Description

There are a lot of running apps out there, but they all have something in common: they are either full of ads, are highly expensive or simply are and look very outdated.

Out-Run tries to solve this with a clean and modern look and being 100% free. In addition to that Out-Run is also one of the few running apps that do not require you to create an account, all information is stored locally and thereby protected from any data leaks or privacy scandals. And if you think: "Where is the catch?" - there is none, you can even have a look at the source code and confirm everything being said here, because Out-Run is fully open-source (source-code: https://github.com/timfraedrich/OutRun ).

# MAJOR FEATURES

- Keep full control over your data

- Record your outdoor workouts (Running, Walking, Hiking, Cycling and Skating)

- View detailed statistics

- Export your workouts as GPX or OutRun-Backup (.orbup)

- Fully customise the recording process

- Synchronise with Apple Health

I hope you love Out-Run just as much as I loved making it and if you find anything I should improve upon, please let me know.

It has been quite a long time since the last update and while I am still working on some more fundamental changes to OutRun this update also marks a huge step in the evolution of this app.

I am very happy to announce that OutRun will now be available in ELEVEN additional languages which brings us to a total of thirteen and all of that thanks to a few really great people, who can be found in this project's README inside the source-code repository.

Other than that not much has changed in this version:

- There is a new contributor tab in settings, listing all the people who have considerably added to OutRun
- and the source-code button was moved from 'Support' to 'App-Info'

And that is that.

After receiving a trademark complaint "OutRun" will now be called "Out-Run" in the UK. This update has the main purpose of addressing this complaint.

Additionally it contains the following bug fixes:

- sometimes data was not added properly to Apple Health, this should now be fixed
- ascending and descending altitude were swapped in the statistics, now they are in the right order
- there have been some style issues because of changes in iOS 14, everything should look normally again

And for this update nothing more changed.

This release only contains a few critical bug fixes, which needed to be fixed fast.

Specifically I am talking about:

- way too long waiting times when wanting to record a workout due to a rounding error in the apps logic
- app crashes because of inconsistencies in the data
- map views having the wrong appearance
- an alert talking about there being an error in the logic supposed to record the workouts, even though that logic worked just fine

And that is it when it comes to changes in this version.

It has been way too long since the last release, many of you have reached out and even asked if the project will still be continued, and I'm glad to be able to share some very exciting news regarding that.

OutRun was never a project for profit, I always just wanted a simple fitness tracker that just does its job and does not need me to hand over all my data to some random company. That is why I decided to make OutRun not only free, but also open-source from this day on.

Thank you all so much for your support, I really could not have done it without you and I hope now that the app is free you will be able to recommend it to even more people.

But now let's get into what changed in this update:

- You can now finally pause a workout if you want to take a break and in addition to that the app will also automatically pause if it detects that you are not moving. This was a pretty highly requested feature, so I hope you will enjoy it.

- When finishing a workout you will now get the ability to continue it through a neat little dialog, which will also enable you to discard or save the workout (the latter happening automatically after a certain time).

- There is a share feature now, which you can use to share individual workouts as OutRun-Backups or GPX-file.

- Starting a workout is now faster, because you will not be asked what kind of workout you want to record anymore. To get the old dialog you can still long-press the plus button on the main screen, but you can also just tap the type on the recording screen and even change it after you started the workout. The default type of workout to record can be set in settings.

- Two more workout types were added: OutRun now also supports hiking and skating

- When editing non-essential information like a comment for a workout there now will not be a dialog that it could be fake anymore, this was due to the mechanism behind workout editing and is not fixed

one last thing:

- I hope I finally got to fix the crashing issue a number of people were having, at least sort of. The crashes were due to the map on the recording screen drawing too much performance. People affected by this problem can now just turn the map off in settings to prevent those crashes until a permanent solution is found.

After more than two weeks of frustration I'm glad I can finally present the fix for these annoying crashes some of you have been experiencing. This updates contains lots of changes under the hood, not really worth getting into, the important thing to know is that your workouts should record more reliably now.

Due to the extensive testing and trying to find a solution I had to push the new features aside for a while, but I will get back to them now.

This is just a very small update. The only things that changes are the settings descriptions to make some actions clearer and that the 'Import All' button in the Apple Health import section is now working again.

Just a few days ago I published this app. The response was phenomenal, I would never have expected so much positive and motivating feedback. My expectations where more than exceeded.

But as life goes the first release was far from perfect. So here is what changed:

- This will be most relieving for all the people hesitant to give this app 'Always' location authorisation (which I fully support btw): The app now works with just 'While In Use' authorisation, although when you already installed the initial release you have to go into the iOS Settings and change the permission to 'Never' and then back, so the system realises the change. You know that it worked when there is a blue dot around your time or a blue status bar when you go to the home screen, while recording. Please be sure to check before recording the next workout.

- Some people wanted the ability to sort their timeline, this additionally to filtering for races is now a feature (with more functionality coming with a later release).

- Additionally to being able to change between current speed and rolling pace for the recording stats while you can now also have rolling speed and the overall pace.

- There was a nasty bug for all the people in the US and UK where the unit conversion was a bit messed up. Everything should function normally now, but you might still want to check the Settings page for your weight and manually edited workouts, because there might be inconsistencies.

- When stopping a recording, previously it was very easy to accidentally click 'Cancel' and lose the entire workout (believe me, it happened more than once). Now the app asks for confirmation before resetting the data, so you can still save your workouts even if you slipped.

- I also tried to fix a bug where for some people workout routes would not properly be loaded from Apple Health, I could not replicate the issue myself though, so there is no way to check if it worked, until I hear back from the people that told me about the issue.

- Then there are all the small things, like typos, smaller bugs or just general improvements. Nothing really worth mentioning.

I hope you will enjoy this version even more than the last one. For everyone hoping for other features: I'm working on it, it might take some time before you see the big changes rolling out though, but they will come eventually.

JohnWilker,
Seems to crash if you do anything else
Seems to crash the app if you do anything else while tracking a workout. Several times now I’ve been on a walk and will open my phone to take a picture or use an app and when I get home to save the workout there isn’t one being tracked any more.
Huxley Dunsany,
Clean, simple and elegant: a fantastic modern running app!
The iOS App Store is overflowing with complex “socially integrated” running and fitness apps, many of which are quasi-abandonware and/or are definitely just a mechanism for harvesting and selling user data. It’s so refreshing to see a clean, simple, well-designed running app which ignores all that nonsense and just works well. I’d love to see this include simple “couch to 5K/10K” routines since I’m just getting back into running after a long layoff, but otherwise it’s already fantastic. Kudos to the developers!
theBoxHead,
Just right 👌
Do you like advertisement loaded spy apps pretending to help people by giving them limited functionality while the good features are hidden behind a ridiculously high subscription model?
Neither do I...

This app is refreshingly different!
Functional, clean, easy to use, pay up front, lightweight. Seriously what I want all my apps to be like! Thanks to the developer for being a good guy. Hope this one does very well for you.
kcchangelas,
Simple and Perfect!
Exactly what I was searching for in a running app: Lightweight and private yet detailed with tons of metrics and feedback
The other running apps I used in the past would be filled with a bunch of communities, social features, and some nonsensical crap that I never really used.
Outrun gives users the simplest approach to recording a run but does so in a visually appealing way! Privacy is a well needed plus!
Keep up the good work!
54BelAir,
Great app. Tracking made simple.
The app looks great and I like the idea keeping the information personal. I don’t feel the need to share my activities with everyone I know, nor do I want to be bombarded with ads. This applets me track my ride, and import to Health with none of the extras I don’t need. Well done.

Also... I was having issues and the developer was very quick to respond and resolved it quickly.
rlbgator,
Crashes every time
Hate to leave a negative review, as this may be Apple’s fault, not the developer’s, but I could’ve saved a few bucks if I’d known that this app crashes silently in the background, every time. iPhone 8 on latest OS, all other apps force-quit except podcast player (Overcast) and Outrun. Start a podcast, then start a new workout in Outrun, walk 20 minutes, open phone to check progress. Click on Outrun... old workout gone, app is back at a fresh new start screen.

I do suspect this is Apple, not the dev, but 4 bucks down the drain irritates me. Was a great idea in theory.
Jose Younes,
Beautiful app
This app is insanely well put together. You’d think you’re using an app developed by Apple. The only thing I would love to see is all time stats and analytics, compiling all my runs and seeing a chart over time if I’ve improved or need improvement, on pace, speed, etc. all time averages etc. other than that so worth the buy, works flawlessly
LegionNate,
Does what it says it does. Nothing more, nothing less.
As an aspiring app developer this is what I would strive to make my apps be. No pointless social media plugins, no subscription-based nonsense. Just an app that has a small upfront cost but does what it says it will do.
Stuck2,
Inaccurate
I like the UI and very much appreciate this approach to privacy. I wish the results were more accurate however. I took a walk that Google Maps and some city literature say is 3.5 miles. I ran two trail apps: this and one other. This reported the length as over 5 miles. The other said it was about 4 miles. Both are way off. I guess that’s just an inevitable consequence of low resolution GPS sensors in phones. But this app was off a lot more than the other.
k2_360,
App terminates when switching off headphones
It seems like every now and then I will start to record a workout and at the end find the app is off did not record any data. (update: it seems to be an issue when using headphones and turning off music, terminates current workout). It would also be nice to have elevation gain and loss spelled out. Timeline only shows an estimate of distance. Looking for an update to change review.
