Shredder, the most successful chess program ever, is now also available for the iPhone. You can play against Shredder and solve chess puzzles. It offers the usual Shredder standard for your pocket.
The 12 times computer chess world champion Shredder is able to mimic the play of a human chess player with any playing strength. He even deliberately makes typical human mistakes in those levels.

Good but could be better
I really like this app, but a couple of glitches...
The first problem I have is with the puzzles. The app gives you the option of playing the same game as the puzzle, to give you a chance to practice solving the puzzle. But what happened last time I played it, I won the game in 3 moves, only I went back to the puzzle and it told me my moves were incorrect! I then used the "coach" (question mark) to discover the moves the game thought I should make & it won the game in several more moves than I had. Not much teaching in that, and I wouldn't consider myself an expert by any means. Also many of the puzzles are too lengthy, requiring too many moves to mate. I could see 3 or 4 but 10 or more leaves too many other directions the game could go. Also, if you decide to "play" the puzzle, you can simply use the question mark to discover the appropriate move, go back to the puzzle and "solve" it. Once the puzzle option of playing it is chosen and the question mark help is utilized, you should not be able to go back and get points for supposedly solving the puzzle. Other than those issues, nice app, especially for the price ;-)

Excellent for novice players
I have been using Shredder for more than a decade. I love that they have a clean, simple version with up to 1500 elo rating which should prove plenty for me for some time to come. They collect no data which I much appreciate. I like to play on my own without any hints but with the option to revert a move which this app allows. Clean wholesome free app from a credible chess software company.

Fantastic app for beginners
This was a great app to get me started. You can easily rewind to any point in the game and change your move at any time. Also gives you suggestions. You can also save your game for later analysis or just to rewatch. But now that I'm past 1500 Elo, I'm looking for a stronger chess engine.

Great game
I love this one. You are given suggestions a move might not be the best choice and a hint of a better one. As I played game after game my memory of the game improved, as did my confidence. I found my skill grew. Very engaging for me. I've tried many chess games and this for me is a keeper. Thanks!!

App not updated
App isn’t updated to use the entire screen available in latest versions of iPhones. It looks weird that the chess board just shows up only in the top half of the phone screen

Wish I could find a chess Tudor
Your tutor works well until you don't go up in scale. At that point in the game playing your algorithm changes and starts playing so far above my level that is not a trainer at all it's just an ego trip for you. Sure glad I didn't spend the money to buy the full version!

Very nice Chess game...lite version only goes to 1500 Elo
Shredder Lite is said to act and perform just as the full version, which it does appear to do. I have Fritz Chess and wanted to try Shredder, so this lite version was the perfect way to try it without spending $9.99. I must say I really like Shredder Chess. One thing I like that Fritz doesn't have (yet) it the scoreing meter. This meter lets me know how I am doing and if I am moving ahead or behind. One thing you should know before you buy it (even though it is only $0.99) is that it only goes up to 1500 Elo. And, if you have Fritz, let it be known that 1500 Elo on Shredder is not the same as 1500 Elo on Fritz. I thought 1500 Elo should be 1500 Elo regardless of program - I thought it was some type of universally standard measurement. Let me tell you, 1500 Elo on Shredder is like the 500 to 700 level on Fritz. Fritz is supposedly working on an update and maybe they will address many of these issues. Nevertheless, if you wanted to try Shredder w/o giving up your $10 first, this is a good way to do it. Personally I think it is a wonderful program and the lite version demonstrates that without being watered down (unless you play well over 1500 Elo level). Oh, by the way, the lite version will auto adjust its playing level so it will closely match your playing strenght - this makes playing against the computer so much more fun.

Explanations?
I've only had this app for a few days but I already know it's my favorite chess app. I'm thinking I will buy the full version.
The only thing that bothers me is that there's no explanations behind the puzzle solutions. Being the extremely low-level beginner I am, I find that a lot of the "best possible moves" don't look like the best, and I would really like to know why they are so I can actually improve my skills instead of randomly guessing until I get it right. The puzzles are my favorite part of this app and I think with a little clarification they would be even better.
Other than that it's a great app. I highly recommend it.
