the great meme war,
Solid start, one major issue
While it is helpful to have a dedicated list that branches across multiple streaming platforms for programming, I have one key issue I want to address for the people at MAL. You need a dedicated ‘write review’ button on the shows listed. I want to write a review on a particular show so many of the detractors will understand or at least acknowledge the sub theme of the show, however, I’m only able to look at other people’s reviews they’ve written. No dedicated write review option, and apparently there is supposed to be one under the review option. I find this same issue applies to the manga section as well. A dedicated option for it will allow for a more free flowing wave of takes in various shows that will either pull in new viewers or push them away, and I would like to see a more broad based setup of them rather than the typical 4chan style ‘only popular posts stay up’ because that’s what I’ve been noticing with reviews that are up-it’s only the ones with significant attention. Beyond that glaring issue, solid 8/10 setup and certainly useful app
GeomtrydashRater,
A good start, bright future, good move to put it out now in a usable state although unfinished.
I think it was a fine move to put the app out in its current state, while there are still many QOL, minor, major updates and improvements, to have the app in a working state, still nice & built, is incredibly useful.
Understandably there are many suggestions, complaints, etc. but I’ve used this app a lot more than I thought and is really a one-up over the sluggish website on web (on a phone), even with some missing features.
I hope development continues though since this is a really useful accessory to MAL, and since it’s release a few months ago I haven’t heard much so I hope it’s still having care put into it. Marketing the app better would be a suggestion too, considering I only heard of it through its initial release when the release post on the forums was on the front page. Thanks for this app, and Good luck on the future of the app.
Curiossity,
Glad to have but needs some adjustments
The app has been a long time coming and so I am grateful to have it, but I find I still use the website more because the app needs work. One of the major let downs for me is that the “add to list” and “favorite” buttons are not immediately visible like on the website and other 3rd party apps. Sadly you have to click a button and wait for the screen to load, albeit a quick load, just to figure out if it’s already on your list or what episode you stopped at. It seems to me that there is also no advanced search page. You also can’t tell if an anime is on your “plan to watch” list or if you just haven’t added it to anything since it automatically highlights “plan to watch” if you haven’t watched it.

This last bit is more of personal preference than an actual issue. I think the app should at least have the option of different views. As it is now it seems like everything is so zoomed in only a few things can fit on the screen. I feel like the app should be made to mirror the mobile version of the website just a little more or at least have the option to change it to look a bit more like it.
Aureza12,
A Great Start!
Before this wonderful first party app was released, I used a third party app that synced with my MyAnimeList account. That app worked fine, but eventually it stopped working properly due to issues with the API (or lack thereof, I can’t remember what the issue was exactly). After that third party app stopped working, I used a rather convoluted workaround that involved using the AniList app, then using a Chrome extension to sync my AniList account to MAL and automatically update my MAL account. MAL is my favorite anime and manga database, so I’m sticking with it no matter what.

Then when I heard that MAL was working on a first party app, I was ecstatic. The day finally came when 1.0 was released, and it’s a fantastic start. Kudos to the devs for making such a clean, pleasing, and easy-to-use UI. Having used the app for several weeks now, I have no complaints, because the features that I want that aren’t here yet, are features I know that the devs are dilligently working on. I’m excited to see this app grow more and more in excellence. Keep up the great work devs!
Th3_Pump_Squad,
The Exact thing I’ve been asking for.
Ever since I came to the realization that I’m starting to watch too much anime and I needed to keep track of what I watched, thus resulting in me joining the site back in January, MyAnimeList has done worlds for my watching experience. The fact that’s it’s being transferred to a mobile app I can use nearly anywhere makes it all the more better now. From what I’ve seen, there are very few bugs and glitches that really hinder my use of the site. It’s all in all a solid app. I’m aware that it is still in progress of being developed but if it could be possible to implement a dark mode or color customizers to the mobile version like there is in the desktop version, then it would be a lot easier for the eyes on those who watch their shows in the dark. But if there is a way to implement this on the app version, please let me know. All in all solid app and it’s just about everything i’d imagine and more from a phenomenal site like MyAnimeList. Thanks for your time!
bokehu,
Love the app, one flaw though
I had been waiting for a MyAnimeList app for the longest time. I didn’t discover this app till a couple months ago but this is almost exactly what I expected. I love the app, a true game changer. My only issue and why I give this a 4 star instead of a 5 stars is because I wish everything was in app. When I tap on reviews, or voice actors/actresses, I wish everything would pop up in app instead of taking it into the browser version. I think another small thing I wish the app had was “next episode air dates”, “myanilist” on the AppStore had this feature where it would track upcoming episodes, that was the coolest and most convenient thing, would be revolutionary if MyAnimeList had it. Overall fantastic app and happy that there is a mobile version of already an amazing website.
B_W Chaos,
Needs more
As a start this app is fine, it has the basic functions needed from an app by MAL. However, I feel it is missing some key functions.

The first would be browsing. I find myself often browsing via genre and in the app you can do that, for both anime and manga. Instead when you go to x series and click on one of the genres it belongs to it opens up the website instead. Granted when it takes you to the website you are automatically signed in which is a blessing, but I still wish you could do that on the app instead.

The second would be writing a review. You can only rate and say your status for x series (completed, plan to read, reading, etc.) but you can’t write a review or even start a discussion. Once again it takes you to the website. I feel like writing a review should be an option.

Lastly would be favoriting. Unless I’m missing something can’t seem to find a favorites tab. I know that I have favorited series, characters, and some authors but in the app I can’t seem to find it. If this is a function that is missing think it should be added soon along with the above functions.

Overall the app is in a decent place. It has the bare essentials but it doesn’t feel quite finished. I don’t if it’s because they want to stick with the website more than the app but I would like to see this app succeed. As an avid user of MAL both the website and the app, I think the app could use a little more attention.
DietCora,
Confusing and Missing a Manga List
I am incredibly happy that MAL finally has an app! However, I do have a couple of issues with it in its current state. First - and this is the lesser of my critiques - I find navigating the app a bit confusing and cramped. I can’t really put my finger on it, but I just find navigating the app to be a bit of an issue. This may just be a personal problem, but if they could maybe make some changes to make the app reflect the MAL website a bit more, that would be great. Finally, the lack of a way to track and rate manga is really annoying. I am just getting into the world of manga, and I was really hoping I could use this app as a companion in that journey. But unfortunately, I have found no way to track and rate manga within the app, something I hope they fix soon. If this app was a bit less tough to navigate, and it had a manga list, it would be just what I had hoped. That all being, I believe this is a promising start, and I can’t wait for the app to improve!
Iamsofansy2014,
Not the best
I love that we were able to get an app for MAL, but it just doesn’t live up to what I was expecting. I just joined MAL this month (November 2020) after a long time of not recording my anime/manga and deciding to try it out. I used the site on my phone which I thought was amazing. Then I realized MAL had just gotten an app and downloaded it myself thinking it would be more efficient to use. The layout is simple and easy enough to use, but there’s too little on it and there’s no manga list on the app either. I have used the site MAL on both my laptop and phone, and I love it, but the app? Not so much. You can only search for anime on the app and not the characters, manga, people, etc. it’s even hard to look for recommendations and just browsing for anime when it only presents you with the top airing, just added, top upcoming, seasonal animes, etc. the app really isn’t that useful and I’d rather use the site than the app. Plus every time you click on reviews, characters, and such, the app redirects you to the site instead which really loses the whole point of the app.
NOLUIBEI?!?!,
Needs a few things...
Needs a manga section for my page and just in general. There is no way to search manga on the app or on my page. On my page there isn’t even a manga section for my favorite manga or my list. Add this please!!!

Also there is no way to write reviews on the app or look at the top anime or manga or characters or people. Add this too please!!!

However, so far the app looks nice and I really like the interface and cleanliness of it. I also like how it notifies me of important information about the things I have on my lists. It keeps me up to date on things. If it just had those other things... If I could access everything the website has to offer on this app then it would be a easy 5 stars. I probably would even pay money to support it at that point, but right now it is just missing too many valuable things that can only be accessed via the website
