Description

Support Warning - EDDMaps is growing. To develop new and better maintain current features, we have consolidated our regional apps into one EDDMapS app. We will discontinue supporting Outsmart as of March 31, 2023 and ask for you to join us on our new platform. For any questions or concerns, email [email protected].

The Outsmart Invasive Species project is a collaboration between the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (MA DCR) and the Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health at the University of Georgia.

The goal of the project is to strengthen ongoing invasive-species monitoring efforts in Massachusetts by enlisting help from citizens. The web- and smartphone-based approach enables volunteers to identify and collect data on invasive species in their own time, with little or no hands-on training.

By taking advantage of the increasing number of people equipped with iPhone or digital camera/web technology, this approach will expand the scope of invasive-species monitoring, and is an effort to help control oubreaks of new or emergent invasive species that threaten our environment.

liker of the science,
Needs Better ID Photos
There's a tiny, barely identifiable photo, and when you select it, it goes to the info/record screen, but there is no better picture. I'll never be able to identify anything from the tiny thumbnail for a comparison with the subject if I can't tell what it looks like. It needs better identification confirmation to be of any use. I like the concept of it though so I'm going to give it high marks in hopes the "designers" will take it to actual designers in order to get a useable interface. Unless you already know what you're working with, this app is pointless to release to the average person for assistance.
PMac63,
Great resource
The only complaint is that there are missing descriptions of some of the plants and also one of the pests. The first plant listed is Gout Weed (which looks a lot like Queen Anne's Lace) which only has a picture without any info. I suspect you might get a lot of misidentified photos until the info is provided.
Waterwrat,
It DOES have larger pictures!
Mea culpa - the app does have large pictures of each invasive. After watching the cute video and wondering how the hiker got a large pic on her app, I played around with it more: if you tap the blue arrow on the side on each invasive it goes to a larger pic which you can zoom in on. Tapping to the left of the blue arrow brings up descriptive info and a way to report the find. Well done! And I noticed the same folks at the Center for Invasive Species at U of Georgia have additional apps. Check out the one for Florida, land of the invasives!
Kestre,
Bugs
I'm sorry but I can't use your app because the icon is an insect and the load screen is an insect. Then there's some menu picture of an insect. Creeps me out. Sorry. Just wanted to give you the feedback in case you make a bug free version. I just wanted it for the invasive plants... I'll get a friend without insect-phobia to download it to use instead of me!
Constantstaticxo,
Interesting but could be better
This should include places the species have been found so users know if a specific plant or insect has been known to be in their area. That would certainly make it easier to find species, so users know what to look for around them.
Amishmedia,
Awesome
Fun and easy to use!
kSiart,
App crashes
Whenever I try to click for the info on a species the app immediately crashes.
