Description

Shredder, the most successful chess program ever, is now also available for the iPhone. You can play against Shredder, analyze with him and solve chess puzzles. It offers the usual Shredder standard for your pocket.

In addition to the outstanding playing strength of the 12 times computer chess world champion, Shredder is also able to mimic the play of a human chess player with any playing strength. He even deliberately makes typical human mistakes in those levels.

Solve 1000 built in chess puzzles. Shredder keeps track of your performance and offers advice if needed.

You can adjust Shredder’s playing strength from beginner to master level. If you like, Shredder automatically adjusts his strength to yours. He even calculates an Elo rating for you. This is how the playing strength of chess players is typically measured.

During the game a coach is watching your moves and warns you if you are about to make a mistake.

See how you are getting better and better the more games you play and the more chess puzzles you solve.

Bosbillk,
Rating bug
Great chess game I’ve been using for years. Suddenly there’s a bug where after a game the computer says it will increase its rating to the maximum (2600) difficulty, even if I lose. It used to work well and increment based on performance and it was my favorite feature.
kulsayogi,
Shedder RULES!
I absolutely LOVE this app!

Shredder is by FAR the best chess app I’ve ever used.

It’s breathtakingly FAST!

Using it in “aggressive mode” is how I like to use it, because it makes every game FUN!

Beyond the excitement of each game played that way, I find that taking additional time to study the record of each game solidifies my understanding of what the hell happened 🤔 🤣

A summary of all my experience doing battle with Shredder:
among all the best living players I’ve ever gone up against — even the most accommodating, patient, informative, and generous of opponents — none has taught me as much in such an amazingly short time as has Shredder.

In aggressive mode, even though I realize it’s thinking far, far ahead and referring to a huge database of games played by grand masters to prepare itself for each potential move (modifying both its strategy and its tactics along the way), it makes each move so ridiculously quickly that I just pretend I’m facing a truly awesome competitor who will still gladly teach me how to weigh the options in any given situation and to think ahead the way he does. It’s wonderful! ♥️

I’ve enthusiastically recommended Shredder to every chess lover I’ve ever known, and each of them has wound up doing exactly the same.

Pass it on!
5320,
It works, but get the lite version
The title says it all- this works well enough; but it’s slow and the puzzle solutions are full of problems. This app was highly recommended to me by two good players, so it’s disappointing to find several mistakes in their puzzle solutions within the first day using the app. I do like the customization of the board and pieces available and the fact that I can review and analyze other games, etc.; but the interface could be improved quite a bit. Overall, it’s decent for an easy way to ply against a bot of customizable difficulty but there are better chess apps out there.

Not Realistic
I’m getting sick and tired of this app. I’m a class A player (1800+) and like to play on the app on the rides home. No matter what setting I choose I get demolished at 1800. At the 1700 its too easy. I play live over the board tournaments all the time and rarely (never) do you see 1800 players attack wildly before they even develop. The app gets away with it because it has perfect calculation within a number of plays. If I wanted to play a harder level I would choose 2100+ in the settings. Please calibrate this app. If I wanted to play against a titled caliber player I would not choose the 1800 setting at normal. Other than that the app works fine.
Richardd9229,
Simply the best. I've tried the rest
This is hands down the
absolute best chess app ever. I tried every one over the years and this is the best there is. It will give you chess problems to solve and let you stop in the middle and play that position from either side. I cannot say enough about the thought that went into this app. Very versatile and fast. Thanks for making it so intersectional. I love the problems and use them every day to stay sharp. Bprijadi,
Still rocks after 2 years of no updates
I believe this is my best purchase on a chess app on IOS. I spent $7.99 in Feb of 2013 for this and after 10 years and many IOS version updates Shredder chess still is my go-to chess app for puzzles, playing, and learning. 1000 puzzles is a lot, and the best thing is I can continue playing against the engine at the position where the puzzle is solved for endgame practice.
ElegantScience,
Great, with one caveat
This is a fantastic chess app - probably the best on the App Store. The biggest problem: I'm just really disappointed that you can play only one game at a time. You should be able to play multiple games you can toggle back and forth between. Right now, it's only one game at a time... Which makes it very slow for playing different positions or openings simultaneously. So that makes it a bit annoying to use as a self-teaching app.

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 10.x
It is great to see that the Shredder development team has continued to support this application. Such continued efforts are the hallmark of quality on iOS, and serve as the gold standard to all prospective developers. Thanks for a great app.

Edit: The latest updates have been halfhearted at best. It would be nice to see the developers give this gem the attention and polish it deserves, as I'd love to increase my rating to 5-stars.
manmish,
Best part is guidance and problem solving
I like the puzzles, the puzzles vary in difficulty level, so I do not find them too easy or too daunting. I keep on getting hints when I make mistake or I use analysis in the end. I would like some analysis for better lines in addition to the evaluation number.
Orthoplan,
Playing strength control not working
At the beginning of a game, the program works more or less at the preset playing strength. However, during the middle game it often pumps up its rating significantly (validated with Crafty). A player at a moderate 1600 should continue to play at this level until the end and not suddenly play flawlessly. This is particularly annoying during a Blitz chess game.
