Description

Midnight Planets lets you explore Mars as seen by the Mars Rovers Curiosity, Spirit and Opportunity. It lets you view almost every image returned by the rovers in panoramic context, and provides a number of options for viewing in 3D. The app is an ongoing project in visualizing other worlds, using image data from spacecraft exploring our solar system.

Version history

1.4
2014-10-03
This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

• Updated to support full resolution on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
• Updated for iOS 8
• Minor enhancements
1.3.1
2014-06-07
- Improved view options menu
- Updated app icon
1.3
2014-03-27
This update is required to support a new filename format for Curiosity Mastcam, MAHLI and MARDI images. Previous versions of the app cannot display images with the new filename format in the panoramic view, so you will need this update in order to see them. Also, the data set for previous versions of the app will stop being updated at some point.

Other changes in this version:

- Some additional support for written content.

- iAd now only appears when viewing the home page in the web view.

- Adjusted brightness of calibrated MER Pancam images to better match background Navcam images.

- Bug fixes and minor improvements.

1.2.3
2013-11-13
- Fixed an issue with metadata loading.
- Changed the app icon label on the home screen from "Midnight" to "M Planets".
- Another update will follow, with another fix for metadata loading.
1.2.2
2013-11-06
- Simplified app icon more in keeping with iOS 7.
- Put the Vision and Site options on the main level of the View Options menu to make it faster and easier to use.
- Removed full screen ads. Banner ads now appear for 35 seconds, then go away for a while.
- Reordered the toolbar icons on the iPad slightly.
- Bug fixes.
1.2.1
2013-10-17
- Re-ordered toolbar icons
- Bug fixes
1.2
2013-10-04
- Support for iOS 7
- User interface improvements
- Bug fixes
1.1
2013-06-21
- Support for MER-A Spirit.
- Support for calibrated, archival-quality images for Spirit and Opportunity (MER). These images are processed to optimize download time and storage requirements and hosted by Midnight Planets. They appear automatically in the app for archived sols that Midnight Planets has processed. For Opportunity, archived images are released after a few months' delay; for recent sols "raw" images are displayed. (Some archival data for Curiosity is available, but processing it is going to require additional effort.)
- Disabled auto-zoom on image selection. Image selection now works in a more standard, predictable way. Double-tap images to quickly zoom and center them.
- Added a scene brightness setting in view options.
- Important bug fixes and performance improvements.
- Updated app icon.
- For advanced users: there is now a 'missing images' option in the manual view settings for MER, which displays images which are not available but for which metadata exists. This option is not available for MSL, as the public does not have access to MSL metadata as such.
- The "Close Ad" button is now enabled after five seconds.

elakdawalla,
An indispensable interface to a vast quantity of rover data
There is so much data being sent to the Web from the rover missions that it's hard to get a handle on it all. Midnight Planets provides a variety of ways to track the rovers through the images they send us. My two favorite features: the rapid VR assembly of NavCam images and the ability to display stereo pairs as either red-blue anaglyphs or stereograms. The VR display is so cool, as it displays the rover's path; tapping on sol numbers lets you drive forward with the rover across the Martian terrain. The developer has been working on display of rover data since the MERs landed, and it shows.
Leeroyhat,
About time an app like this arrives.
As a student of astronomy and physics, also working with jpl I never could find a website that would allow me to skim through all the photos curiosity had taken. It's almost as if nasa cherry picked the photo's they wanted me to see, rather than share the experience of actually being there. This app finally takes me there. Kind of sad, but as new horizons heads for Pluto, I wish the photos would update like this app. Because I just know they are going to horde every photo until the make a press release of their finest images getting there.
Cheeky Monkees,
Hands down, the best way to view Mars surface features. Period.
If you enjoy closely studying surface images of Mars this is by far the best tool I’ve used. It lists the images by both location and sol but also will lay the photos out in a mosaic for each site with 360* of pan. This makes it possible to follow terrain and rock structures instantly into the site’s adjacent images. In addition its easy to follow the rovers path through each successive location on screen. Moving forward or back is done by clicking on screen markers in the image. Easy peasy.

This is my go to app for a walk on Mars.

The best way to view Mars rover images
This app is absolutely the best way to view the photos being taken by the Mars rovers. It does a great job of placing the images into 3D virtual reality where one can move forward and backward daily in time to see what Curiosity Opportunity have seen while controlling which of the numerous cameras are being used.
DanaosX,
Indescribably Supercool
As one who grew up with Asimov and Clarke and Heinlein, with Sputnik and Explorer 1 and tracking Echo 1 & 2 by eye in my granddad's back yard and Tiros and Mariner and all the other probes and lunar landings and Skylab and Mir and the shuttle and ISS and Hubble and our other big eyes on the sky and now these landers and eyes on Mars....To be able see Mars, SEE it, like this, is just the best. You kids just can't imagine. Onward! Upward! Ad Astra Per Ardua!

Excellent
Good to be able to have an interface like this to view Mars in 3D. The only thing this app is missing is Google cardboard support. If it had that it would really create the most immersive experience possible.
SeskaLien,
Invaluable Resource!
This is better than anything we even have access to on the Curiosity team for going through images along the traverse. Highly recommended!!!
Sharticle💨😷,
Midnight planets beauty
Midnight planets is extremely beautiful and informative. Can do some close up visual geological surveys of the loads of hi-res images stitched together mosaic style from location to location.
Markisdaman,
Simply amazing!!!!!
You've given me something I've always dreamt of. To be able to walk on another planet. Thank you so very much for your hard work
Skeeter-SJ9,
End of the line
As of October 2019, this App is no longer adding new Curiosity images. This was my go-to Mars App for more than a decade. It will be sorely missed. You had a great run. Thanks!
