Description

Help shape the first large-scale, long-term health study of LGBTQ people!

The PRIDE Study app allows members of the LGBTQ community to inform and influence what aspects of our health will be studied in the upcoming PRIDE Study.

The PRIDE Study is a long-term collaboration that will help health professionals make informed decisions about our health. Learn more below.

WHO'S ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PRIDE STUDY?

You are eligible to join the PRIDE Study if you are:

• 18 years of age or older
• A resident of the United States
• Comfortable reading and writing on your iPhone in English
• LGBTQ or another sexual or gender minority

This app is designed for research and education purposes only. This app is not meant to provide medical advice, attention, or treatment. If you are having a medical emergency, call or contact your healthcare provider.

WHAT IS THE PRIDE STUDY?

The PRIDE Study is the first large-scale, long-term health study of people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ), or another sexual or gender minority.

By participating in The PRIDE Study over time, your unique story teaches us about the health and wellbeing of LGBTQ people like you.

WHO IS CONDUCTING THE PRIDE STUDY?

The PRIDE Study is being conducted by doctors and research scientists at The University of California, San Francisco.

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE PRIDE STUDY?

The mission of The PRIDE Study is to improve the health of LGBTQ people. To meet this goal, we need to understand how being LGBTQ affects your health. The PRIDE Study deeply explores how the experience of being LGBTQ is related to all aspects of health and life. We study the unique health care disparities, strengths, and resiliencies of our communities. We share our findings through a variety of methods to impact LGBTQ communities and health professionals.

HOW IS MY INFORMATION KEPT SAFE?

As doctors and research scientists, we understand that information about your life and health is personal. Like our patients’ health information, it is our priority to keep the information you share private and secure. All communications between you and our app are secure electronic transmission, and our data are physically secure. All our systems meet the requirements defined by federal law (United States Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act or HIPAA).

HOW IS MY INFORMATION SHARED?

Your participation in The PRIDE Study is wasted if we don’t share the results with the people and organizations that can make real change for LGBTQ health. Results from The PRIDE Study will be shared directly with you, healthcare professionals, policy makers, and community organization. We will never share individual information; only aggregated (grouped) data will be shared.

Yuzza306,
Don't download if...
You're impatient, then this app is not for you. I've had this app for what's going on three weeks now, and a survey has not appeared. The people who have made the app have posted in the community section ONCE, and the traffic has dramatically died down.
They've promised us surveys over a week ago, and none have yet to appear. Of course I'm growing impatient myself, but I'm still holding on to see what's going to happen next... All in all, I am becoming annoyed that nothing has appeared on my dashboard or I haven't been informed as to why it's taking these people so long to roll out interactive surveys and questionnaires. Unless you like to have apps on your phone that take up space and collect dust, then this is definitely the app for you!
Silent Crusader,
Nothing new
There's been nothing new for the past 8 months in terms of surveys from the UCSF Pride Study. Was the project shelved, abandoned or did not receive any funding to continue? I would like to know.
QuirkyCarter,
Unprofessional Study = Misleading Data
I really wanted this study to be a positive experience because we really need good data about adult LGBTQ health needs. We really need good data about teen/child LGBTQ health needs too, but this study was specifically about adults.

However, I am sad to say that I ended up deleting this app after giving it several chances – I just don't believe anything helpful will come of what is essentially a social message board.

Last time I checked, 25% of participants admitted to being under age 18, yet for some reason they were still allowed to participate. The study is only for people ages 18 and up, so this alone should be cause for concern in terms of gathering valid data from a specific demographic.

Additionally, a large portion of the topics were not about health at all – they were social topics. And while those are completely valid topics, they are not valid in the context of a study about health. When researchers do not limit the type of data they collect, everything becomes muddied. The end result was more like Reddit and less like a respectable study.

I'm sorry to say that I hope the data collected from this doesn't see the light of day because we need accurate information, not the product of a social chat room with no demographic control.
FlyingStrand,
Easy to use and great to be able to contribute to our communities health needs!
I love that somebody finally understands the need for specific LGBTQ health needs! This app is easy to contribute my health data that will hopefully improve my health in the future & extend it as I get older. Plus it will help countless others in the future! While the range of topics listed is still relatively small, it will only get better as more contribute. I've already found topics that I didn't even think to discuss with my physician! Luckily for me, I already have a gay doctor but I can imagine how hard it is to discuss some of these topics if you don't. This app is great for starting that conversation. Thank you!
cdkii,
Yay for Research.
I'm happy to participate in the study and hope some useful information can come from it.

The app is very well made with one exception: It uses background GPS and it’s draining my battery like non-other. I used the app for about 10 minutes yesterday and none today and yet my iPhone settings says it’s accounted for 19% of my battery usage in the past 24 hours. Please use the less power-hungry method of tracking location (they do exist).

Also, I'm kind of confused why straight people are upset they can't be part of a study specifically focusing on the studying the health needs of the LGBTQ community. As for the religious review, 'le sigh.'
dawn22121,
Brilliant idea for research platform!
The posts are meant to be about what topics we want to see researched about the LGBTQIA+ community. They are wanting to see what we want answers to, in order to conduct further research. It doesn't have to be health related, but about any aspect that relates to people in the community. It is a psychological/sociological research study, and so that is why they have opened the door to collect demographic research as well as to see what issues are impacting our community the most! A brilliant idea to use an app to collect data rather than just a survey. I can't wait to eventually see the finished product of their research!
FLJohn,
😕 get to the point and purpose quicker
Downloaded the app after learning about it on NPR. I am a 24 year old college graduate on my 30 min break from work... Honestly two attempts too long to get going, answered some question wrong about the purpose of the survey twice. The app should just say the survey is completely voluntary and be direct and ask what questions you need answered that I already know, Otherwise it's wasting my time. Maybe others will have the patience for this. Hearts in the right place but too much non essentials in the intro.
nononononononobye,
Poorly designed and not inclusive
First of all, this app is very poorly designed. The entire survey is around the discussion spaces but you have to go through the login process every time you try to get through the login process every 2 minutes in order to see the discussion boards. The discussion boards are also very poorly organized- it's impossible to see who replied to your comments or threads without getting an email and even harder to simply find the comments after voting on them.
Second of all, this app is not very inclusive of bi/pan/polysexual people or trans people (especially nonbinary people), even though those are the two groups the study claimed to want to focus on.
I really wanted to help this study but I don't think I will until this app is fixed and is no longer in beta mode.
Shanmru,
A few issues
I'm excited to participate in this study, but have experienced a few issues. First, I had to take the test multiple times to pass it. A few of the questions are NOT covered in the introduction material. Also, I find it lags A LOT, particularly when trying to access the community section. It was difficult to type when the letters didn't appear on the screen for several seconds afterwards.

That being set, this is a great idea. We are woefully underrepresented in research.
Kar04e,
No issues so far
I don't see the benefit yet so I can't give it 5, however it was easy to set up and if I'm helping any LGBT youth out there by giving my opinions and information then I'm glad to do it. The heterosexuals complaining about this app discriminating is totally bogus. This is a study of a minority group anyway, but there are straight people who've signed up as it's indicated in the percentage in the app.
