spidermother,
The best I’ve tried
I tried everything to try to get myself out of restaurants and in the kitchen without wasting time or money. I tried meal planners like emeals which is nice but locks you into their schedule and doesn’t account for previously purchased bulk items and I didn’t always love their recipes. Other meal planning apps are specific to a food philosophy. PlateJoy is adaptable and you can change what type of plan to follow anytime.

I’ve also tried meal kit delivery like Blue Apron, Purple Carrot, Sun Basket, and Hello Fresh. Delivery was always a giant hassle and I felt like I was contributing to a lot of waste. Also you never got to develop a spice rack or bulk items just being sent sesame oil and vinegar by the tablespoon. It just felt expensive for a lot of work.

This is the app you want. If you buy olive oil and yellow onions and carrots and a big tub of oatmeal you’ll get recipes next week to use these again. It’s brilliant. And I finally have a kitchen full of food, enough for various recipes, on my own shopping schedule, with limited waste and not being locked into a food style. This is better than I could have hoped for. Worth the yearly fee for sure.
26 M,
Almost my favorite app
I first used this app two years ago and back then somehow you had more options for recipes and dietary restrictions. I dont even understand how the app lost features since Ive came back to it. So thats my first concern. Secondly I think this app is really misunderstanding their best market. Instead of focusing entirely on martha stewart moms who already know how to cook and what to buy at the grocery store they should start catering to college kids and bachelors that dont know what they’re doing. Because this app is GREAT for us. I just moved and one of the recipes calls for black pepper. I dont have it bc i just moved and it wasnt in the shopping list. You can say that I probably should and youre right, but this is what I use the app for. You also should probably alwyas have cooking oil in your home but they remind you to buy that.

maybe its just bc im a young bachelor with an allergy but I wish the app focused more on that (especially when it comes to cheaper meals) bc we have way more to gain from this app then a suburban mom thats been cooking every day for 10-15 years already.

With all that being said the idea behind this is amazing and makes me life A LOT easier.
HappyHealthyMomma,
Love It!
My husband and I have been using this app for over a year now. It has helped us to eat healthier, and makes meal planning super easy. I love the grocery checklist that I can use from my phone while shopping. I also really love the options for amount of meals you want to make, the ability to note foods that you do not want to eat/cook with, and the dietary options (weight loss, keto, paleo, etc). We recently started the 30 Day Cleanse program, based off the Whole 30, and I am so happy with the meals and the weight loss. We are 23 days in, and I have lost 9 lbs, and my husband has lost 17 lbs. I love learning new recipes and preparing foods in ways I never would have before. But my favorite thing about this app is that I never have to stress about “What’s for Dinner”. 😀

There is always room for improvement, though. The prep time always seems a bit unrealistic, so be sure to add at least 10 extra minutes to that. I also wish that there would be some sort of star or other identifying character for recipes that require prepping things ahead of time (like freezing something overnight).

Best meal planning service
I have been using platejoy for almost three years now. It is the most amazing help I could get to have healthy food everyday. No more endless research and planning the meals of the week. Recipes are overall easy to make and delicious. What’s more you can choose how much time you have to cook. Sometimes it might take more time than they say, but instructions are so well done to maximize efficiency in the cooking process. They have a very impressive number of diet options and it is very simple to take out any ingredient you do not want. Also I prefer a service such as platejoy that plans your meal and shopping list than services that send you a package of food to be made because they produce so much trash with all the packaging. I got so many benefits for my health using platejoy: controlled my acid reflux, lost weight (without dieting) and kept myself healthy during pregnancy. Also, I’ve learned so much about cooking and discovered so many new ingredients! I recommend it for everyone of my friends, but be prepared to cook a lot!:-)
Kelsey Laughland,
Changed my life
This app has helped me eat healthier, limit food waste (no more throwing out vegetables I had every intention of eating), and order out only when I want to, not because I don’t have food in the house.

A few things to make it better: the export to Instacart is like checking someone’s homework, watching for quantity, quality, and type of food that is selected. I normally just start from scratch and make the shopping list myself. The preparation times are optimistic and will normally take time and a half/twice as long to prepare as stated. And finally, you have to check all your recipes for “optional” ingredients because they won’t export on the shopping list. Otherwise, you were looking forward to that yogurt and granola breakfast that looked so good in the picture and realize granola was not on your shopping list later because it’s an optional ingredient. I would suggest making an Optional tab just like there are tabs for Dairy, Bulk Bins, etc.

But these suggestions just go to show how much I’m using the app and how much it’s integrated into my life. I rave about this app to my friends and family all the time!
carahcounts,
Best app for meal planning
I can’t speak highly enough of Platejoy! It makes meal planning so easy. From the very beginning, you get to fill out a super detailed questionnaire with your preferences, foods you avoid, etc. then when you make your plans it focuses on staying within your diet plan as well as minimize food waste by using ingredients across multiple meals. Plus, you get an easy to follow grocery list once you’ve made your meal plan.

On top of the convenience and experience of the planner, the actual built in recipes are delicious and simple. There’s a common misconception that good, healthy food has to be complex and technical...but over the last 2 years we have learned that is simply not true. My bf and I are much more confident in the kitchen thanks to Platejoy.

In summary: I recommend this app to everyone I talk to. (Seriously, I get compliments on my leftovers in the break room every day at work lol and many of my coworkers have jumped on the PJ bandwagon!)
One Drive SPU,
The App I’ve Been Waiting For
I used to spend hours meal planning for the week. Scrolling on Pinterest never knowing if any of the ingredients would overlap until too late, never knowing whether my choices were good for me. Plate joy has solved all my meal prep problems - and has let me hold on to the one thing I do love, going to the grocery store and picking out my own produce/meats/etc. Before platejoy all of the meal planing was in my head, so my husband rarely helped grocery shop or cook the intended meal. If I didn’t do it, we would go out to eat and that’s where food can become an expensive monthly expense. Plate joy allows us both to know what the shopping list is, and then know the ingredients in our fridge. The checklist at the grocery store is clutch and helps us both divide and conquer. I come home now and he is already in the kitchen!

The meals are great and so much variety! Exceptional user experience.

I am so grateful for this app.
tashhi,
It is more than just a meal planner
I love this app and I’m very surprised it is not more popular. Not only does it reduce food waste but it has caused me to eat healthier, stick to a meal plan stress-free, and I’ve enjoyed trying new things. Some of the recipes I have been super hesitant with but there has not been a single miss. There’s some recipes I probably won’t make again but those are far and few. The majority of these recipes are incredible and I’m so glad I’ve expanded my culinary repertoire. I highly recommend this app and I would recommend actually going with the weekly suggested recipes – you will pleasantly surprised! My ONLY qualm is that some of the recipes (and subsequent shopping lists) are not in full or normal quantities so you’ll be shopping for 7 oz of spinach instead of the typical 5 or 16 oz boxes. I usually make do by using extra in a recipe or by using less.
mrsp0tter,
Awesome
I’ve been using PlateJoy for about 6 months and I love it. I found it while looking for an alternative to the subscription meal services. As a single person I’ve always struggled with making meals for one that didn’t involve eating the same leftovers for the next week. PlateJoy makes it so easy to plan! I love that they select recipes that utilize leftover ingredients from other recipes so that you don’t have a bunch of excess food sitting around and going bad. There are a ton of personalized meal plans you can choose based on your dietary preferences and you can even exclude ingredients you don’t like/use. They keep tabs on your pantry that you update every week when creating your meal plan and provide you the grocery list for the week. It’s such a well executed service. I can’t say enough good things about it. Worth every penny!
La_bibliotecaria,
Working well so far!
I’ve been using plate joy for about six months and have really appreciated the planning service so far. I like how customizable the menus are, and that the recipes are printable. I have a few feature ideas that would make it better: provide a single page option with instructions for all the prep work for batch meals for those of us who like to make three of them at once and freeze them. This is would instruct me to, say, chop all the onions at once for all three batch meals. Also, provide a more compact grocery list. I like that it exports to instacart but I prefer the local service at my Texas grocery chain (they’re just better at selecting produce than instacart) so I spend a lot of time each week navigating between two screens on my phone to recreate the grocery list in my store cart.
