BACKED BY SCIENCE

Dr. David Spiegel, Associate Chair of Psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine, is a psychiatrist who has taught more than 7,000 people how to better manage their minds and bodies using hypnosis. David is also Reveri's Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer, bringing more than 45 years of clinical and research experience studying stress, pain, sleep, and hypnosis. He has written thirteen books, 404 scientific journal articles, and 170 book chapters. He was educated at Harvard and Yale and now teaches at Stanford. He created Reveri so that you can tap his expertise, change your mind and mind your body.

CHANGE YOUR MIND

Use your mind to better control your body. Reveri's focused self-hypnosis sessions cover a range of challenges like insomnia, stress, focus, pain perception, eating habits, and quitting smoking.

WHAT IS SELF-HYPNOSIS?

In plain terms, self-hypnosis is just a naturally occurring state of highly focused attention.

Have you ever gotten so caught up in a good movie or a play or a novel that you think you're in the fictional world and forget about the world around you?

That's what self-hypnosis is like.

When you use a telephoto lens or pinch to zoom way in on a picture on your phone - you get to see incredible detail of a very specific area, but you become less aware of the surrounding context.

That's what self-hypnosis is like.

Many people fear that hypnosis is a loss of control. In reality, hypnosis is a means of increasing your control over your mind and body. Our minds are powerful tools, and most of us can learn how to use them more effectively. Hypnosis gives us a pathway to alter the relationship between mind and body.

tahera nilufar,
Skeptic to Fan - Reveri changed my belief in hypnosis
I though giving hypnosis a try after learning about Reveri in Huberman Lab podcast. I used to think hypnosis was just a pseudo science . Wasn’t very enthusiastic. But after doing the track for quitting smoking I found my cigarettes consumption dropped from 20 to 10 . I have tried mindfulness based habit change approach before for quitting but it was taking too long .
I applied for Reveri for Good as I live in the developing world and currently unemployed. Now I am using it for many things . One track I use regularly is the Be Present . It brings me to the present moment and in a positive state of mind better than meditation. I suffer from depression so it’s a great addition to my day .
Thank you all in the Reveri team.
Eduardo Gilmore,
Might work, but too expensive for what it is.
At first I found the app (specifically within the exercises) to be kind of confusing, or the pace to be off-putting. I think you have to do each one a few times because the directions are not always clear or consistent the first time through, and you can find yourself getting pulled out of it, which seems detrimental to the goal. I upgraded my rating to 3 stars from 2, because after you get the hang of it, it might be helpful. It was somewhat relaxing, but whether it’s more effective than just taking 5 minutes to meditate I’m not sure. I’m on the free trial and haven’t noticed much difference in admittedly little time. Frankly, I don’t want to pay what they’re asking for something that may not work for me, especially because there isn’t much there, and the app isn’t very prescriptive. There seems to be 1 unique short audio clip for a given problem you’d like to address, and then a bunch of shorter (many 1 minute) more generic ones. Perhaps if you are really good at self hypnosis, you can get yourself into the hypnotic state for a 1 minute clip to do something for you, but I just don’t believe that would work for me, and I’m not willing to pay to find out. Hopefully this app works for some people.
Katyden085,
Some toxic diet culture messaging in here..
It’s not a bad app, but there are some sentences that I find problematic and distracts me from being able to really drop in to the self hypnosis mode that would be most beneficial. For example, he says (paraphrasing here) “Learn to eat like a gourmet. Enjoy eating more while eating less. Most gourmets are average or even *under weight*.” Excuse me, I’m not trying to be under weight and I don’t think it’s wise to encourage people to be under weight. This is harmful messaging, especially to someone susceptible to an eating disorder. He also says we should be eating low fat and low carb. Eating is not a one size fits all prescription and while he says “dieting doesn’t work, don’t diet” he then proceeds to tell you not to eat carbs and fat, which is stereotypical diet advice that we have seen fail time and time again. I do like the parts about respecting one’s body and treating it with care like you would a baby. There’s also just one self hypnosis session per modality (besides the 1 minute ones, which I don’t even count because those are completely useless) so it gets repetitive real quick. There is potential her to be a great app, but it’s not there yet.

Feels rushed, app unresponsive
I have used several guided hypnosis tapes over the years. This doesn’t seem more effective than the other ones, many of which are cost less to access. The guidance in this one is hurried. He’s like “Imagine this. Do you have it? Good.” and then goes on to the next instruction. It takes a little longer than that to get into the zone! Also I have consistently experienced the app to be unresponsive to the verbal cue “okay” when that is what is requested. It takes me out of the hypnosis every time. That doesn’t seem to happen with the “yes”/“no” cues. I can’t imagine my voice is less understandable when I say “okay”.
I wouldn’t pay for a long subscription. There aren’t enough hypnosis tracks, they are much too short, and they aren’t noticeably different from the good stuff on Insight Timer. Also kind of irritating that in plugging this app on some podcasts Dr. Huberman referred to the cost as nominal. I suppose on a Stanford neurologist’s salary it is, but the vast majority of people in this country make under 50k. “Nominal” is relative, and his salary os not relatable.
hellcat_13,
Could work…
…but I’m unwilling to pay to find out long term results. I heard about this app for sleep help on a podcast, where it was promoted as “free because our US tax dollars paid for the research.” I get that things change, but I was super bummed to see that it is now crazy expensive!! For example, I have an excellent mediation app I use that’s $5 a month— that just seems more reasonable to me. Anyways, I downloaded Reveri for a free week trial but a week isn’t really long enough to determine if it’s worth the investment.

One thing I can tell right away is that I wish it had more personalized options— for example, at the end of the sleep exercise I don’t want him to walk me through the 3 steps to end the hypnosis, I just want to fall asleep. Since the research is already paid for, there should at least be more customization options for such an expensive app… Maybe one day, they will come around with a free option!

Excellent customer service.
After listening to the Huberman Lab podcast, I wanted to give Reveri a try. I have recently started a business, so I don’t have a lot of extra money to spend. $99 for a year seemed like a lot of money to spend when I wasn’t sure how much it would help. The 1 week trial was good, but I felt like I needed more time to decide.

I saw the Reveri for Good program and applied. I was approved for a 1 year membership for $10. I did have some issues getting it set up, but Shanique gave me some excellent customer service, and I eventually got everything figured out.

I’m still not sure how hypnotizable I am, but the program still works well as a mindful meditation practice. Thanks Reveri!
rylee.swarant,
more effective than meditation
I’ve tried many different meditation apps to help me get back to sleep at night without much success until I found Reveri. I fall asleep within minutes and wake up feeling so refreshed after doing the sleep exercise. $15 a month seemed a bit steep, especially after having a comparably good version of the app for free, but the results are undeniable. Although I don’t use the other exercises, having so much content available at a fraction of the going rate of one hypnotherapy session (~$300), puts the extreme value of this app in context. Thankful to have found this app, highly recommend
theGardener65,
I am missing something? Too expensive!!
This is an expensive app and I’m curious why. But maybe I am missing a big chunk of it. Missed an important section (?). I am seeing several short (9 minutes or so) little exercises on different subjects and a few ONE minute exercises and I’m just not seeing what some reviewers are raving about. Did I neglect to dl most of this app? Am I missing a large, important part? What’s the deal? Are these little 9 minute exercises all there is? And what use are those one minute ‘exercises’. I am ready to be wowed but I’m not seeing it. Also the developers LOVE to reply that you can apply for aid if you are too poor to pay for this and they TOTALLY miss the point. The POINT is this is too expensive for what it offers. It’s not that people can’t afford it, it’s that people do not value it so highly. Get over yourselves!
dmsmd,
Helpful
I truly appreciate Dr. Spiegel sharing his passion and expertise. I originally gave the app low marks but as I have practiced his techniques more, I now understand how valuable the app is. In addition to using the resources on the app I find myself expanding the sessions with my own guidance and suggestions or just using the technique he teaches without guidance from the app at times. I do not particularly like the voice recognition and interaction, I find it distracting as is the rating system. However overall I think this is a very important app for mental health and well- being.
Christina_Day_2,
Great information delivered in a boring way
I listened to the Huberman Lab podcast episode that referenced this app. I so wanted to like it. I listened to a total of an hour of content before writing a review so I could confirm my opinion.

The narrator is so monotone and boring that I can’t take in the valuable content he is trying to deliver. His voice has no inflection or levels, and the audio quality isn’t great either. It sounds like you’re listening to a cassette tape from 40 years ago with a narrator who doesn’t seem interested in his own content.

If he hired someone to voice the content rather than doing it himself, the app would be far better. Not trying to put him down—this is just my feedback on this really important part of the app experience.
