Description

Make the perfect start when sailboat racing, using this ISAF compliant countdown timer with sync function.
The default countdown timer is the 5 minutes start sequence (ISAF 5.4.1.0), but you can change the sequence easily just by changing the countdown time to 4, 3, 2 or 1 minute.

During the countdown to the start signal, alert beeps are played on the Apple Watch each minute & ‘taps on your wrist’ inform you how much time is left until the start signal (be sure to keep your screen on!)

Did you miss the initial warning signal by a couple of seconds ? No problem: just use the sync function at the next warning signal and the countdown timer will synchronise with the racing committee timer. The sync function is always 'sync down' - even if you were a full minute 'late', you can sync at the next signal with a press on the sync button.

Are you not sure how many minutes you are from the start signal ? Just check if the flags on the racing committee boat are corresponding with the flags on your screen.

It is not necessary that your Apple Watch is connected to your iPhone: the app runs natively on Apple Watch.

Regatta Timer Watch is integrated with the native Apple ‘Health’ & ‘Activity’ apps: your entire sailing time is saved as a ‘sailing workout session’ and will contribute to your activity goals (requires that you authorize the app to collect Health/Workout data).

Although Regatta Timer Watch is optimised for Apple Watch, you can also use it with only an iPhone: Apple Watch is optional.

Happy Sailing !

--------
Pro-Tips:

* By default, your Apple Watch screen will dim after 15 seconds, but you can increase the wake time to 70 seconds when tapping on the screen: adjust this in the settings of your Apple Watch (Settings > General > Wake Screen > On Tap > Wake for 70 seconds). Keep your screen alive by tapping it - or raising your wrist.

* When using Regatta Timer Watch for the first time on your Apple Watch, you will be prompted to authorize the app to collect Health/Workout data. You do this by opening Regatta Timer on your iPhone and allowing Regatta Timer to collect health/fitness data in the popup screen ("Allow all"). By allowing this, your entire sailing time - as long as the timer is running - will then be saved as a ‘sailing workout session’ that contributes to your activity goals. The 'sailing workout sessions' are logged in the Apple Watch native Activity app.

Version history

4.0
2017-09-28
This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

Update for iOS 11 / watchOS 4
Regatta Timer Watch takes advantage of the improvements in watchOS 4: in countdown mode, Regatta Timer Watch now keeps playing beeps & haptics each minute (and each ten seconds in the final minute), even when the screen is dimmed (requires watchOS4).
3.0
2016-09-13
Support for new watchOS 3 features:

1. Background beeps & haptics: Regatta timer watch now will continue to produce beeps & haptics when the app runs in the background e.g. when the screen is dimmed.
That means that you know how many minutes/seconds are left until the start, without having to look at your watch!

2. Workout sessions that remain active in the background
Starting a start sequence is logged as a sailing workout session. In watchOS 3 that means that your app is kept active in the background: when your watch wakes, regatta timer is immediately shown - and even when your screen dims, Regatta Timer Watch remains active, e.g. through beeps & haptics.
2.0.1

Regatta Timer can now be installed on iPhone 5.
2.0
2015-09-26
Regatta Timer for Apple Watch has been updated to watchOS 2 and now has far more capabilities:

* the app now runs standalone on Apple Watch - no need to be connected to your iPhone
* the app now runs natively & entirely on your Apple Watch, resulting in a better performance: it loads more quickly & responds faster.
* the app now has support for sound & Taptic Engine (vibrations) on Apple Watch: alert beeps are played on Apple Watch & ‘taps on your wrist’ inform you how much time is left until the start signal (be sure to keep your screen on!)
* the app now stays in the foreground, without having to alter your settings: during the start procedure, you just have to raise your wrist and Regatta Timer for Apple Watch will be on the screen (requires that you authorize the app to collect Health/Workout data)
* Integration with the native Apple ‘Health’ & ‘Activity’ apps: your entire sailing time is now saved as a ‘sailing workout session’ and will contribute to your activity goals.
1.2

* Syncing is now always 'sync-down' to the next full minute (several users requested to remove the 'sync up')
* Beeps on the iPhone are now played also when only the Apple Watch app is active: you can now leave your iPhone in your pocket - just make sure to keep your Apple Watch awake.
* Fixed a bug with the count-up timer (no resets when the Apple Watch awakes)
* Other small bug fixes...

loki-247,
Fair Regatta timer with potential
Wish I could say I like this app. I use it regularly because it’s the only Apple Watch regatta time I’ve found…
Pros:
-It counts down…
-You can change the number of count down minutes
-you can sync down by minute

But, I think this is very basic.

Cons:
-The app kicks you back to the your watch Home Screen when you tap the Stop button. Very frustrating after a general recall and you find you need to restart your app while maneuvering through the fleet to back to the start line…
-lag time from when you raise you watch to look at the time and when the app “updates”.

Missing:
-lock mode? I find on occasion I’ve inadvertently touched my watch face and the app is closed…
-rolling start
-count down to a specified time (pursuit racing).
In a nut shell: it works but lacks some very basic features.
March 01,
Ok as a back-up
Many things I like about app. Like the display of signal flags. Like ability to sync. On iPhones it is fairly simple. More complicated on Apple Watch. It only does count-down-count-up. Would like to see count-down-repeat (we do rolling starts, multi-fleets). Needs beeps for last five seconds of each minute. This gives a better chance to sync at even minutes. Jury still out, still learning to use app. Ok as a back-up. Three stars. Will re-evaluate at a later date. October 2018.
Emaqua,
Really good. ALMOST fantastic.
Developer Suggestion: Please update to fix the following issue with 3 min starts.

In preparation for the first (3min) signal, I sync down to 3min and press start when the horn sounds. But if I sync down to 3min, and then lower my arm or the screen times out, when i raise my arm and wake the screen again the timer has reset to 5. Please make my chosen time stick even if the screen turns off before I hit start.

Otherwise love it. Haptics are great. Would just love that 3 min fix.
NTIESQ,
Should save the time after a reset, make the buttons bigger
I coach high school sailing and we do two or three minute starts. I also sail large boats with five minute sequences. It’s very frustrating to have to change back to 2-3 min after every start.

Also, if you’re not going to make a force touch action do something, disable it. It’s very hard to hit start accurately when it’s so easy to activate force touch.

Finally I am often using touchscreen capable gloves which work but the buttons are really small and very easy to miss when trying to start a sequence.

Great start, with minor improvements it could be exceptional.
HumanPowered,
Good but...really tough to start timer
Simple regatta start timer. Needs bigger buttons on screen, actually starting the timer I find really hard. Especially as you might have slightly damp hands juggling tilers, lines and sail controls. Once it’s going no problem, very good. Haptics are great. Alarm perfect.
Jack2937&$3,
Unusable on Apple Watch!
Was ready for the starting sequence and hit the start button but the App would not start the countdown timer. Tried multiple times, soft push hard push long push. Just would not start. Unusable during a race! Tried again after the race, still had a hard time to get it to start!
Moreleeway,
Flakey
1. Rests to your default time each time your app goes to sleep.
2. Randomly Crashes.
3. Always asks you for your health data.
Leatherneck1975,
Terrible
If you only want to countdown in whole minutes starting from 5 to 1, this is your app. Otherwise, it's a waste of money.
Bryan McDonald,
Awesome app
This app is great. Flexible for both 5 or 3 min standard sequences (or 4, 2, or 1 min if you want).

Sync feature is very powerful when racing. Part of advanced sailing timers.

I've used my watch in up to 40mph of breeze on a windsurfer and it works perfectly.

I don't think the other reviewer is a sailor, hence the very poor review :)
Vhytdc,
Works as advertised in 2.0
Just used it. Works like a charm.
