Description

Stereonet Mobile is designed to help you collect, visualize, and analyze geological orientation data. It is a companion to my Stereonet program for desktop computers. As such I have tried to incorporate the basic functionality of that program, taking into account the inherent limitations of mobile devices. Some of the basic tasks that one can perform with Stereonet Mobile include:

• Provide automatic data entry as a geologist's compass by reading the iOS device orientation and converting it to strike and dip of planes and/or trend and plunge of lines. It is the only geology compass app that can use augmented reality to record the strike and dip of planes using the sighting method and the device camera.

• Provide manual data entry via either tapping and dragging on the stereonet or by typing values into text fields

• Plot lines and planes, which can be tagged using one of as many user defined data types (e.g., bedding, cleavage, slickensides, etc.) as you want

• Carry out basic calculations such as: rotations about any axis, planes from poles or poles from planes, measure angles between lines and between planes, and basic slope stability calculations

• Plot mean vectors, cylindrical best fits, rose diagrams, and contour lines.

• View the plots from any orientation, not just looking straight down into the lower hemisphere

• See the location of a datum on a map or satellite image (if you have an internet connection)

• Show realtime changes to the stereonet projection to help students understand the geometry of the device better

• Provide basic input and output of data using standard iOS conventions

• Works on iPhones or iPads. The program will work on iPods or iPads lacking a cellular data connection but those devices have fewer sensors and thus cannot be used in automatic data collection mode.

Version history

4.0.5
2022-10-31
v. 4.0.5 -- 30 October 2022

• Fixed a bug that cause a crash when the user changed settings BEFORE defining a project.

• When the user selects Dip azimuth and dip for the planes format, the labels on the Stereonet Screen now correctly show "Dip Az" and "Dip". Measurements were correct in that format, it was just that the labels didn't change as they should.
4.0.4
2022-07-19
v. 4.0.4 -- 2022.07.18

• Fixed an obscure bug in that could cause a crash when the data list table was rewritten.

• importing Stereonet Mobile text data now checks for duplicate identifiers in the incoming file and fixes them if necessary.
4.0.2
2022-07-06
V. 4.0.2 -- 2022.07.06

• Tap the "Strike" or "Trend" label on the Stereonet Screen to open the last entered datum directly in the Datum Details Screen, bypassing the Data List Screen entirely. This is useful if you want to immediately enter notes about your last measurement.

• Auto attitude is now turned off automatically when you leave the Stereonet Screen. Previously, if you turned auto attitude on, saved a measurement, and then left the Stereonet Screen to enter something in the datum details screen without first turning off Auto Attitude manually by toggling the switch or tapping in the stereonet, the device would keep "measuring" the orientation in the background. [This was not technically a bug but rather "the programmer never anticipated one way in which the users would want to use the app"! - ed.]
4.0.1
2022-06-08
v. 4.0.1 -- 2022.06.08

• Importing of clipboard text data of orientations lassoed in the StraboSpot and StraboSpot 2 apps now works again (Thanks, Sean!).

v. 4.0.0 -- 2022.05.28 A major release!
(Because of a file format change, be sure to save and export all of your data before updating to this version. While the version worked fine in testing and preserved user data with no problems, you always want to be sure when it comes to irreplaceable data! After you export/save your data, you can read in the data files and let the app convert them to the new format)

• Completely rewritten and modernized codebase

• File format is now as a SQLite database for each project. The user never needs to explicitly save any changes other than initial orientation measurements. All other changes are saved automatically. You can read in your old text based data files and have them converted automatically to the new database format. The original text files will remain in your Stereonet Mobile documents folder (which you can now access easily using the Files app).

• Metadata for orientations has been improved to include, among other things, a unique ID number and last modification date so that when importing data, orientations will not be duplicated

• All of Stereonet Mobile’s files can be accessed directly from the iOS Files app.

• Most screens have been redesigned based on experience. For example, the text boxes for strike and dip on the main screen are now at the top of the screen so they are never covered by the keyboard. Some icons have changed and buttons repositioned.

• All tables are now dynamic and use standard iOS gestures. By swiping left you can access a variety of operations much more efficiently than previously. For example, in the data list table, you can delete, show/hide, or show on the map any single observation without going to the datum details page. Likewise, in the tables displaying different data types, swipe left to edit or delete any data type.

• Calculations have been expanded to enable you to select data by date or by location. Once selected you can choose to show or hide those data, export them, or delete them.

• The map/satellite view has much expanded functionality. You can lasso data points and then choose to show/hide/export/delete them. You can also get location for any point on the map or measure the distance and bearing on the map by tapping and dragging. Finally, you can relocate, or assign a location to, any single datum by tapping the map at the point where you want to locate the datum.

• File I/O now uses the standard iOS file browser, meaning, among other things you can select files anywhere on iCloud Drive. The file browser also allows you to rename, copy, move, or delete any file that Stereonet Mobile can access. Export via Universal Clipboard (or AirDrop) facilitates using both Stereonet Mobile and GMDE Lite in a field environment and enables easy import to the desktop versions of Stereonet and GMDE.

• Stereonet Mobile now permits both download from and uploads to your StraboSpot account.

• Batch change of lines or planes types

• A (mostly cosmetic) bug in the contouring algorithm has been fixed for the case where the lowest contour intervals are completely closed around the outside of the primitive.

• And, most importantly :-) a new app icon that pays homage to Stereoent desktop!

3.4.1
2019-11-12
v. 3.4.1 11 November 2019

This version brings much improved compatibility with iOS 13. Screen formatting has been improved in some screens, the new iOS 13 sharing panel no longer causes the app to freeze and there have been some improvements to maps. Some crashing bugs fixed. There is no new scientific functionality but if you are using a recent iOS device and/or iOS system, you should download this version.
3.3.0
2018-07-23
v. 3.3.0 -- 2018.07.22

• Angle between lines now also reports the orientation of the plane that contains the two lines.

• Angle between planes now also reports the orientation of the line of intersection as well as the strikes and dips of the acute and obtuse angle bisectors.

• The app now has a view listing "best practices" for mobile device data collection which is accessible from the Settings View.

• Cosmetic bug fixes when using dip azimuth and dip format for planes: the data list view of planes is now labeled correctly.

• When using sighting down dip, the program now reports the dip azimuth and the dip, rather than the strike and dip, on the Sighting view, because that is what you are actually measuring when sighting down dip. However, strike and dip will be recorded if you have specified that format for planes. Likewise, sighting parallel to the strike always reports strike and dip because that is what you are physically measuring. If you have specified dip and dip azimuth, your measured planes will be displayed that way once you leave the screen.
3.2.3
2018-07-13
v. 3.2.3 -- 2018.07.12

The copy function in the Sharing Panel on the Stereonet View will now copy the most recently saved observation in JSON formatted text which you will be able to paste directly into the upcoming version of the StraboSpot app (or any other app that accepts text). This functionality only exists if you have StraboSpot Integration turned on it the Settings View (it is on by default, but you can turn it off). When StraboSpot Integration is turned off, the sharing panel in the Stereonet View functions as it did before: capturing an image of the current stereonet plot.
3.2.2
2018-04-20
v. 3.2.2 -- 2018.04.18

This version fixes a crashing bug that could occur in certain instances when importing data on the clipboard.
3.2.1
2018-03-06
v. 3.2.1 -- 2018.03.06

• This version is now fully location aware and, for non-U.S. systems fixes a bug in the Stereonet Mobile output file which was only *partially* location aware. Location awareness means that the app uses your regional settings to know whether to use a period, comma, or other character for the decimal point. Non-U.S. users who use commas as decimal points will now see commas throughout the interface. To facilitate file sharing, on input, Stereonet Mobile will interpret either periods or commas on reading a file or using text on the clipboard as a decimal point. Note that Stereonet Mobile never uses thousands separators anywhere so one should never enter numbers or modify its data file with thousand separators.
3.2.0
2018-03-04
v. 3.2.0

• You can now move the text entry boxes on the Stereonet View to the top of the window so that they interact more gracefully with the keyboard (for those of you who like to type in your data). In Settings, turn on the switch that says "Text boxes at top of screen". This choice can be saved as your default by tapping the Save Defaults button. A "Saved!" message briefly appears confirming successful saving of your preferences.

• Great circles can now be plotted as solid lines or using one of two different dashed line types. The interface for setting this is the same as the one for selection point symbols in the Data Type View: Tap the "Edit" button tap the line that you want to change and then select the line type in the table in the following view. Like point symbols, line types (solid or dashed) are not saved with the data set. Now every great circle can have a color and a dash/solid type.

• Stereonet v. 3.1 would crash if you had contours turned on and tried to share an image of the plot using the sharing panel. This has been fixed in this version.
3.1.0
2018-02-27
v. 3.1.0 -- 2018.02.25

• Color contour fill! You can now choose which lines data type you want to display with filled color contours (see screenshot). The data type to contour is selected in the Plot Configuration View. Note that the Location as Lat-Long or UTM control has been moved to the Settings View (where it should have been all along) to make room for the scrolling data type picker. There is also Contours section in the Settings View where you can control the opacity/transparency of the contour fill, whether you use color fill, lines, or both, and whether the contour lines use the data set color or not. Note that you can only fill the contours of one data type at a time now.

• Revamped Calculations View -- This view now scrolls and is equally viewable on all screen sizes. This will make it easier to implement additional calculations in the future. It is also more aesthetically attractive :)

•Redesigned Data List View -- The segmented control at the top now controls whether lines or planes are displayed. In previous versions, large data sets (N>~80) produced a noticeable slow down in display of the Data List View and could, with very large data sets cause memory problems. These issues have now been fixed in this version; the Data List View should display virtually as rapidly for data sets of any size.

• Your default data types/colors/symbols are now loaded for every data set. For this to work, you must have used the "Save Default" button in the Data Types View (accessible from the filter/funnel icon on the main screen) or saved a "DataTypesColorsPrefs.txt" to the Stereonet Mobile documents area. When you open a new data set, the default types will be loaded along with any unique datatypes that were defined for that dataset.

• Numerous bug fixes and interface tweaks. As always, some old bugs probably remain and new bugs may appear!

[A feature that many users apparently do not know about, but has been in all of the release versions of the program: When in Auto mode for data collection, you can tap anywhere on the Stereonet to freeze the measurement. This is particularly useful when measuring orientation by placing the iPhone on the underside of an overhanging surface where you can't see the face of the phone: just tap anywhere on the upper half of the phone screen to freeze the measurement. Then you can remove the phone from the surface and examine the measurement to decide whether or not you want to save it by tapping the Save button.]
3.0.3
2018-02-02
v. 3.0.3 -- Groundhog's day edition

Using the "Mail" button in the Sharing Panel of the Data View would result in the system stripping blank columns (i.e., with no data entries) from the text that was sent to Mail. These malformed data files could cause Stereonet on the desktop to crash. V. 3.0.3 provides a work-around for this by writing an underscore character, "_", to blank columns entries. Stereonet Mobile and Stereonet desktop will ignore these underscore characters upon reading in data from the clipboard or from a file.
3.0.2
2017-12-28
Stereonet Mobile v. 3.0 -- Now with StraboSpot integration!

• Tag your observations with the formal StraboSpot vocabulary for planes and lines, up to three levels deep in the case of planes. To do so, tap the Strabo button at the top right of the Datum Details view.

• Upload your data directly from your device to your StraboSpot account. Just tap save from the Data List view, then tap the StraboSpot button in the resulting dialog box. In the StraboSpot upload view, you can select an existing project or create a new project. All your data that have not been filtered out will be uploaded to a single new data set as individual spots.

• StraboSpot integration can be turned on or off in the Settings View; the default setting is on. You can also enter the geologist's name in settings.

• Slight redesign of the Datum Details View to show elevation for a line or plane.

• A "Data Recorded" sign briefly appears (and disappears automatically) to confirm that you have tapped the "Save" button in the Datum Details view.

• Kamb contouring has been fixed; in previous versions it was only showing every other contour line but now every line is plotted.

• Various other bug fixes and minor interface tweaks

• v. 3.0.2 corrects a non-crashing bug that affected clipboard input and prevented the app from reading the last line of clipboard text if that text lacked a trailing return character. Additionally, clarifies the reason for requesting access to user location.

2.1.6
2017-08-24
v. 2.1.6 -- Argh... Due to an auto layout change, v. 2.1.4 inexplicably (and quite unintentionally!!) killed the Map View. It returns in this version. Sorry for the slew of bugs and updates. I'm sure (cough, cough) that it won't happen again.
2.1.4
2017-08-23
v. 2.1.4 -- fixes a non-critical bug with point symbols that was inadvertently introduced in the last version.

v. 2.1.3 -- fixes a crashing bug that was introduced in v. 2.1.1

Please feel free to submit bug reports via my web page if you experience problems with any of my programs
2.1.3
2017-08-21
v. 2.1.3 Fixes a recently introduced but serious crashing bug that happened when a blank recovery file was written under a particular set of circumstances and then the program attempted to read it in on start up. Judging from my crash logs, it appears that a number of you were bitten by this bug -- my apologies. If you ever experience crashing of Stereonet Mobile, please do not hesitate to report it on my support web page. This version has no new functionality but you will definitely want to download this one!
2.1.1
2017-08-09
The v. 2.1.1 About View (reachable from the Settings View) has been updated with the complete reference to the just published Allmendinger et al. (2017) JSG paper which describes the functioning and accuracy of Stereonet Mobile. A button on the About screen will take you to the reference site at the publisher where you can download a pdf of the article for free until September 23, 2017.

v. 2.1.0 Mid-summer refinements:

• The recovery file now records all changes except calculations. When the app opens (i.e., when it has been purged from memory by the system or after it crashes) it automatically reads in the recovery file so you can pick up where you left off with minimal disruption. This change has required a minor change in the program file format. Current versions of Stereonet for the Desktop will ignore that change but the next version will read the complete file.

• All new files generated by the program will have the ".txt" suffix so that they are more easily recognized on the desktop. Stereonet Mobile can still read old files on your device without the suffix.

• Additional bug fixes including an obscure crash related to floating point rounding errors and trig functions (e.g., like trying to take the arcsine of 1.00000000001)

2.0.8
2017-07-10
v. 2.0.8 — One change in behavior and numerous irritating bug fixes, two of them crashing bugs, so you'll probably want to download this update. As always, save your data frequently and transfer it to desk/laptop or save it to iCloud or email it to yourself frequently to protect against all type of data loss. You can report any bugs via my web page.

• You can now enter the map/satellite image view even if you haven't entered any data (or none of your existing data have any location information). This will allow you to preview your field area and cache some images for offline use. You cannot control the size of the cache (unfortunately...)

• There were numerous bugs related to use of the data type button in the Datum Details View. Most, if not all, have been fixed (I hope :)

• If you selected the map view from Datum Details when there was no location information, the program would crash. This has been fixed.

• In the Data Type definition view, some of the text labels next to the color sliders did not update correctly. This has been fixed.

• In Auto Mode when you had selected Dip Azimuth and Dip format for planes, the text boxes still showed strike and dip. This has been fixed.
2.0
2017-07-06
WARNING: Be sure to transfer all of your data files from the phone to iCloud or to your desktop computer via email, AirDrop, or iTunes file sharing before installing a new version. New versions may delete any existing data files saved by a previous versions!

• Version 2 brings a completely new map view where you can see your see your orientations plotted on a satellite image or road map. If you tap the "folded" map icon button on the tool bar in the Data view, you will see orientation symbols for all of the visible data, plotted using the same color that you specified for the data type and is used on the stereonet. Planes are plotted with standard strike and dip symbol and lines with an arrow showing direction of plunge.

If you tap the map button from the datum details view, you will see just that one observation plotted. In both cases, the value of the dip or plunge is written next to the symbol, just as it would be on a map.

• Some minor cosmetic bug fixes...
1.9.0
2017-05-01
Continued fine-tuning as we approach the northern hemisphere field season. This update includes the following features and fixes:

• You can now import data via the iOS clipboard. From the Data List view, tap the Open button, and then select "tap for Clipboard text" in the new Clipboard section. Note that the format of the clipboard text has to be identical to the data file saved by Stereonet Mobile. Otherwise, the app will report that it cannot read the clipboard. When copying text to import into the program, be sure to select the complete header line in addition to the data, it self. This new feature allows for reasonably quick data exchange by field parties via email or any other way you can find to share files.

• The Data Type selector sheet now lets you define a new data type from within the sheet, regardless of whether you have summoned it from the Stereonet view, Sighting view, of the Datum Details view (see next bullet).

• In the Datum Details view, the type slider has been replaced by a button color coded to the currently assigned data type. In the Data Type selector sheet that slides up, you can select a different data type or assign a new data type

• continuing interface tweaks and bug fixes.
1.8.5
2017-04-23
When you start using your own app in the field as I did on a recent class field trip, you quickly realize where some of the weak points in the user interface are! This version corrects a couple of cosmetic issues:

• The DataType view has been redesigned making the on screen buttons more obvious. Adding a new data type now has its own button rather than the convoluted process in previous versions. The Save Defaults button is now visible at all times. The Edit Data type screen has been simplified by reducing the number of buttons at the bottom.

• Better visual feedback when you have tapped the Save button. Previously, there was a brief flash of the screen. In this version, the screen flash lasts for a full second and the words, "Data recorded" appear during the "flash" to let you know that, indeed, you did tap the Save button. The one second flash duration also makes it less likely that a data will be recorded twice because of an inadvertent double tap on the Save button.
1.8.2
2017-03-28
v. 1.8.2 corrects a bug related to the sighting view that could inadvertently change your data on files read from disks. Highly recommended!

Limbripper,
Very nifty
I’m a student and this is extraordinarily useful, thank you for making this, will recommend to other students and staff
Baby Je$u$,
Great
Super good
Kubisuro,
Oh my
I'm about to start a busy field season and this app is to become a critical part of it. I'll be mapping tension crack caves in Franciscan assemblage -- prime focus on joint orientation. Might even find the slope stability calculator useful! This'll be amazing.

Appears you must explicitly save data on the data screen else if the app shutdowns per iOS, you'll need to go to Open and load the recovery file. Best practice is to save your Project early and often!
misfitgeologist,
Just Super!
Excellent tool for students! Note to other misfits: If you are terrible at visualizing, or simply just struggling with structural geology lab, download this! Read the manual, super easy to use. Input the data, see, understand, commit concept to memory. Thank you Professor Allmendinger!
