This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

Photo saving failure was showing an unhelpful "Data unavailable" error when the user didn't grant the app access to the Photo Library.
Now the app will present a detailed message about how to enable the required permissions to be able to save photos.

For the 2-level filter there is now a slider that allows to adjust the threshold between black & white.
So now you can apply a different threshold depending on the photo brightness.

Troutpick,
Love the app, but a question
The live crosshair reading seems almost too sensitive, with the numbers constantly jumping up or down 6 points regardless of how steady I hold the thing. Is there a way to reduce the sensitivity a bit or average out the readings over a second’s time? I get that it is simply being accurate, but it is an accuracy beyond my appreciation on a tiny phone screen.
Bruce Boatner,
Accurate values are critical!
One of my art teachers used to say if color was a yardstick, value would be 34 inches of it. If you can break an image down into just four values, you were already 90% ahead of the game. One trick is to load in a photograph, convert it to four values, and save it. Then use the target pointer to tell you what values to use I use a controlled pallet, so every color is premixed and tubed in nine values. That’s like doing all your work up front and with a tool like this it makes the whole process super easy . Paint simple flat shapes in four values, then go back over it when it’s dry, adjusting any values if necessary, and smoothing the transitions between the shapes. Voilà!

Now a Notan viewer!
My wife is an artist and see needs to view a photo is black and white to see the balance between the two before she starts a pastel. More importantly, see needs the ability to adjust the black level to more than just 50/50.

A painting with half the area black is not pleasing. Some scenes balance well at 30/60, or 40/60 or some value in-between. This app now has a slider that allows for such adjustment. It’s the only app for iPad that exists for iOS 11. Ann considers this app vital to her painting. Great job by the developer! She uses it every day.

Very useful app...and fun to use
I use this app to reduce my photos to grayscale and then play with the value levels to help me adjust an image for use in relief printing. It’s great! And it is definitely worth the 99 cents to have access to your photo library.

Additionally, the developer provides good customer service. He actually responds to the questions and concerns of his users, which, in my experience, is something that is relatively uncommon in the app world.

So helpful in painting
I’ve often converted photos to grayscale in the iPhone camera app to be able to better view values but this app allows me to choose 2, 3, or 4 value scales so that the differences really stand out. It also allows me to take a photo directly which means I can check my paintings as I paint to ensure I’m getting the values right. Absolutely worth the dollar cost.

Artists’ delight
Just aim at t at the scene. No need to snap the photo to see the tonal values in two, three, four or “continuum” modes. I didn’t really need the in-app features, but I bought them immediately because this app is exactly what I was looking for after a lengthy search. However, I’m not sure if you CAN actually take a photo other than a screenshot. If so, it’s not obvious.
Hestermofet,
Great app!
Accurate and easy to use. The only thing it could improve on is having writing tool so you could mark the value number. That would be great when converting to another hue, and making a paint by number for value. Improves your “painters eye” as well...you’ll notice a marked increase of accuracy in reading value of any color. Well worth it👍
Lillie Vali,
This is wonderful!
New to color theory and trying to train my eyes to the value scale for painting. This is helping me with instant feedback to my guessing what a value is in the world around me. It’s a great game to play in down time and really helps reinforce the principles.
Highly recommend this for all ages and skill levels.

Had a minor issue with a bug -reset my phone and am able to complete in app purchase to load photos

Exactly what I needed
Thanks

One of my fav apps for painting
Seeing the right values is a mainstay of making a good painting. This app has been part of my process since it first came out. The notan part is ok but gives me mixed results. But the crosshair part is just stellar to figure out where the darkest darks and lightest light are
