Version history

3.2.6
2022-09-03
- Major updates to Google account authentication flows
- Fix a bug that made the checkin system unresponsive with certain partially-synced checkins
- Fix an issue that prevents the map from loading in some situations
3.2.3
2022-08-21
This is the first update to Rockd since 2019. It reworks and modernizes the foundations of the app to set the stage for future development. Most functionality is the same, but internal data handling and storage have been simplified to provide a more stable user experience.

- Many bugs with state management and navigation have been addressed
- Functionality on newer devices (e.g., camera support) have been fixed
- Apple ID login has been added

The map system has been substantially improved for speed and expressiveness:
- A virtual globe and 3D terrain have been added, allowing new ways to explore the world’s geology atop its landscape.
- The map now makes maximal use of screen space on small devices
- The cache system has been totally replaced by a quicker and more standard implementation.
- Map code is now shared with Macrostrat’s web interface (https://macrostrat.org/map), allowing the quality of both to be improved.

WARNING: Due to changes to the internal storage framework of the app, unsynced checkins saved on the device are not retained through this update. Photos and other raw material should remain accessible, and it is possible, though tedious, to reconstruct lost data if needed. Please contact us ([email protected]) if you are affected by this breaking change.

We thank Justin Janisch for his hard work to improve the app and are excited for many updates to come in the Version 3 series.

GoOutWithMe.com,
This is important for my reasrearch, but!
This is crucial to a research project I have going, and I need to look up hundreds of sites manually. Sometimes I need to leave to app to check an exact location in another app but when I come back, the app refreshes and I have to go zoom in to that location again. This is infuriating to deal with over and over and over again. There’s no reason the app needs to refresh and start over from the beginning like this. Please consider changing this, or at least provide a setting that I can flip on and off. Thanks for the otherwise great app.
ReverendQ,
Gets more amazing with each update
I downloaded this when it first came out, and while it was fun right out of the gates, it was pretty clunky with much room for improvement. Well, the developers have heard the feedback and consistently added new features and are always fixing small bugs to make this the best (and only) “geological social media” app available! Anyone from a casual rockhound to a geology student (which I was when I first started using it, now have my B.Sc.) to PhD researchers can use this, and every checkin added by users helps supplement the amazing amount of data already built into the app. I love the recent additions of paleomaps, the ability to click through to linked literature in professional journals, and the interaction with other rock nerds!

I look forward to whatever is coming next, but at the moment this app is top-notch and I struggle to recommend any new features or fixes.
PoliticsOfCarbon,
This lets amateur geologists have fun
I moved to an area whose geological history helped create earth and life as we now know it. I’ve spent a lot of time exploring and became a real amateur geologist. This app is perfect. First, it has convenient, high quality geological maps. I’ve tried other solutions, which are usually overlays in google earth or a hiking app. They’re pretty inconvenient and they don’t give you the detailed information Rockd does about different stratigraphic units and lithologies. The paleo maps are fun and help make sense of the landforms as you explore. The minerals reference is fun, especially because Rockd actually gives you the mineralogy of igneous rocks in the area.
TrumpetChris,
Love it—minor quirk makes it very difficult to use on iPhon 12 Pro
I love this app—I’m new but already noticed that on an iPhone 12 Pro the buttons on the top and bottom of the screen are obscured by the time (left) and service, WiFi and battery icons (top right) making it almost impossible to click the “back” or “submit” buttons. Is there a way to address this in a future update? This issue makes submitting observations very cumbersome. Thanks for reading this! -C

Pictures
Although it is linked with mindat . This app should put more focus on personallly uploading photos to locations as well as “common mineral” i feel as if “common minerals can look different depending on where your at , so getting a good idea of all the different forms the same mineral can have will be less confusing to the noobs …

And i can’t tell if “common minerals “ are generalized , or if they’re specific to the current ground structure I’m on when i look at my dashboard .
DinosaurBoy from Youtube,
Very good overall
This app is very good overall. It very detailed and up to date geological maps for the United States. But internationally, I think it could be improved. For example, in Mexico, the maps only give very vague information. The maps provided by the Mexican Geological Service, are much more accurate and give more information about the geology of Mexico.
MIflyer,
Awesome app!
If I could give it 10 stars I would. Sure the app has some annoyances (outweighed by useful features) but what I really like is the social platform where users can post their waypoint info, visible to others. On the first day of using Rockd I found amazing outcrops and places to visit I had no idea existed, none of the “pros” on UT mentioned them. Two thumbs up Rockd!
Shooter405,
Was working great but...
I’ve been using this APP for several months and found it to be extremely helpful in field and office. Very intuitive and easy to use until the last update. Suddenly the geological overlay now won’t upload to the base map and several other functions have seemingly gone dead. As of now only the compass and clinometer work. Even the tutorial has gone wonky. Hope this gets addressed soon otherwise I won’t be needed this app or recommending it to students.
J197625,
Great app, major bug fixes have succeeded!
Retracting my previous view about difficulty tracking location and the map refreshing back to your location every time you exit and come back. THANK YOU to the developers for fixing this. Excited to use this app more often now!
Pa Driller,
Drillers helper
I love this app, it enhances some of the knowledge I currently have for our Drilling projects. The only thing is I can no longer look up locations. I type in an address or state or country and nothing happens. I have to go to maps and scroll around to get where I want to be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
