Description

The PlaneEnglish Aviation Radio Simulator (ARSim) is an interactive aviation radio simulator created to enable pilots to learn and master aviation radio communication and gain the confidence to overcome the fear and trepidation of talking to Air Traffic Control.

AI-based air traffic controllers and instantaneous feedback through voice recognition and speech analysis guide new pilots through realistic scenarios toward proficiency in aviation phraseology and communication.

Users can access more than 300 airports and step through over 200 lessons of interactions with air traffic control for all phases of VFR and IFR flight and follow the built-in training curriculum to master this critical aviation skill. By completing the VFR and IFR TRAINER modes users can claim up to four (4) FAA WINGS Credits.

The AIRPORT, PATTERN, and HOLD modules provide foundational knowledge on airport signs, markings, and lighting, on how to fly and communicate while flying a pattern / circuit, and on the basics of instrument holds. The touch-based and voice-based interactive capabilities of ARSim make every lesson engaging and informative, to help pilots gain new knowledge and to sharpen and refresh their existing skills.

Guided by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) phraseology, standards, and radiotelephony procedures, the training content offers users the ability to experience the aviation communication standards used across the world.

New pilots can gain critical safety skills in an accessible and effective way and build critical muscle memory thereby expanding the learning opportunities...beyond the classroom and outside of the cockpit.

You will be able explore and to try out the full functionality of ARSim with the always-available free content and the free trial period. Don't forget to look around in Settings for the many customization options, phraseology standards, and primary flight displays.

123 is easy as abc,
GOOD but not GREAT
Look this app is a great tool I wish I had while learning private/instrument coms. The problem is, some things you do not read back to atc in flight are required to read back here which could give the impression to new pilots that you have to read back every piece of detail to atc.

An example of this is “hold short 28L landing traffic” you generally don’t say “landing traffic” back to ATC. Another example is when contacting departure, generally you don’t say “contact PHX departure” you would say “ over to departure, good day”

Overall this app is great for new pilots which is why I rated it 4/5 stars, but you should not just rely on the app for your atc communications. Once you become more familiar with talking on the radio with atc, you will begin to use your own phraseology to shorten what you have to say without compromising the message. But in general good app!

Must Have for Student Pilots
This app is so so so helpful with practicing your radio calls. I used to get so nervous about messing up or saying something silly to tower or on CTAF. It provides great practice for keeping all the numbers and instructions straight in your head without the fear of embarrassment/ judgment from ATC or other pilots! It’s great for when your bored laying in bed, preparing for a check-ride, or you can elevate your chair flying with this extra level of immersion. Either way, you won’t regret it.

It is a little pricey for what it is.. but then again what isn’t in aviation? It’s a monthly payment but I think it’s worth every penny, since you’re able to practice radio calls anywhere, anytime and not while you’re paying over $175/hr for your flight training! Plus you can just use it until you get comfortable and proficient! Definitely recommend it to anyone at any level of flight training!
CreationTattoo,
Okay okay… let me clarify
So, to be fair, at first I thought this app wasn’t working properly. I have been a licensed pilot for 5 years now and almost have my CFI. I couldn’t get it to work, even when I gave proper calls, etc.. it was saying I wasn’t saying / making correct calls.. then I realized it’s because I’m bloody British and it couldn’t understand my accent or some of the phraseology that we use that Americans don’t. I currently live and fly in the US, but this App hates my accent. Lol. It can’t understand me unless I speak really slow and American… well, as good as an attempt of American accent as I can do. Lol. I initially gave it 1 star because I thought the app was flawed and not proper for learning, but I can now see how it’s honestly highly functional and ideal for anyone who wants to sharpen up with coms. I will be referring it the students at my airport. Cheers!

BRONCOS ( my callsign ),
Amazing app worth every single penny!
I am a student pilot who has a fear of messing up a transmission on the radio in front of way more experienced pilots. This app has helped me already in the 24 hours I’ve had it to gain confidence and to learn and receive feedback to perfect my ATC read back skills. I’ve already purchased a subscription and am enjoying the app a TON! If you or anyone you know is struggling over radio or wants to get a head start before taking comms for the first time I highly suggest to try out this app. This app is perfect for anyone wherever they may be in their aviation path as it helps keep your skills sharp. In the end, this purchase was money well spent and I now can’t wait to get up in the air and start doing some talking with the knowledge and confidence this app has given me! Thank you to the staff and developers for making such an amazing tool for all pilots!

Good, but could be better
It’s an interesting idea. And definitely one of the things I’ve seen a lot of my students struggle with, not to mention myself have problems with is radio interaction and conversations using correct ATC phraseology. Here’s the problem: The communications that this app demands of the user there’s almost no resemblance to what goes on during real world ATC interactions. Yes you got the order and sequence of these things right, but the app punishes you for things you would say in the real world. Eg reporting having ATIS info D in a clearance the app wants you to spell out “with Information Delta”. In the real world you’re just going to simply say “with Delta” and the controller knows exactly what you’re talking about. The more complex Clearance practice is almost useless without available taxi charts, departure procedures, STARs, etc. readily available and reviewed prior to commenting the flight. All in all it’s a neat idea, but it’s still an embryonic stage and needs a lot of improvement.
Ninja P.,
Great App (Just some Suggestions)
I must say this is a great app and I have learned so much in the past 5 hours of using it. I now know so much vocabulary and how to use it in the real situation. I like how the ATC will also respond to you as well so it like real life. I do have some suggestions though. I feel like for the scenarios, they should be gone through fully until takeoff happens. This is just so your used to getting that whole sequence of events done. Obviously they are gone through in other scenarios but why make it two different scenarios and make you pay for the other one while one is free? I feel like there should be a bit more free things. The app is amazing though and I have learned so much. I hope to come back soon and edit this review so it can be more detailed then 5 hours :)
4PlayKolohe,
Great for student pilots
I’m 10 hours into my PPL training and I find that I struggle on reading back approaches and pattern entry in my class D airspace. My flying skills show that I’m ready to solo, but I need to improve my radio communication in the pattern before I can fly without my CFI. This app has been super helpful even though there are some things where it’s not too exact. In my training airport (Class D), I would report back to ATC on pattern entry “Tower, Cessna 123AB, 4 miles right midfield downwind 36” but in this app you have to read back as “Tower, Cessna 123AB, 4 miles right midfield runway 36” and I keep saying downwind or forget to say runway so I get points taken off for accuracy. It’s a great app to get the concept so that’s why I continue to use it and it’s helped a ton.

Impressed with Plane English
I downloaded this app because I wanted to learn about proper radio communications in regards to flying. I started off with the “basics” and started to play with some “fly” simulators which take you step by step from the terminal at one airport to the terminal of the destination airport.
It’s great to have something I can use when I have some spare time. Instead of scrolling aimlessly through instagram or Facebook, you can invest some time into refining your radiotelephony skills.
I’ve had the app for a couple weeks now and I can see my skills improving.
One of the main reasons I wanted to use this app was because I didn’t want to be learning radio comms WHILE I was learning to fly a plane. That way I could focus totally on the flying part and have the radio comms part come second nature. Flight training is expensive so what learn something in a plane with fuel burning and an instructor on the clock when you can learn it at home or while you’re on a trip.
Highly recommend this app if you’re new to flying.

I also reached out to the team about a bug and they were quick to respond and fix the issue. That’s important for any app.
5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
DealzYo,
Great
I can’t speak to the accuracy of what you actually need to read back in real life vs in the app, as another reviewer mentioned. I’m too early in my aviation journey to know those specifics. I know enough about flying and radio transmissions to say is that this is an awesome tool, and there doesn’t seem to be anything else out there like it. It seems like the typical approach to aviation radio is to just jump in and figure it out. I’d much rather get some preparation before hand and this app is doing that very well. If working out a couple procedural kinks is the biggest adjustment I’ll have to make when conversing with ATC then I’ll be happy.
Essseeseseshhdhd,
Disappointing
Honestly expected much more from this app, besides the shady micro transactions needed to make any real progress on the app, there’s much left to be desired. I got this app to practice repeating tower instructions only to find out I can’t even do that. Scenarios are very limited and the apps algorithm makes it so you always pass just as long as you say the information doesn’t matter the order whatsoever nor how long the radio call takes. You could say utter nonsense and as long as the key words are there you get a perfect score. I’m hesitant to even give this app three stars but it really does have potential although sadly I feel the creators don’t have plans on making it into the app it could be. Unless your just starting flying with no radio experience whatsoever this app will not help you.
