Description

Save your photos from accidental — or deliberate! — deletion by toddlers, clients, or anyone that can't be trusted.

Peek-a-View is a read-only photo gallery. Using Peek-a-View, you can always feel safe sharing your photos with anyone, because there is literally no way to have Peek-a-View delete your photos. In fact, Peek-a-View does not write ANY data back to your photo library.

When paired with the Guided Access feature on iOS and iPadOS, you can lock your device into Peek-a-View, ensuring that the only thing that device can do is look at photos, until you decide otherwise.

By default, Peek-a-View will show your most recent photos in your photo gallery, but it can be configured to only show a specific album. Furthermore, access to Peek-a-View's settings is automatically restricted when Guided Access is started.

Peek-a-View will show you your 20 most recent photos for free; a one-time in-app purchase will remove that limitation.

Peek-a-View fully supports Dark Mode, Dynamic Type, Live Photos, videos, and animated GIFs. With purchase, it also supports several alternative icons.

Born from a trip to an amusement park with a very independent toddler, Peek-a-View was written so that my wife and I can give our phones to our precocious two-year-old and know that she won't accidentally delete any of our precious memories.

Without Peek-a-View, we'd have to hope that she didn't figure out how to delete anything, or spend time fiddling with the Guided Access settings to block out the delete features on the Photos app.

With Peek-a-View, we can simply open the app, start Guided Access, and hand her the phone. No deletion, no modifications, no worries.

Version history

2022.2
2022-08-02
Add a new instructive video to show how to make a shortcut to automatically start Guided Access. You can access this from Settings or from the second page of onboarding, for new users, from the second page of onboarding.
2022.1
2022-05-09
Some freshening up, mostly in Settings.
2020.11
2020-09-16
Supports new features in iOS, including limiting Peek-a-View to only being able to read some photos from your photo library.
2020.10
2020-08-25
- Fixes a bug wherein the navigation bar would appear after a rotation even if Guided Access was enabled
- Adds some logging for a very unusual crash that a user reported.
2020.9
2020-08-05
Fixes some wonkiness with rotation during on-boarding. Existing users won't see any difference, but new users will now see that the two onboarding screens are now locked to portrait.
2020.8
2020-04-24
- No longer over-zooms when zoom is disabled. (That was a weird one.)
- Swipe to dismiss works on the entire screen and not just the media being displayed
- Once a video is muted/unmuted, all videos respect that choice until you close the app
- No longer shows the speaker icon if there is no audio content in a video
- Threading & memory improvements
2020.7
2020-04-07
NEW FEATURES
- You can now more granularly choose where motion previews are shown.
- Shared iCloud Photo libraries are selectable again
(Okay that's not a new feature but it's an important fix!)

FIXES
- The "Restore Purchase" screen is no longer SwiftUI and so it... actually looks correct.
- Fixed a crash when you leave the folder browser when a custom album is turned on
- Fixes a misalignment of a spinner [that you should never see] for those of you on larger phones
- General crash mitigations
2020.6
2020-03-26
MAJOR CHANGES:

-- Custom Albums!
You can now create a completely custom album on-the-fly that is used only within Peek‑a‑View. Select the items from your Recents album that you'd like to include to quickly and easily limit Peek‑a‑View to showing only those photos. As with everything else in Peek‑a‑View, that album is *not* written back to Photos and is only used within Peek‑a‑View.

-- Folder Support!
Now, Peek‑a‑View recognizes folders you've created in the Photos app, and allows you find albums by drilling down in the folders you've created

BUG FIXES:
There have been several bugs fixed:

- Small photos shouldn't be briefly shown while the full-size version is rendering
- Improved rotation behavior when a single photo is displayed
- No longer shows previews of Live Photos when Reduce Motion is enabled
- Improvements to VoiceOver support
- Fixed a rare crash in the Settings screen
2020.5
2020-02-19
- PANNING AND ZOOMING OF PHOTOS, by popular request! This includes double-tap to zoom
- New icon selector that shows icon titles
- New unpaid icon selector instead of an alert
- Slightly reworked look of album list
- More intelligent re-fetching of photo album list
- More intelligent re-fetching of photos due to changes
- No longer shows an error message when the user cancels a purchase/restore
- Grid no longer shows if you swipe past the first/last item in the single-item view
- Changed the album shortcut on the grid view from long tap to long press [on the album name]
- Changed instances of "Ok" to "OK"
- Fix alignment quirk on Guided Access onboarding screen
- Fix a typo in the purchase screen
2020.4
2020-02-09
That "pew pew pew" sound you heard with the last version was me shooting from the hip. In an effort to make some things better, I made some things worse. Whoops.

In this version:
- Should no longer see offset images when swiping between images
- "Ok" got changed to "OK", OK?
- Some other minor copy changes
2020.3
2020-02-08
Some quick bug fixes:

- Photos are now shown in full resolution! My apologies for missing that one.
- Less sensitive swipe to dismiss
- Will play video audio even when phone is silenced; additionally, other audio is ducked rather than stopped
- Live Photos and GIFs will no longer animate in the grid view when the system's Reduce Motion is enabled
- Additionally, there is now a setting to turn off those same previews if you simply prefer it
- Dramatically decrease the delay when opening the album selection screen
- Add link in Settings to get more help with Guided Access
- Onboarding screens locked to portrait
- Adds some bottom padding to the purchase screen

pinkhillboy,
Perfect for controlling access to pictures and videos on your device
The app makes handing your phone over to another person to view photos much less fraught. While it is geared to allowing kids to play with pictures and videos in a controlled setting, it also works great with sharing a curated set of pictures with adults. It transforms your phone, in the best way possible, into a single use device: a picture (and video) frame.
sirmarcos,
Thumbnail cropping is odd.
The cropping on thumbnail seems strange, the thumbnails look odd and not anything like the actual photos. It seems worse on live photos; actually maybe it is only a live photo issue but since most photos I take on my iPhone and most are by default Live photos, most of my photos look really weirdly cropped in the thumbnail view.

The other thing that would be nice if we could select a person as an “album.” I don’t know if this is a limitation of the photo library API, but in Photos I can pick a name from face identification like of my wife or daughter. I would love to be able to just pick my daughters name and let her look at her own pictures.
jefe2000,
Best way for kids to browse the family photos
My family photo/video album is my iCloud Photo Library. Everything is in there, ever since the kids were born. So, when the kids ask to look at family photos, I hand them the iPad.

And, even though I turn on Guided Access each time I hand the iPad to them, it’s still nerve wracking for me to know they could be accidentally deleting swaths of precious photos and videos. Yikes!

So, Peek-a-View is exactly what I needed. It’s such a perfect way to let my kids get a view-only experience of the photos and videos they love. My nervousness about inadvertently deleted photos is gone! Absolutely worth the $5 purchase price.

Here’s a feature request: my kids are 5 and 8 years old and I understand out to stop and start video playback. Please allow me a way to tell Peek-a-View not to loop the video playback. My kiddos know how to start the video playing again if they want to see it a second (or third, or tenth) time.
Aichonette,
This is what I’ve been needing!
Oh my gosh, this is exactly what I’ve been needing! My husband told me about this app after hearing the developer talk about it on a podcast. This is perfect for our precocious and curious toddler who *loves* looking at picture and watching videos of herself. It’s a little buggy - has crashed a couple of times - but when Guided Access is enabled, it launches the app right back. Thank you for making this!!
MothMoat,
Good concept, execution needs work
I like the idea of a read-only photo gallery, but the initial version of Peek-a-View has several issues that make it painful. The photos are displayed at a low resolution. (It’s especially noticeable with screenshots, but affects all images.) The zoom behavior is strange: it always zooms to the center of the image no matter where I pinch, and after I release my fingers it zooms back out. I also had it crash several times in the few minutes I used it.

I look forward to these issues being fixed in future versions. As of now, I can’t see myself using this.
Aaron_M_L,
Instant buy
I've wanted something like this for a while. To me, it's like the equivalent of pulling photos of your family out of your wallet to show someone (instead of showing them every photo you've ever taken). This was an instant buy for me.

I was going to suggest adding a way to lock on a specific album, but then I realized it does this automatically with Guided Access. Great extra detail!
myganh,
Great for nosy coworkers
My coworkers enjoy seeing photos of my 4 month old. This lets me hand off my phone so they can oooo and ahhh without me having to babysit them or swipe for them. (It’s good for the grand parents too)

The interface change in guided access mode is a nice touch!

I would like it if this app let me make temporary albums to show people, rather than counting on the photos app for albums.
dgp1,
Finally fixed the bug where it couldn’t see albums
1. I’m a paid user
2. Couldn’t use the feature to pick a different album than Recent for years
3. Now it started working

Casey was very kind and apologetic when I reached out, but we had been unable to tell what was wrong. Now it’s working and I’m happy!
eventualbuddha,
Great idea!
My wife and I have definitely used the “show kids photos from our phones to keep them occupied” trick, and this makes it so they can’t accidentally delete my photos.

This version is early, obviously, but it’s off to a good start. A great additional feature would be choosing specific people to show instead of a specific album.
ColinC.,
Simply Amazing
No matter if your kid is 3 or 13 you probably don’t want them having write access to your photos (i.e. the Photos app). But kids of all ages always want to look through your photos. Until this app I’ve simply said no! Now I can happily hand them my $1,200 phone with no worries ...

No, but seriously, this is amazing piece of mind (with an old device).
