A kick in the pants…
While no one wants to be kicked in the pants, it is sometimes needed to get moving. This past fall, after harvesting a beautiful bull elk in Colorado, I realized that my fitness was not at the level required to sustain our three trips to haul out my elk to the truck. This was the first kick in the pants. This brought to my attention that my current at-home fitness plan, that included taking walks with a heavy pack, was not sufficient to truly be in mountain shape. I decided to try MTNTOUGH based on a Live Wild Podcast recommendation and here are my thoughts. Enter the second kick in the pants… “Feel the burn!” She said. “Take your mind off the pain” he said. I definitely work out harder and rest less with Sarah and Jimmy and Dustin in my ear than I do under my own motivation. I work out in the early AM before the family is awake, so being able to use my phone and earbuds is key to keeping a low sound profile as I try to silently grunt and sweat my way into Mountain Shape. I love the style of workout, I love the simplicity of the App, I love the different levels and personalization that are offered… can’t say enough good things. I’ve already convinced three friends to get their own accounts and start getting in even better shape than they already are. Well done on the execution of this business and product and App… it is very very good. I’ve been working out 5 days a week for 9 weeks and starting to really feel and maybe even see the results.

Motivating
I’ve been using this app for two weeks and it’s built up my motivation to continuously push myself to a greater athletic ability. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the KB20 program where I get to train alongside and compete with the MTNTOUGH elite athletes. The EAT MTNTOUGH videos offers guidance on how to develop a foundational understanding of my nutritional needs. Dietary goals alone are necessary to helping one achieve their fitness goals and this app doesn’t over complicate it. I’ve been exercising for 3 years and through that time I’ve used the Centr app and Eric Leijas app, which are all great fitness apps. What separates the MTNTOUGH app from the others is the interactive experience. Again, being able to exercise alongside/compete with the other athletes is a huge motivating factor. I’m also pleased to find an app that offers heavy bag exercising programs. There’s a primal value to getting yourself out of the gym and onto the hiking trail, and you don’t need to spend $1000’s in order to do so. You just need a backpack and hardware store. Lastly, I’m 36 years old and I’m trying to build myself up so that I can be in the best shape of my life well into my 60’s ,70’s and 80’s, which for me is achieved through having a active lifestyle that continues outside of the gym. So for me the exercises offered through this app are ones you can continue to do throughout your life.
Cliff McLeod,
Great programing, great app.
I have been in the USMC for 14 years and this app is helping me get back to peak form. 37 years old and out working the Marines in their 20s! I am currently on week 5 of the postseason strength program and love everything about it. I am not new to strength training or HITT workouts but have been challenged with every workout from MT and I am getting stronger. Before MT I was not not following a program and was not getting the results I wanted. After 5 weeks I am about 1/3 the way to my goal of losing 10-15 lbs (cutting) while maintaining/increasing my strength. I watched the nutrition program and started tracking my Marcos every few days. This has really helped my dial in my training and nutrition to see the best results. Can’t wait to start the heavy pack and pre-deployment training.

The app is great, very user friendly, lots of programing no matter your fitness goals or availability to equipment. Tons of excellent bonus material from daily motivation to mobility. Great program and app, you won’t regret it. Stay Dangerous!

Military perspective
Highly recommend the Military focused workout plans, especially if your trying to go to any selections or physically demanding ground-side schools.
Currently 8 weeks into the Pre-Deployment program and so far I am really impressed by the workout programs they have created. I appreciate the consideration the instructors have put into the program in regards to injury prevention and overall fitness health due to being active military. An injury from working out could effect my career negatively.
There 2 downsides to the app and program but nothing too bad. Only reason I’m giving 4 stars and not 5. First issue I am currently overseas and don’t have access to good/fast internet connections. Making it hard to watch the videos, especially the workouts that your supposed to follow along with. The ability to Pre-download the video would solve this issue. Second issue is the warm ups are good at targeting the specific muscles but seem a little short. This could be more of a personal problem from 11 years in the military, which has made my body feel 45 years old instead of 30. I fixed this just by doing stretches and warm ups for a little longer and working with our sports medicine physicians.
Overall, I really like this company and would recommend to anyone militsry/backcountry hunter.
Chaza402,
It’s no joke!
I just turned 40, just had my first child, and my wife and I are the only family we have within 1000 miles. Needless to say the first thing that went were my daily trail runs, heavy pack trainings, and general health with no sleep. I decided I needed a program that could help pull me out of the worst shape I’ve been in since my partying days in college. I’ve been using the app and I am blown away by the convenience and quality of the programs. I live a ways from town and really don’t want to work out in a gym setting, the minimal gear programs are really tough even though they just require a set of dumbbells, a cooler, and a mat. I’ve completed the “On Ramp” and am on The 4th week of the “Foundation” and I’m feeling great- seriously worked, but great no less. It’s very motivating and easy to stay on top of since it requires about 30-45 mins roughly 5 days a week. I will be using this app till I’m too old to walk in hills!
Annoyed Pizza Eater,
Three weeks in
So far it seems like a great fitness app. My favorite part is that the workouts are very structured and force me to incorporate all the stuff I’ve neglected for years - flexibility training, core, legs, cardio, etc. The trainers do actually respond to questions and comments, and they give a lot of helpful instruction on form during the workouts. For example, I was never able to do lunges on a regular basis without developing knee pain. Following this app’s guidance, I’ve been doing them almost daily for weeks without issue.

My only gripes are pretty minor. One, I’d like the programs to touch on common pain points or injury risks associated with specific exercises. Not just “do it this way for maximum effect,” but also “do NOT do it this way or you’ll injure your rotator cuff,” and also “if you’re feeling pain, do this instead. I suspect there are lots of people out there like me with injures from years of misuse, failing to warm up/stretch, etc. If a specific exercise is causing you pain, it leaves you in a bind when it’s a key part of the day’s program.

Also, the app could be a little more intuitive about directing me toward the program I’m currently working on. Right now, I’m manually searching the program each time in the app and then selecting the specific episode. A long series like Foundation should be right at the top of your home page with a Continue option. Very minor issue.

All in all, pretty impressed and plan to stay on it for a while.

A Must Have For Your Arsenal
I am a veteran, a hunter, and an aspiring mountaineer.

I have been using this app for just under two months. I used to be about a biscuit-shy of 200lbs when I started out. So far, I have lost about 5lbs and gained a much needed strength and stability.

What separates this app from anything else I have ever used is training along with some of the MTNTOUGH athletes - it’s very interactive and engaging. The coaches also have extensive experience, and it shows. The app offers kettlebell workouts and a heavy pack program if you prefer to use minimal gear. They also offer videos on nutrition and recovery and don’t over complicate things. The cardio/high intensity workouts are no joke as well.

I have recently switched to their hunter series to continue building more strength. I’m happy to see there’s a good balance of alternating strength and cardio/recovery days.

I am currently 41 years old. I see myself using this app well into my 50s and 60s. After that, I’m pretty sure I’ll be switching to tai chi app or something. For now, I’m enjoying this app, and I highly recommend.

One insignificant suggestion: I would ask for more videos on recovery. Maybe try showing banded stretches, foam rolling, even meditation or breath-work. From someone that has ever gone on a long trek, an intense work out, or a deployment knows the value of recovery. I’m sure our military and first responders would appreciate that as well.
Macktastik,
Best workout app
I stumbled on this app on accident and decided to download it. Once I did, I have never looked back. This app offers a variety workouts that are challenging and get you where you want to go in your fitness journey. I like the KB20 because it is challenging and I like the instructional videos that program comes with. I also enjoy the pre-deployment program because it is really challenging and gets me where I need to be physically to pass the ACFT. It incorporates a lot of movements that are not too complicated and if they are a demo video is provided. Gym foundations and body weight on-ramp are great for my kids and even though they hate it during the workout they love it after they are done. I also like what MTNTOUGH stands for and their founders being ex-military is even more appealing to me. I like how they explain the Why of the programming and offer a PDF of their workouts. It is a great app to get your fitness journey started and maintain it.

App review Mike H
I just renewed this for the second year! Fantastic programs and I appreciate the constant addition of new material. The ease of use within the app is flawless. I know this isn’t app specific, but The entire program is phenomenal. Truly a great combo of mind, body, and recovery which is really unique.
The ability to easily jump around to different sections is great. Go from 45-70 to monthly challenge, to a PT workout, all within a couple of clicks.
A suggestion would be to consider some sort of workout tracking within the app. I do track all of this either on paper or within my Garmin Connect, but there are times where it would be nice to have previous times, weights used, etc all within the app itself instead of having to go through Garmin connect to find this info. Not a huge issue, however I do think it could take this to the next level. Thanks to the MTNTOUGH team for all you do.

Incredible App for Fitness
I suffered a pretty serious injury in the military. I pretty much hadn’t worked out seriously for a couple years. Had surgery and then COVID started. Couldn’t complete my PT recovery and tried a lot of different apps and programs. Nothing worked. I was either not able to do the workouts or my form was bad and ended up hurting something and couldn’t train for weeks. I saw MTNTOUGH advertised on my Instagram feed and downloaded it to give it a try. I’m now hooked. I use the app almost every day for my workouts. The coaching is incredible. I love that the focus is on good clean reps and maintaining form. The instructions are clear and I really loved how they scale the workouts depending on your ability. My kids are often with me watching and following along as well. When I travel it’s extremely helpful to be able to do the workouts no matter where I am. This is a great app and everyone should be using it!
