Who do I contact regarding...

I have had a subscription for the Plus through Apple which renews each month with payment. Today, I clicked on the App, started watching a program without any problems, decided to try another program & a screen came up offering me a 7-day free trial & wouldn’t let me watch anything else unless I signed up for another paid subscription which just renewed 2 weeks ago. Tried “restore purchase” & tried to sign back in...still refused my attempt to open. Clearly, the App Store says I have an active subscription. I sent an email to Smithsonian through their App feedback option, who in turn is replying they can’t help me. And says to contact Apple. Seems like Smithsonian Network says it’s all on Apple to assist me—too late today, so, I guess I will try tomorrow.

Follow-up…deleted App & reinstalled & now, it opens programming without a problem. Smithsonian kinda passed the problem on to Apple which is interesting since most other Subscription Apps are usually anxious to assist or suggest solutions. Which,simply, could’ve been to just delete the App & reinstall.

Why Pay

I don’t get it, every other app for streaming out there is free with you logging in with your cable tv info etc. This one is not! They want you to subscribe and pay that’s nuts... I will just stick to watching it TV since I pay for cable already... Crazy greed out there, you develop an app just make money on the adverts no need to charge monthly...

Update: Okay, that’s well that will work... but on another note it would be nice if you told more people that on the app its self... Then like most apps give people the option to login watching through their cable provider inside the app instead of using a browser... If you did that more than half of the bad reviews would go away trust me on that... just my opinion... Thanks for the response...

Beautiful documentaries and Amazing wildlife cinematography

Smithsonian has been a world class museum for almost as long as the USA has been a country. The science and education that the institution has provided since its inception in 1846 is incredible. All that knowledge and exploration has translated very well into the videos they produce, from exploring delicate ecosystems to delving into the history of ancient civilizations, they continue to capture thrilling and timely movies and tv shows. This Smithsonian app is a must have for anyone interested in history, nature and science. They have tried to keep up with providing new full length shows for this app, but it seems the process is slow, that would be my only complaint, but there is enough currently available to keep you entertained for quite a while. I’m happy to keep my subscription going, not only to support this great institution, but to satisfy my curiosity about the history, nature, and science in our amazing world.

Why

So I have had the other Smithsonian app, the original one. And I was free to watch any thing about the Earth’s rich and amazing history and cultures. So when it said the new app was even better, I thought that it would. So when I downloaded the app it wanted me to confirm my actual email address, kinda normal, then my actual password, never heard that before. So I didn’t give away my password and started looking around on it. Then it said that I needed a stupid monthly subscription to watch stuff. It was six dollars a month. And I am only 14, I don’t have a job. But on the original app you could do all the same stuff, but not verify your password or pay six dollars a month. So I think that Smithsonian should cut this stupid app and keep the original, much better one. Because they already get money from the museum and the ads pay them. And secondly if children who are too young to earn money want to expand their knowledge, then they shouldn’t have to pay for it. So I am glad to contribute to this apps 3.7 review average.

Confusing Disappointing Service

Save your money. This service is never going to succeed. If you have a TV service provider and you’ve watched any of their content but notice the catalog is missing don’t fall for signing up thinking you will get anything more because that’s not the case and their answer for that is a joke. It’s bad enough they want extra and don’t allow for a TV service login but they want more for nothing more. Some of their shows have 10 or so seasons yet you can’t view anything more then the last season or 2 and you can’t find the rest of them anywhere. It’s a bit ridiculous how they’ve set this up.

Maybe when they provide the rest of the catalog seems their ads for the site says al these countless hours of content it’ll be worth the additional cost. It’s a shame because I love their content, what I can see of it but the service is a joke.

I also don’t understand why they have 2 services. They have this one and then one you can log into at a http://tve. Web url with your login and it also provides nothing more and can’t be viewed on anything but a browser. No access with streaming boxes at all.

The shows are fragmented, the service is fragmented and frankly with the split of 2 services that provide the same thing makes the way you consume the content and pay for it fragmented. It’s poorly laid out and that’s disappointing.

Needs work

This app needs a lot of work. You can’t watch it full screen on your phone and it doesn’t work sometimes lol. I love Smithsonian and would pay 2-3 extra dollars a month just so they could make this app better. Of course, the cable subscription thing is dumb but that’s probably not the fault of the developers. Someone higher up is trying to save money or just has an old school way of thinking and that’s why this app is so far behind from everyone else. Smithsonian is 10 times better than curiosity stream so I’ll always appreciate their great content but I’m hoping this app improves sooner than later. Is it as bad as everyone is saying? No, not really but it’s insane it’s with how the whole thing is set up.

App has a horrible interface and user experience

I don’t understand why I pay for a subscription and don’t get access to the latest episodes that appear for cable subscribers. To top that, I have to deal with a horrible interface that is jumpy and doesn’t allow fully functional FF and RW capabilities while watching a program. I have reported all of these concerns - along with a few others - to customer support and just got the gratuitous back-and-forth and then a passoff. BLAH!! As a professional web developer and programmer, this is unacceptable to me. You CANNOT launch a faulty product like this, that requires a paid subscription, and expect customers to renew each month. My subscription ends in a week and I will not be renewing.

Great content but videos pause themselves randomly

As the title says, there is some great content to be had here at a great price. Most of the lower reviews are about the confusion regarding the various subscriptions that have been made available over the years, not the app itself.

Problem is, for MONTHS this app has had an issue with randomly pausing itself, particularly when using headphones. It happens with various different headphones, so it’s not those, and this is the only app it happens to so it’s unlikely to e the iPad. Still, I restored the iPad and set it up as new just in case, but the issue persists.

I have no idea why this is happening but it’s an immense frustration.

Smithsonian Channel or not Smithsonian Channel?

That is the question. With DirecTV the Smithsonian Channel is only available through the “DirecTV HD Extra Pack”. It is not available on any of their tiered packages. This means you have to PAY EXTRA to get the Smithsonian Channel on DirecTV. But to access this app (once your “trial” is up) you have to also pay them. You’re being charged twice! You should be able to log into this app using your service provider credentials and if you’re paying for access to the Smithsonian Channel through your service provider then you should be granted access to this app as well. Regardless of what they say, you are being CHARGED TWICE for access to the Smithsonian Channel. Don’t waste your time and, more importantly, your money. Very disappointed in this app. :(

Greedy

I logged in through my provider and they still don’t offer full seasons as other apps do. This is a cheesy way to get more money out of your audience by charging for episodes for a complete season. Smithsonian must be a CBS affiliates as there one of the worst for being greedy also like their programming is gold or something. Some Free advice for you, do like almost all others do and don’t limit your customers that already pay for your programming & you’ll increase the size of your programming audience. This isn’t rocket science!!
