Version history

2.16.1
2023-06-22
• Autoplay behavior has been corrected to be off by default. Autoplay can be turned on my tapping the ∞ button in the video player.
• Certain network conditions, such as in-flight WiFi, could cause users to be signed out and have their downloads deleted. We’ve improved how the app handles network errors and this should no longer happen.
• Autoplay can now be toggled on/off within app settings, as well as the video player.
• Fixed an autoplay bug where a video would sometimes get skipped.
2.16
2023-05-29
Our big focus for this release has been on improving the video player experience. Here’s what we have for you:
• Autoplay — When you finish watching a video, a recommendation for what to watch next will be shown. If Autoplay is on, the recommended video will automatically begin playing after ten seconds. To toggle Autoplay off, simply tap the infinity symbol in the video player.
• Skip Forward/Back — We added video player controls to skip back or forward 10 seconds at a time (the double tap gesture also still works for this).
• PiP preferences — You can now control whether or not picture-in-picture is automatically started when leaving a video (this behavior can be changed in the Player Preferences section of app settings).
• Controls for Autoplay, playback speed, and subtitles have been moved to the bottom of the video player for easier access.
• Redesigned playback speed menu no longer obscures the entire video player.
• Video and channel name are now shown in the fullscreen video player overlay.

There are also a few of other improvements outside of the video player:
• Links in video descriptions to other Nebula videos now open inside the app.
• The keyboard now opens automatically when you go to Search.
• Added the context menu to videos in the channel playlist view.
• Renamed and rearranged a few things in app settings.
• Adjusted spacing of the fullscreen video player controls.

Bug Fixes
• There was a bug where dismissing a notification for a video would cause that video to automatically play, or for you to just see a black screen, when you next opened the app. This is now fixed.
• Some users have reported downloads disappearing. To investigate this issue, we have added a few diagnostics. Please continue to let us know if you’re running into this.
• Fixed an issue that could prevent Nebula exclusive podcasts from appearing.
• Playback speed preferences are now properly persisted by the PiP player after pausing and resuming video.
• Removed Clear Progress and Mark As Played from context menu in the podcast episode detail view.
• Minor tweaks to spacing on the Featured view.

Now if you'll excuse us, we have some shrines to clear and a kingdom to save...
2.15
2023-03-29
We're back with another update focused on polish and bug fixes. We have dropped support for iOS 14. Please be sure you are on iOS 15 or higher to continue receiving app updates.

Improvements
• Relative timestamps are now more granular for videos less than 24 hours old. Videos older than 24 hours show absolute dates.
• The video player's "skip back" button can now be used to jump to the previous video.
• Podcast context menus have been simplified, and you can now initiate downloads from the podcast episode view.
• Watch History now shows progress bars on thumbnails and loads your history faster.
• Improvements to the networking layer which should help with battery and bandwidth usage.
• The delay for automatically hiding video player controls has been increased from 3 seconds to 5 seconds.
• Download progress indicator in dark mode now looks nicer.
• Markdown is now handled by iOS's built-in support, and the third-party library we were previously using has been removed. (Underscores in URLs are no longer interpreted as Markdown.)

Bug Fixes
• Pausing and restarting a video in PiP no longer resets the playback speed to 1x.
• Playback speed preference should once again persist across videos.
• Fixed several memory leaks which should reduce memory usage and address crashing that could occur after watching a lot of videos.
• Eliminated some crashes that could occur when...
• Sharing content
• Showing alerts
• Downloading videos on a very slow connection
• The app was refreshing auth tokens
2.14.2
2023-03-10
• Fixed an internal reporting tool
2.14.1
2023-03-09
• Autoplay was mistakenly disabled by default, now the default state is on. It can be disabled in settings if desired.
• Fixed an issue that could cause a crash while syncing media progress.

New Stuff
• Podcast downloads.
• Listen progress is now shown on podcast thumbnails.
• Added quick actions to podcast episodes for downloading, marking episodes as played, and clearing listen progress.

• Fixed a bug that would occasionally keep playing audio after dismissing a video.
• Video player controls are no longer automatically hidden when a video is paused.
• Fixed a bug where the player controls could become obscured after returning from PiP.
• Sometimes after dimsising the video player, the app would get stuck showing a splashscreen. That should no longer happen.
• Fixed a couple of crashes introduced in the previous app version (2.13).
• Fixed a bug with “Watch Next Lesson” that could cause the wrong lesson to play or the app to crash.

Cajun IT Guy,
Vastly Improved Since Release
I was one of the first people to subscribe to and download the Nebula app on iOS. The app was decent, but missed a few features I had come to rely on in YT. Notably, these were background listening and the ability to minimize the video window to find other content without closing. I’m happy to say, the background listening feature has been added, and although I’m still waiting for the minimized window, it’s not something that forces me to use the YT app (and continue paying for YT Premium, which I’m going to do regardless). I also like to scroll the comment section from time to time, but I understand the decision by the creators/devs to decide against or delay implementing that feature due to the technical, creative or even legal complexity and liability that may entail. One more thing: I’ve noticed a huge increase in the responsiveness of the app since last using it. So I say well done devs and creators, for banding together with a vision for increased freedom and ownership in your careers. I can personally say that the risk you took and all the hard work done will always be rewarded by me and all others who appreciate such displays of intelligence and character.
ThePyroChemist,
Only One Major Issue
I love this platform and what it’s about, I really do. Letting creators make what they want to make, without having to worry about the restrictions present on so many other platforms, it really leads to some high quality stuff. There is a level of care and value that I just haven’t gotten from any other service.

However, I have one very big issue, and it’s recurring. See, I download nearly all of my videos onto my iPad ahead of time; I’m without signal/data more often than not. Being able to download the content and watch later is crucial for me. However, on 3 separate occasions, my downloaded videos just outright disappear. I am not running low on space on the iPad, and I am given absolutely no information as to why this happens, before or after.

If I could only have videos downloaded for a certain amount of time, I could understand that. If I could only download so many, I get it. Yet, I have been given no reason whatsoever for this behavior by the app. If it were to be fixed, I’d gladly give 5 stars, because I love everything else. But when I open the app expecting my downloads to be there, when I’m away from the internet for several says at a time, and the downloads are empty, it’s nearly frustrating enough to make me want to delete the app altogether.
RubberBop,
The Contributors Are Amazing, But...
I exclusively follow a number of creators only on Nebula rather than YT now because I really want the platform to succeed. But there are some issues: 1) Apple tvOS: Maybe a bit of an overstatement, but I can just about fix dinner in the time it can take to load the app. I mean minutes pass before it comes up. 2) For those creators whose content is more newsy (i.e. needs to be timely), I cannot seem to find out what is the publishing process schedule on Nebula v. YT. This is causing me to have to rely on YT while these creators are actively promoting Nebula. Yes, I have reached out to a couple of such creators and trying to see if it is on their end, but this is something that should be considered and part of the ToS to the creators. It needs to be as close and hopefully better than on YT. Sorry, if anyone thinks these criticisms are unfair, but it is the competitive environment the app faces. Again, the content creators I have moved from YT and found since being on Nebula is wonderful and now numbers in excess of 30 and still building. Hooray for Nebula for bringing this together!
_j5155_,
Good concept, poor execution
Overall, I like Nebula and the platform’s creators. However, I’m running into a few issues with the iOS app that are fairly irritating.
1. The app logs you out if your device is connected to a wifi network that cannot access Nebula servers, such as wifi networks aboard planes used for in flight entertainment or free messaging. This makes it impossible to use the app while still being able to receive messages on a plane.
2. Controls for media that is being displayed on a seperate device via Google Cast are difficult to locate. In other apps, while your device is casting, the current queue and pause/play controls are still where they may be when you are watching the media on your device. However, Nebula returns you to the home screen after beginning a cast, and puts the controls behind a non-obvious cast button. It would be much more intuitive to have a Picture-in-Picture-like display of the thumbnail of the current video, with controls overlayed above it, and the ability to easily manage the upcoming queue, similar to other apps that support Google Cast.

I really like the concept of Nebula, but it would be a lot more useful if these issues were fixed. Thank you!
PantsToek,
Love the content. App needs work.
The gorgeous video and deep content of Nebula blows away that “skip ad” platform. You can dial your own price a bit by shopping for subscription deals, but I recommend paying more…money goes to the creators.

Unfortunately, the apps are very frustrating to use. Why does bookmarking a video completely reload the screen, losing my place in the feeds? Lots of little deficiencies in the player that will remind you of one of the also ran streaming networks. I also really with I could send a share to a non-subscriber. It’s hard for me to encourage my friends to get interested when I tell them they have to pay before they can see any of the awesome content.

I really want to see Nebula succeed, and I hope the content continues to get more diverse and that creators. I want everyone involved to get rich and prove that I don’t need to press the skip button on another insurance ad in order for content creation to be profitable. The app needs to be a quality experience before my kids and friends will give up the feeder bar of easy-mode “just jump in and hit play” algorithmic video.
assassinscreedivblackflag,
Fantastic app with only one problem
Let me start off by saying I absolutely love this service. I feel like I’m directly supporting everyone on here more effectively than YT, and the content is right up my alley. The only problem I’ve had (and the ONLY reason I’m not giving 5 stars right away) is that whenever I turn on notifications for a creator, it automatically turns back off any time I close the app or even leave the app to go somewhere else. What usually ends up happening is I’ll see an upload notification for one of the creators on YT and then I’ll go watch it on Nebula, but with many creators putting out their content on Nebula days before it’s on YT, I wish I got Nebula notifications so I could know. I check the app every couple days but sometimes I just miss an upload by even a few hours or I go a few days without looking and all of a sudden everyone I follow has put out a new vid.

If the notification bug gets fixed, I’ll change my review to 5 stars in a heartbeat. Like I said, fantastic app, love everyone and everything on it, just the one tiny problem.
Sally3733,
Great concept, just needs further polishing
The idea of a streaming service where the money has a much better chance of going straight to the creators with no ads is fantastic. There are many good things about this service. The UI is very fluid and easy to use. The videos keep playing outside of the app, allowing a more flexible user experience. Videos from your favorite creators are pushed forward in a reliable way. There are, unfortunately, many minor issues present. You cannot choose how you sort video listing from a channel. It is only listed in reverse sequential order, beginning with the most recent upload. There is no mini player, so you cannot look for videos while watching a different video. You cannot filter your search in any way, instead you get an erratic list of creators and videos seemingly at random. This service is a great next step in the scene of individual content creation, but it needs to catch up just a little bit on the smaller, yet still very important factors.
TimSpears,
Love the service. App still needs work
Recurring theme in the reviews, I know. I want to use this rather than YT, but it is frustrating since my normal preference (I’m sure for most people) is full screen viewing, and it’s just so circuitous to get into and out of videos.

I have to tap on a tiny button in the top corner to get the full screen. Pause/play/skip are very small and close together. Most frustrating though is the many touches required at the end of a video to make it go away: first tap the screen to reveal controls; I have just over 1 second to find what I need before the controls clear again; tap the not-full-screen button; now I can swipe down or touch the top left corner, which makes a PIP, which I don’t want because the video is finished, then I have to tap the x in the top left.

I feel like I spend more time navigating than watching.
PlaSmaK1ng,
What this app offers(educational and informative videos) is fantastic but…
This app is one of the best places to find unaltered, unfiltered videos from some of the best educational YouTubers around ! The price and what is offered here is Phenomenal and I highly suggest anyone who follows channels like Real life lore, second thought, Wendover Productions, or TL;DR news to absolutely check this out ! They offer many more channels but that gives you a gist of what’s on here. Only real issue is the app has a few functionality issues that could(and I’m sure will) be fixed. Things such your video closing out when swiping the scroll bar of a video, videos themselves closing out when trying it minimizing them, and overall UI could definitely be better. Nothing too serious but can be annoying enough to not get 5 stars.
No longer safe,
Incredible content, please improve the app...
I’ve read a few other reviews that reflect my thoughts as well: so happy to more directly support some of my favorite creators, and discover new ones I now love, but I wish the app did XYZ... My struggle with the app is it has about a 40% chance of loading the Home Screen. I can tap to My Shows and browse though that, but it’s not displayed in quite the way the Home Screen. And it usually just won’t load.

I also wish it would pay more attention to my preferences for what I’m selecting and following. If I follow a show or creator, I shouldn’t have to manually search to continue a series I was in the middle of.

Ultimately, again, love the content. Wish the app was up to the creators’ quality level. Will definitely change to 5 stars if an update fixes these gripes.
