Phonics Advanced First Grade is a comprehensive, educational, low-cost app based on the Common Core Foundational Skills. It is written by teachers, for teachers, and can used in the classroom, integrating easily into lesson preparation. Parents can use the app to help a child keep up or catch up with their peers. The Check Yourself section will identify a student’s individual needs.
The Common Core Foundational Skills for 1st Grade includes:
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
a. Know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs.
b. Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.
c. Know final -e and common vowel team conventions for representing long vowel
sounds.
d. Use knowledge that every syllable must have a vowel sound to determine the number of syllables in a printed word.
e. Decode two-syllable words following basic patterns by breaking the words into syllables.
f. Read words with inflectional endings.
g. Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.
All of these skills are taught and practiced in the Phonics Advanced App. The check yourself section allows the parent or teacher to see the child’s progress on these skills.

No good
This app is not appropriate for first graders. I purchased this to help with inflectional endings. You cannot isolate an ending, but instead must be instructed on -s, -ing, and -ed. That is way too much for a first grader to take in. Plus on the second sample there is an irregular verb and the user is told “goed” is not a word. How confusing! It would be best to use only regular verbs at first to illustrate the concept. The controls for this section were also not intuitive. I was about to delete the app, but decided to try another section. This was on reading CVC words. There was a cute idea, to form your own words using the CVC pattern. Unfortunately there was no feedback on whether I had formed a real world. For example, I made “ron” and no feedback was given. The app should not allow wrong words to be formed in this exercise. In general the app is not thought out, moves too quickly for first graders, and seems homemade.

Will not work FROZE!
The game worked fine for a while, then said to update a few weeks ago & is just froze. It has shown to update for weeks, yet nothing happens. Have contacted them, but received NO REPLY. AVOID. WHATEVER YOU DO, don't waste $$ on it.

Awesome App!
Phonics Awareness is perfect for teaching advanced phonics skills! As a Second Grade Teacher, I LOVE how easily this app helps teach and reinforce specific concepts in a colorful, fun format! Because it’s aligned with the Common Core for Literacy, I feel great about using it in my classroom. Its easy to use and my students want to use this app again and again! The ‘check yourself part is a great pre/post test that enables me to see their progress. It also is a great teaching aid for non – readers, because the text amd directions are all read to them! Love this app!!

Very small amt of info in this app. My 5 year old just went thru the whole app in less than 2 minutes including he quiz, which is identical every time. Needs way more info and practice. I would not suggest this app even if it was free.

Phonics Advanced
As a Title I 1st grade teacher, this app has helped me teach struggling readers. I use lessons to introduce (or reteach) the phonics concepts, then individual students do the practice on their iPads, repeating the lesson.

Waste of money!
There is no sound, which made me the maddest. Description and graphics of app we're very misleading. Good thing it was only a dollar or I would be even more angry. Grrrrrrr....
