Scales & Modes is an interactive visual and audio reference for the diatonic scales and modes that are fundamental in music theory. View major and minor modes on the musical staff, see fingerings for both keyboard and guitar, and listen to the scales note by note, in any key. Violin and bass guitar fingerings are also available as an in app purchase add on.
Diatonic musical scales and modes are one of the fundamental concepts of Western music theory. But the large number of scales makes learning and remembering them difficult. Scales & Modes is a handy mobile reference guide for viewing and listening to a large number scales and modes, including all the modes of the major, natural minor, and harmonic minor scales.
Select a root note and a scale to display the notes of the scale on the musical staff, and click “Play Scale” to listen. Select the Keyboard or Guitar tabs (or Violin and Bass after an in app purchase) to view fingering diagrams for the scale on those instruments, and press the info button to see more detail about constructing the scale.

Great app for learning modes
This app is a simple yet effective way of learning modes. They have piano and guitar notation for easy playing. The only thing that is annoying is that sometimes the app crashes but hopefully that can get patched up sooner or later.

I really like the app, could you add more scales?
I really like this app, would you be able to add the octatonic scale, and Messiaen‘s modes of limited transposition. Or maybe a feature to create and quiz your own custom scales too. Otherwise, it’s a very helpful app!

A cheap education
I've been using Scales and Modes for a couple of weeks now and it's actually been pretty darn helpful. If you're a guitarist anything like me, you've probably haven't had much in the way of real musical training and learned most of what you know from looking at tab diagrams and listening to recordings. This program is great for expanding your ability to explore familiar musical sounds and tonalities. Since learning the Phrygian mode my head has been banging a good 60 to 75% more and now that I've gotten a handle on the Mixolydian I feel as if I can yearn plaintively.

Inexpensive but not much to it. If they had a free version to see what it does would be better. Not worth buying.

Exactly what I needed.
I've been teaching my daughter piano for the past year. She's done remarkably well despite my lack of teaching ability. The only stumbling block has been the relationship of scales and modes -- I can explain and she learns the individual scales just fine, but their relationships have been difficult to convey. That changed within 5 minutes of downloading this app. The examples are clear, straightforward, and consistent. The contemporary music examples are totally relevant, whether from The Beatles, Guns n Roses, or Brahms, they have all be examples we know and are familiar with. Kudos to the great paper & script look, as well!

teacher that use Mac platforms. The additional fee for more instruments should made clear before purchasing but it's a very small fee and well worth it. This app. is a huge time saver in trying
to explain difficult music theory subjects and concepts through a well designed user interface. It is very easy to use and understand. The graphics are smooth, with nice script type that gives it a classical feel.
