Lost in Tactics,
I Paid. good - but lacking QoL
I paid for the creator version… Excellent and simply amazing, worth every penny!

Sadly… Mental Canvas BADLY needs quality of life updates - like yesterday. Their silence and lack of updates.. makes me hope this company is ok and not going through hard financial times.

————————
QUALITY OF LIFE FEATURES (Keep us IN the flow)

I am understanding Mental Canvas is not competing with:
- Procreate
- Photoshop
- Affinity Photo
- or any of other deep artistic apps

I totally get it,

Mental Canvas has it’s own lane and tries to keep us within the territory of their tools for 3D planes and not wanting to boggle us with too many features. It’s a beautiful and unique lane.

But…

MENTAL CANVAS .. bhaaddlyy, needs the following quality of life features:

• Blur
• Liquify
• Mesh Warp
• Some Blend Modes
• Auto straight Lines and Auto Shape

By Mental Canvas lacking these basics I listed above…

Mental Canvas FORCES us to leave the app EVERY TIME we want to blur, or liquify, or do any of these **primitive** special effects listed above.

and so.. here is a typical Mental Canvas process:

1. leave MC app
2. open another app
3. Adjust make changes in other app
4. Export to photo gallery or icloud
5. come back to MC app
6. Import updates

Really Mental Canvas?

This is when Mental Canvas starts jumping into the **annoying zone** and totally ruining flows. I really hope you guys figure this out.
Jasand P,
Hands down the most innovative app I've downloaded in years
I tend to get excited about new apps that might make me more productive or help with art and creativity. Nine times out of ten, I have found these apps to repeat what other apps do – they're just shinier, with a better UI and not much else. They don't do anything different. So they collect dust and eventually end up getting uninstalled.

I came across a user demoing Mental Canvas via TikTok and instantly knew I had to download the app to my iPad and try it myself. Within fifteen minutes of installation, I had my first drawing consisting of multiple canvases in 3D. Mental canvas makes 2D art have depth in ways I've never seen before. The best part is, I didn't have to learn 3D modeling to do this. Mental Canvas also provided on-screen video tutorials and provided example scenes to learn and get up and running quickly.

It's been a day, and I'm already addicted to making new art in Mental Canvas. I doubt I'll ever let this collect dust. I could see myself using this as a replacement or addition to work done in Procreate. My mind has been exploding with new ideas of what I could do in the future, and I can't wait to get started on my next piece.
Elykahn,
Incredibly Powerful & Expansive
To say this app allows you to “go outside the box” doesn’t even begin to express how powerfully it expands your abilities. Unlike any other tool I’ve ever seen or used Mental Canvas makes infinite canvases for drawing(acknowledging that you’re drawing on a 2D screen) which can each be positioned at any angle, distance, relation to the other layers/canvases and then travel through your creation by saving particular perspectives/positions and zooming from one to the next as though you were hovering in 3D space. The drawing tools are relatively basic/simple, probably for the best 90% of the time but I would like to see SVG imports and basic vector type integration. Otherwise the limits are imaginary.

Well, and cost. I’m generally happy to pay for well-made apps rather than be advertised to or having my data sold to fund the development, but I’ve had a difficult time justifying the ROI for this one. I want it to keep up to date and progress, I love to use it from time to time but I haven’t quite cracked how to make it worth the paid investment.
Rashaad Bell,
Awesome tech
If you’re able to figure out how to use it, you can create some amazing things. There is a learning curb, and the screen always readjust from where you want to place something, when you go to frame mode, which might throw people off. I also don’t understand why they limit how many interactive videos you publish, regardless of the tier you subscribe to. It’s like, dude, stop gatekerping features from a product I paid for. One time purchase gets one interactive video and the highest monthly sub only gives you five. Stop being greedy. If more randoms could physically interact with the video, then you would get more subscribers. As is, nobody wants to “waste” their 1-5 interactive videos, so nobody is doing them. I mean, I’m sure they are, I’ve just never seen one. Overall, keep this in mind. If it doesn’t bother you, then go create some dope stuff, cause trust me, you will. I gave it five stars, but I wanted to give it 4 1/2, due to gatekeeping features you paid for.
zhi 0 er,
Like it, but needs some improvement
Overall I like the idea and the way it did not over complicated things.
But here’s something that I believe it can improve.
First, it would be nice to have ruler and/or shape tool (like round and rectangle drawing tool)or even some adjustable vector lines will be nice
Second, it would be awesome if able to import existing picture and photo to the scene since the drawing panel is kind of really simple.
Third, in the angle setting area, if the app had preset angle(like 30,60,90 degrees )will helps a lot ,the distance thing is the same. I like that it has free mode and it’s necessary, but I also hope there’s some preset buttons allow me to quickly get there to see the estimate feeling.
One more thing is I like the selection tool can pickup all the lines and colors, but can we also have the function to select as picture layers. It would be a lot easier to choose one entire layer I like to choose the distance and angle. Of course, if we be able to curve the layer will be more amazing but maybe also hard to achieve.
Final suggestion is please find a way to improve the select things to separate the things I need from the others and then set it into a different layers. I mean the video definite helps, but I still feel a bit confuse how to make it into a different layers to allow me to make different angle.
But overall, I like the idea.
Cacomyxl,
Almost useful
I hope to see an upgraded version that allows you to create 3D objects to put into your 3D landscape, and offers greater more editing capability. Mental Canvas has a lot of constraints that tend to limit the type of pieces you can create with it. While there are plenty of fun, creative things to do within this stylized 2D/3D hybrid, it doesn’t meet my needs and I don’t think it would be that much harder to make it versatile enough to be much more generally useful. Unless I am missing something, it doesn’t seem to be possible to edit anything once you have projected it off of the plane. Also there is only very limited capability to rotate objects off the plane using the hinge tool. Once they are rotated or projected objects positions can’t be adjusted. If there is a cut/copy/paste method, it is not intuitive. Taken together, these limitation make for a frustrating experience.
renistrem,
Beautiful app
I love it…makes my designes and or cartoons alive…

One big , even a huge con….you can only use the app for 1 week off line, so if you live somewhere rural like in the Pacific Northwest , with no internet connection, you have to drive once a week into town or a city to activate it again. So in fact you pay for an app, but the company still controls if you can work with it, i think this should be told and explained in the FAQ, before you buy it….
I wonder what the developers would say if they buy a new car, and afterwards they find out they only can drive it for 7 days and then they have to go back to the dealer to activate it again…I bet they would ask for a refund….
But otherwise its a cool app
stomywave,
Mental Canvas is great! But confusing at first here’s tips!
I love the app but some features confused me at first I was able to find answers to my problems and that made it really fun for me I’d like to share some info on the the things I didn’t understand to help others.

The eraser: I was really annoyed that the eraser didn’t just apply to the layer I was on. Come to find the eraser just erasers everything on the canvas your on so if your running into this try and make a new canvas. In the situation where you need it to be on the same canvas turn off the eye on the other layers and that will prevent it from erasing.

How to delete a layer/canvas: I had know idea at first but I watched a video and saw them do it in the video. You hold down on the layer or canvas you want to delete and the option should appear.

It’s a little frustrating to see the reviews being dunked by people who don’t have an Apple Pencil, cause plenty of apps require one. and it has nothing to do with how well the app works for users who have one. I think you should make it more clear in the description to stop the complaints.

Overall can’t wait to see how the app evolves
great_game101,
Why
If this app was good, which it’s not, it’s still weird to use and gives you a head ache. It’s trash disguised in software. You could almost find this useful, but I don’t. If you want to draw in 3D space, buy a head set and an app for VR. Don’t spend money on this app, don’t even get the free version of this app. It’s an eye sore, and when you finally get the hang of it, it’s still annoying to use. They have very limited brushes and you may think that is helpful or not too bad because you can still zoom in, but really it just takes more time to do a simple task. Maybe I’m just stupid and this app has good qualities. Don’t base wether you buy this app on me, just take into consideration that I would rather spend over 200$ on a professional app than get this in the free mode.

If I one day find this is good, I’ll delete this. But for now, I still don’t like it.
KiwiLillia,
Suggestions for update
This is perfect for environment design, storyboarding, and illustration, especially if you find layout to be a challenge! I am definitely using this to design my shots from now on. Some things that could be added to improve the experience that would just bring it to the next level are: a line tool/ shape tool, preset objects like a cube made from four planes that could be used as a jumping off point, and the possibility to export files as a .obj file (I’m not sure if that is possible but this would be great for cg pre vis.) either way this is a great tool for animation students and I’m so glad I found it!
