This was going to be a minor update. You know, fix a few bugs, improve usability here and there. Those Setting toggles weren't so easy to see previously. And then I was going to wait until iOS was updated, so that you'd have support for that too.

But then I got to thinking, while we're all waiting, why not add a few more features. So I started working on one of the items that's been on the TODO list of customer recommendations for far too long.. Exam Mode. You can now do a multiple choice test through your entire level at any time.

And then I got to thinking, a few people have wanted some landscape orientation support, because there are those of you who swing that way, and that's cool, so we went ahead and did that one too.

And then I started learning Thai. I don't know Thai, but I was just putting the finishing touches on the Scribe Thai app, and realised I needed to use it to test everything. But Thai didn't make much sense to me, as I didn't have any background in it. What I needed was a super-mini grammar guide, to condense the basics of the language down into 30 or so phrases. And then I started thinking.. What if ALL apps had a super-mini grammar guide?? It was ingenious. So all the translators got going on perfecting that task, we set up recordings, and we went and added that.

And then I was thinking REALLY out of the box. What if we added a button to make the iPhone fly! Yup. Fly. Mini iPhone jet packs. So we got working on that, and got a demo going, and managed to get our iPhone to fly across the English Channel! It was awesome. But then we realised there were flight restrictions. iPhones aren't allowed to fly unmanned. FAA rules. So we had to remove that feature. Sorry about that.

But we do love our customers, so if you want this feature added back in, mail us! [email protected] .. yup, just right there. We'll always receive your email. And we'll always reply. So if it doesn't seem like we replied, check the email's spam folder. Spam folders get hungry and eat our messages.

Oh, and one final thought. These Scribe apps aren't very well known yet. If you've seen our facebook + twitter groups, you've probably noticed they're pretty small. What we'd like to do is to boost that up, to help people find out about the Scribe series and get a nice community of learners together. So please check that out. Especially if you want the iPhone to take flight again.

Peace and love,
Henry.

User #8542,
Great App for learning vocab
This app has a great set of features - it has voice clips, breaks down vocab into Kanji meanings, and the space repetition works well. I'm currently wrapping up the N3 vocab list ~200 words left.

Adding some of the following features would easily give this 5 stars:
- Fix the "Allow phone rotation" setting. Currently the app rotates regardless of the setting.
- Allow you open the Kanji in the Kanji/Hanzi app by clicking on the Kanji for each vocab word.
- Allow you to add notes to the front side of the notecard. Currently it's hard to distinguish between different meanings of an English word. For example, the English word "company" could be looking for kaisha, kousei, or nakama. Allowing us to add a secondary English meaning or word would help clue me into which word is desired.
HollowGalaxy,
すげいいいい!!!
Learned 90 vocabulary words in 5 days! In those, some used kanji, and I've memorized those two. It's addicting to use this app. It uses list of words such as from the JLPT or the way Japanese schools learn words. I wish that there was a list that supported the Genki I and II textbooks. Would have made it even easier.
dca8,
It looks like it’s been abandoned, but it’s pretty great
It’s basically a really good Japanese vocab flashcard app. Too bad it hasn’t had an update in two years, though it’s still working just fine for me in 2018.
Elmo_2xtreme,
Best app for Japanese learners
I used this app to improve my vocabulary and kanji recognition skills throughout college. It has so many features that you can practice exactly how you learn best.
361points,
Awesome app
Along with Origins, these apps will give you a great handle on Japanese. 5 minutes or 1 hour, study as long as is convenient.
VictorIT1,
Colors are hard to see.
Please make app series with colors that have strong contrast or user adjustable.
dainys,
Japanese vocabulary-building and kanji learning made streamlined and fun
I've been looking for a Japanese vocabulary app like this for a while. Something that teaches lots of words with audio pronunciation to learn the proper accent, and tests you on this knowledge with a variety of games including spaced repetition, tile matching, multiple choice, etc. This app does one thing and does it well: it teaches you the readings of kanji in the context of full words. No more trying to remember every reading of every kanji in one fell swoop -- learn them as you go. It also does a great job of making you learn several similar-sounding words in a row, so you can start to build associations and clearly understand which word is which. Above all, I love the simple and streamlined interface. You can set things up to match your learning style (for example, hiragana vs. romaji, the number of new words in a session, etc.) quickly and easily. And the icing on the cake is you have a cute helper egging you on to better and better proficiency. You won't learn stroke order with this app, but you'll learn everything else as it relates to kanji. Highly recommended.
Anime dragon,
I love it!
I downloaded this app a few days ago out of curiosity and having already known a fair amount of Japanese vocabulary words. By the next day I had to get the full version it was so much fun. The flash card functions are smooth and effective and so are the other games. I've found that I am remembering more words than I ever have using the app Kanjibox. I highly recommend this app to anyone who is learning Japanese!

My only complaint is that when I jotted down a note on the flashcard game for the word for health I mistyped and now it won't let me delete the note or renter a new note. Please fix this! Otherwise the app is flawless and is still a great buy. It's totally worth the 8 dollars I think it was for the full version.
Vandellyr,
Lots of ways to learn
I am using this app regularly now trying to increase my vocabulary. It really does a good job at keeping me interested by offering several ways to learn and quiz myself. It is fun to use. There are a few things I would like added to the app. Like the ability to touch words in the example sentences and see what they mean. Or spoken sentences to get the context of similar words while using flash cards...etc. I hope they will add more grammar in this app. Like intermediate too! But overall this app has a lot to offer. And I recommend it for anyone that wants to add to their vocabulary.
Nepali chimney,
Flaw in the algorithm?
I read a lot of reviews before purchasing the full version, and I noticed that most people have a very positive opinion about this app. I can't agree. They seem to have ripped off KanjiBox's quiz style but improved on the appearance. I like that they added an おばちゃん voice that speaks the words as a means of multimodal input, and I like the kanji breakdown by radical. On the other hand, no matter how much I tweak the settings, I can't seem to get to a point where I get true spaced repetition. Every time I start, the app gives me the same 4-5 あ words (炙る, 暴れる, あいまい, 相変わらず, etc) before moving on to a ton of words I've never seen and will never see again. I'd love to see an update that improves the SRS functionality, and I'll happily raise my star rating at that point! Lots of potential with this app.
