we leave to future generations. Let us keep Our World clean and healthy. A clean and litter free world is a beautiful world. Let’s do it! It’s not that hard! In fact, there’s an App for that. It’s called Litterati!
dumbocooperlover,
I love this
Me and my friend starting doing this not that long ago and on are first day we picked up 250 pieces of trash it felt amazing. The next few days we took groups of little kids out with us and taught them a lot of lessons about making are environment healthier. These kids started picking up there own trash and got so excited over it. I cannot tell you how happy this made me I was in shock of how I was helping others and are environment. So overtime we had groups of different people we taught about picking up trash that did it on there own. I could not be more proud of myself for it. This app really changes people’s thought on helping are environment and just overall spreading awareness and I love it.
amsaglow,
Gamification of taking care of the Earth!
This app is an amazing way to make an impact on your daily walk! Filled with challenges and scoring, Litterati allows you to turn being kind to Mother Earth into a game. This means that it’s great for people of all ages — and would be especially great for teaching school-aged children the impact of their litter cleanup. With it’s easy to use interface, location tracking, and amazing AI, the data that Litterati collects is invaluable to the companies that are affecting and the cities that are affected the most. This app is truly influencing positive change, and you can be part of that by downloading!
DisappointedBG,
Literally Addictive
I definitely picked up 1,000’s of more litter because of this app. It automatically creates a fascinating map, by gps locating litter that you photograph, as you collect it. You can tag the litter with the source, such as McDonalds, and type, such as #plastic cup. It’s surprising how pieces add up quickly, and by viewing the leader board, you can compete to pick up the most in the last 24 hours, worldwide! Very cool.

My only critique is that the app does make your data public, so be sure not to use your real name or profile picture.
Fagstaffian,
Great app, need ability to ‘trash talk’ in challenges
Love the app, and it does motivate me to pick up trash. I’ve experienced some issues with not being able to take photos without freezing up after I’ve uploaded 20-30 photos in a row. The one major improvement I would suggest is that there should be a way to trash talk with other users that are in your challenges. Would be fun and could be a cool feature of the app.
E Noreen,
Love this app but needs some operational work
Love using this app!!! Incentivizes me to pick up more trash and even share what I’m doing with my friends. Cool features too like tagging the type of litter. Only issue though is every couple weeks or so, it’ll crash or stop working properly and it can be a bummer. Looks like they’re trying to fix those issues. Hope they do!!! Highly recommend this!!!
Zinido,
Ideas
This is the first app I’ve ever reviewed. And I’m only doing because I love the app. It has so really good intentions and I also have some ideas. I think you could and a feature where you could take a picture of a big group of litter (like on a beach) and name it as 15 or 20 pieces of litter so you don’t have to take separate pictures. As a closing sentence I just can’t praises this app enough, it is just amazing.
deliciousvinyl,
Really inspiring!
I have been using this app for a few years now. At first I thought it was an inspired way for a lot of people to clean up our world. The more I use it, I love seeing my personal impact and browsing to see what other people are doing and where. Cool to feel like you are part of something bigger than yourself.
