3.14
2020-06-03
OmniGraffle 3.14 improves reliability when OmniGraffle documents are synced with third party providers. This release introduces a new file type that avoids compatibility issues with certain sync platforms, such as Dropbox, while maintaining great performance.

• File Formats: A new default single file format has been added. This is a zipped version of the pre-existing file package format which has significant performance advantages over the old single file format that encoded images as XML data. This combines most of the benefits of the pre-existing formats in a way that is compatible with file syncing services like Dropbox. Versions prior to OmniGraffle for iOS 3.14 and OmniGraffle for Mac 7.16 will not be able to read this format.
• All new documents will be created in the new format regardless of what the template uses.
• A legacy format export option has been added.

• Reference Manual: The localized reference manuals have been updated for changes prior to this release.
• Visio Import (PRO): Fixed a couple importing bugs that prevented some files from importing.
• SVG Import: Fixed a bug importing lines that have zero dimension.

If you have any feedback or questions, we’d love to hear from you! The Omni Group offers free tech support; you can email [email protected], call 1–800–315–6664 or 1–206–523–4152, or tweet @omnigraffle.

3.13
2020-04-08
OmniGraffle 3.13 is focused on improving compatibility with Visio.

• Visio Export: Added support for top/bottom text margins.
• Visio Export: PANOSE data is exported when available. This helps decide what font is used for substiution when necessary.
• Visio Import: Added RelQuadBezTo support for .vssx files which improves Visio stencil compatibility.
• Visio Import: Fixed cases of text objects not being created large enough to fit the text.
• Visio Import: Documents previously triggering the Incorrect Block error are able to be imported.
• Visio Import: Unexpected characters in unsupported attributes were causing some files to fail to import. Those attributes are now ignored.
• Visio Import: Fixed a bug causing some EMF images in vsdx files to have components flying off into space.
• Visio Import: When a Visio file type is associated with an UTI OmniGraffle doesn't expect, check the file extension instead to determine if the file can be imported. This should fix compatibility problems when other applications are installed that use Visio file types.
• Visio Import: Text placed inside groups is imported.
• Visio Import: Fixed a crash when importing .vss files containing EMF images.
• Visio Export: Fixed multiple bugs with exporting images. Images are now exported to PNG format unless already in BMP, WMF, or EMF. This results in significantly smaller file sizes than previously.
• Visio Export: Corrected export of text alignment and offsets values.
• Visio Export: Override Visio's auto-routing in the exported file so that lines retain their path set in OmniGraffle. This will cause some files to appear with connection lines on top of objects. Adjusting any object should fix that.
• Visio Export: Objects are positioned on the canvas when the canvas is using a non-zero origin in OmniGraffle.
• Visio Export: Line labels are exported as line labels instead of separate text objects.
• Text: When typing immediately after editing on a label begins, the text has the correct style and insertion point.
• Text: Text set to be bottom or top aligned are positioned correctly when the shape is rotated.
• Gestures: It is possible to initiate a zoom gesture when your two fingers do not touch the screen as the same time and one is over an object.
• Images: When editing the mask of a scaled image, the image's position will stay static.
• Linked Resource Folders: Changes to the contents of linked folders are picked up immediately and files needing to be downloaded can be selected.

• Images: Improved performance when using large images.
• Document Browser: The Copy Current Canvas as PDF option is no longer available from the Document Browser.
• Documentation: Updated the Reference Manual for corrections and clarification.
• Gestures: Restored the ability to manipulate Bézier handles individually. The gesture for this has changed and instead of a second finger hold on the canvas, a second finger tap on the canvas will switch between modes.
• Gestures: Bézier handles can be pulled out of the vertices on shapes.
• Gestures: Sub-selection within a group can be changed without selecting the whole group first.
• Gestures: Gestures continue to function after using the iOS system Undo via the 3-finger gesture.
• Gestures: Fixed a bug preventing dragging objects a small distance due to the drag being incorrectly interpreted as a tap.
• Gestures: Image mask mode can once again be easily activated with a single tap on an already selected object.
• Gestures: It is possible to select a smaller object positioned on top of an already selected object.
• General: Restored the warning when opening a file that contains images in text fields. These images are not supported on iOS.
• Inspectors: Restored the Convert Text to Shape option in the Text inspector.
• Visio Support: Visio files can be imported when the Microsoft Visio Viewer is installed.
• General: Drag handles appear when a multi-selection includes a group and a line connected to both an object inside and outside the group.
• Undo: When a connected object changes position due to using the 3-finger Undo gesture, the screen redraws the correct content.
• Siri Shortcuts: Restored Siri Shortcuts for opening documents.
• Canvases sidebar: Objects can be locked via the sidebar's contextual menu.
• Stability: Fixed a crash on undoing a Text Overflow setting change.

3.11.1
2019-11-20
We've heard your feedback about how difficult it can be to reposition objects on the canvas so we've made the following changes:
• The delay before the selected object begins to lift up to show the context menu has been increased. This gives you more time to initiate different actions such as dragging.
• Unselected objects will instantly respond to gestures so you can immediately drag objects. If you need to pan the canvas but objects are in the way, a 2-finger drag can be used.
• iOS drag and drop has been disabled on the canvas. You can still drag objects from the Canvases list to other apps.
We will be looking at other additional improvements in future releases.

• Stability: Fixed a crash most commonly encountered after using the Share option that results in a different app being activated automatically.
• Stability: Using any of the Share options that result in an image, such as Copy as Image and Copy Document, keeps the current document open.
• Share: Send to Photos only creates one image.

• Document Browser — OmniGraffle now uses Apple’s built-in document browser for file management. With Apple’s file browser, you can sync your documents using iCloud Drive or a third-party sync solution that fully supports OmniGraffle files, or you can continue to sync your documents via OmniPresence.
• OmniPresence — Downloaded files synced via OmniPresence are now stored locally in a subfolder of the OmniPlan folder on your device. By default, OmniPresence does not download larger synced files automatically; tap the OmniPresence icon in the file browser toolbar to open the download manager and choose files to download.
• Syncing Templates and Stencils — Stencils and Templates stored in the OmniGraffle folder in iCloud Drive (if you have iCloud Drive enabled) will automatically appear in the Template picker when creating a new document and in the Stencil browser when editing a document.
• Context Menus — Quickly perform common actions via context menus, accessed via 3D Touch or the touch and hold gesture.
• Dark Mode — When your iOS device’s Appearance is set to Dark, OmniGraffle’s interface will now automatically switch to Dark Mode.
• Multitasking — Work with two OmniGraffle documents simultaneously in Split View, or open several documents in multiple spaces on iPadOS.
• Thumbnail Previews — Preview images are generated and saved as part of the file when a document is edited. Existing files will not display a preview in the file browser until they are edited.
• Alignment — Added a new preference to control the alignment behavior. You can now toggle between Align to First-selected Object and Align to Selection.
• Omni Automation — We’ve made a number of improvements to Omni Automation, including support for input dialogs and file output. For more details, see the Omni Automation Release Notes (which can be found in the API Reference documentation).
• Gestures — Added support for the new 3-finger system gestures for Undo, Redo, Copy, and Paste – 3-finger tap to see the new options! Gestures now respond faster to touch input and less utilized gestures have been removed.
• Templates — Refreshed the diagramming templates with new designs.

3.10.1
2019-03-14
Version 3.10.1:

• Localizations — Localized the various UI changes that were made in version 3.10.
• Labels on Small Objects — Fixed a bug that caused label text to not appear on objects with text margins larger then the object itself.
• Label Width — Fixed a bug that caused the width of labels with certain settings to not adjust while typing.

Version 3.10:

• Fill Shape with Text — Added a new Fill Shape with Text option to the Text Position inspector that fills the inner bounds of a shape with the label text. This makes it much easier to keep text within a diamond shape in a flowchart or as a creative background on a Bézier shape.
• Text Flow — Added a new Text Flow option to the Text Position inspector that wraps the object’s label around the perimeter of the object.
• Text Rotation Controls — Added relative and absolute text rotation controls to the Text Postion inspector.
• Object Alignment — Object alignment is now performed based on object positions on the canvas, not z-order. Align to top means OmniGraffle aligns the selected objects with the top of the top-most object. Align to bottom means OmniGraffle aligns the selected objects with the bottom of the bottom-most object.
• Canvas Preview — Fixed a bug where the preview thumbnail for a canvas sometimes wouldn’t update when objects were added to the canvas via drag and drop or copy and paste.
• Text Copy and Paste — Fixed a bug that caused font family data to be lost when copy and pasting text between objects.
• Selection — Fixed the multi-touch gesture for adding items to an existing selection (touch and hold on the first object, and then single tap the other objects you would like to select).

Gesture Issues
The UI updates are very good and intuitive (especially if you are familiar with previous versions). But this latest version has huge problems with the gestures I’ve used from earlier versions. For example I use “Duplicate” very often. I touch and hold the object and then two-finger tap where I want the duplicate to be. Instead of duplicating the object, the original object displays it is selected. The older versions would have selected the original object as soon as it was touched. If I two-finger tap a second time the object will be duplicated. This is very awkward.

Another problem is that if I tap and hold an object and then two-finger tap (which selects the first object) and then remove my finger from the original object and tap-off to unselect the first object a selection circle is displayed randomly on the screen. If I tap-off again then a selection bubble is displayed. It takes 3 tap-offs to fully clear the selection.

I use an iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil and this issue displays regardless of the proximity of the Apple Pencil. I use this tool professionally and this is costing me time. Please fix the gesture issues and I will bump this back up to 5 stars because the new UI is great.

Frustrating to use
I want to like this app. I want to USE this app. But it’s very clunky. I try to position shapes but they snap to weird positions that aren’t even on the grid. Creating custom stencils was brutally non-intuitive (apparently they don’t show up if you save them in the cloud?) Sometimes it gets into a mode where I can’t even add text boxes. That was the tipping point for me, leading me to write this review. I know there’s a powerful tool underneath here, it’s just HARD to use, especially compared with the desktop version. Not what I would expect from an app for which I’ve paid so much, nor from a company with so much experience. I don’t want to have to carry my laptop with me just to make some basic diagrams—that’s why I though the iPad app would be useful. I’m sorry, but this app is just really not quite there.
RogerJr,
Frustrating, in need of a rewrite
Same application, same frustrations, same bugs as the other versions going back to 1.0. Clearly this application has never been rewritten, as identical bugs and frustrations have been carried forward. Objects are difficult to select, hard to move around, occasionally it’s unresponsive to taps and drags, and performance is laggy as the number of objects grows, even on an iPad Pro with M1. Sometimes your changes are saved, sometimes they’re not – I just now returned to my documents to find that my saved drawing was a much earlier version, and all of my work since that point was lost. Well, Omni Group, I’ve lost my work with your application for the last time. It doesn’t help that it is published by the greediest company on the App Store except maybe Apple themselves. There’s absolutely no way that this application is worth the extreme price! Stay away from this app, and while you’re at it, the rest of the software from this developer isn’t so great either.

Barely Usable
I’ve grumbled through Omnigroup’s bait-and-switch “upgrades” for years now, but have stuck with them because OmniGraffle was the best alternative I’d found for my needs—“was” being the key word here. This version is barely usable on my 2020 iPad Pro. The user interface is infuriating—drawing connecting lines resizes shapes instead, deleting selected objects requires some twisted secret series of gestures, gestures to pan/move/select are confounded, tools that are supposed to stay selected randomly revert, and it isn’t uncommon for the undo button to mysteriously stop working when trying to resolve one of the aforementioned snafus. The company has obviously been hearing about these problems for months or longer and is doing nothing to resolve them. This would be frustrating even if the app weren’t so exorbitantly priced. Not sure what is going on in the company, but whatever it is, we can only hope they get it together soon.
Papa_Glendon,
Handy but annoying and buggy to use.
Interface is mediocre. Implementation is sketch. They need to divide the options for what you want to do and single them out. Every time I go to move an object 9 times out of 10 it resizes the object. Stupid annoying. To the point I feel the need to write this review. Moving an object is a basic function that doesn’t need to be attached to scaling.

Rest of the app is fine. Gonna ask for a refund and go back to open office. Fix your interface and I might come back. Right now I’m sitting at the airport and have made almost zero progress in doing my signal map. As a matter of fact I’m now wasting my time complaining about your app. Thanks for the inspiration.
Yet Another Paul,
Version 3 updates your paid for app into a non-working trial
I purchased OmniGraffle for the iPad when it first came out. I used it off and on. Version 3 comes out as an update. It is not an update. It replaces the full version you paid for with a trial version. Pay more money or give up. Other companies make a new app when they want to charge again (I have GoodNotes 4 and 5 on my iPad at the same time), but OmniGroup just causes the one you paid for to be removed and replaced by a non-functional trial.

I have used Omni products for years. I bought OmniGraffle for the iPad when it first game out. Removing a customer’s ability to use a previously purchased app is simply unacceptable.

I sure am glad they can’t do the same thing on a Mac (at least I hope they can’t). It’s a pity, I used to respect this company.
dacloo,
Unfortunately, useless
I’m a happy customer if Omnigraffle for macOS and I still use it to this day for UX/UI wire framing.

Although the desktop app is becoming really ‘legacy’ now, e.g no way to collaborate in real-time, no objects I can create or import to scale elements ‘9-slice’, it is still for me the most effective way to wireframe, as I never got used to Adobe’s offering and greatly disliking a subscription model to come with that.

The mobile version though to me is useless. Pretty much every file I import from the desktop app is ‘converted’ because it apparently is powered by an entirely different interpreter, rather than shared by the same code-base. Lots of errors and inconsistencies when the file is finally imported. The feature-set is different, which I understand to a certain degree, but is not feasible for a professional workflow.
Lastly the mobile app does not provide any added value either, such a real-time collaboration. Therefore it feels more like a subset app with flaws that doesn’t really know what it’s oughta be.

As an existing customer I therefore recommend leaving this one alone in its current state and instead just the desktop version.
msddsm,
About to give up
I have been using OmniGraffle for many, many years on Mac. I really want to use and like this app. But it is an exercise in frustration with a gesture-based UI that is too fiddly, too complex, and too multi-modal.

Want simply to move a shape? I end up re-sizing it. Want to deselect a entry in the left-side nav bar, it will not, even after tapping Deselect All. Likewise, tapping to rename a label causes the entire list to scroll to the bottom, pushing the item being edited out of site.

Plus, there are some serious data-losing bugs (I am using iCloud for storage and sync).

My suggestion:

1. Have option to invoke isolated, distinct edit modes that do only ONE thing, like moving an item, like resizing an item, like editing labels and text, like changing a color.

2. Fix your bugs. I just lost an hour of work when I went back to the top-level document chooser and then re-opened the same document on the same device to find my last round of edits were gone!

3. Have a non-Edit mode that allows for viewing a document without fear of changing something
co2collectibles,
shady bait and switch into purchasing v3. not me!
been a loyal customer for years, upgraded twice. then they pull the bait and switch. sorry app you paid for gone...? unfair business practice. i’d stay away until they can make this right. heard it’s glitchy anyway.

Update: Developer contacts me and states that both apps are availible for download... Yeah, but one I bought doesn’t work anymore with a newer device and the other one I bought 2 is not on the store anymore. Extra frustrated now since I was reminded that these devs took our money and claim it’s our mistake... There’s better apps out there. Some of the best are free. My review is now negative 1 star... 👎🏼
Unended,
Too cumbersome to be useful
I’d been a long time user of OmniGroup tools on my laptop for years, and wanted to be able to transition over to using it on iPad. This app is just way too clunky to consider it for my workflow. All the tools you need to work are hidden behind so many clicks and settings. It has a lot of features, but they aren’t organized in a way that help you focus. Instead your jumping around between panels and pop-ups to do even the simplest things. I can’t recommend it until OmniGroup makes a serious overhaul to the UI — especially when there are so many better alternatives that aren’t as expensive.
