Description

••••• The Kids Learn! Sight Words app series is a 2012 nominee for a Distinguished Achievement Award presented by the Association of Educational Publishers. •••••

Give your child the building blocks needed to learn to read. Combine fun, easy-to-follow activities with hands-on and audio features to jumpstart the learning process. Created by reading experts such as Dr. Fry, Kids Learn Sight Words uses developmentally appropriate approaches to let the child

● hear the words
● practice writing the words

● recognize letters
● record the words with playback

● use the words in activities

It combines fluency, vocabulary, spelling, and comprehension practice with entertaining, engaging graphics in a disguised-learning format. Children will want to play again and again and by doing so, will be learning up to 300 all-important sight words. Great for young learners and older children struggling with reading.

This app contains words 1–25 for free with an option to purchase additional word packs (26–100, 101–200, 201–300). Each set of words comes with planned related activities. Activities change and progress as the child moves along:

• Word Jigsaw Puzzle
Touch a puzzle piece to hear a word. Look for the word on the puzzle outline. Then move the puzzle piece onto the correct place on the puzzle outline. Repeat this process until the entire puzzle is put together. Word Jigsaw Puzzles are random and different each time; play as much as you like.

• Word Tic Tac Toe
Tap on the picture of the ear to hear a word. Click on that word in the Tic Tac Toe grid. Next, the computer takes a turn. Keep playing the computer until one of you has three in a row. The computer will also automatically say the next word to you. Tic Tac Toe games are random and different each time; play as much as you like.

• Word Matching Game
Touch one card to turn it over. Touch another card to find one that matches the first card. Keep turning over cards until you have matched all the pairs. Matching games are random and different each time; play as much as you like.

• Hangman

Look at the blank lines at the bottom of the screen. Tap a letter in the alphabet. If you have correctly guessed a letter in the word, the letter will appear in the blank. If not, a body part will be added to the person. You have ten tries to correctly spell the word. Hang man uses the words you just learned, as you learn five words at a time.

• Word Chain
Use the word tiles to make your own sentences. Be sure to use at least one of the words at the top of the screen in each sentence you make. Then touch the star to have your sentence read to you. Shake to erase and reset the words.

• Star Speller

Touch a star to hear a word. Touch a letter in the word that you heard, and drag the letter into one of the blank boxes. Keep dragging letters into the blank boxes until you have spelled the word. Touch the checkmark to hear the correct spelling of the word.

• Word Search
Touch each word on the left side of the screen to hear it read. Look for each word in the word search. When you find a word, drag your finger from the beginning to the end of the word to highlight it. Word searches are random and different every time; play as much as you like.

Settings: To set specific settings for this app, go to the Apps section at the bottom of the iPad’s settings menu. Touch the Sight Words app’s icon to open its settings. This will allow you to either automatically clear all content when the app is closed or save writings and recordings.

The full version with all words can also be purchased directly from iTunes. See Sight Words 1-300: Kids Learn.

therealjdash,
My 3yr old
So far we have bought the 1st hundred words of this app & I love it. My daughter loves the matching & tic tac toe games. Shes a little young for the hangman or spelling games so we skip them. I only wish there was a scramble function or parental control that would allow me to create a list of words my daughter is struggling with. This would make it easier for her to review specific words without having to go through all the words. I may be asking for a lot but it would be nice if there was a trace feature option on the app for the little ones that are still working on writing by way of tracing. Either way this app is teaching my daughter. She knows at least 85 of the words & she's only 3.
Nop73,
Great app!
I love the amount of words I get for free and then the reasonable cost to buy the rest.
My four year old has learned a lot from this app.
He loves recording his own audio. He has a speech delay and hearing himself has helped him a lot.
Wife & mother of 3,
Very basic
My 3 year old can do these words.

Smart App!
This app is great for kindergarten and early first grade. The students practice the sight words by, listening, reading, spelling and recording and listening to their own voices pronouncing the words. After each group of five words there is a fun game to reinforce identifying the targeted sight words. I recommend using a stylus for the writing practice. There are a couple things that would make this app better. The print could be in D'Nelian since this is a broadly taught form of handwriting. Also, my students' favorite game is the nature puzzle that follows the first five sight words. I wish that game was available for the other words or on a related app available for purchase.
Frustrated... Seriously???,
Would be great to have a few custom words
I love this app! One thing I would like to suggest is if we were able to add three or so custom words (I know this is free, so the full version should be able to have more). I enjoy this, and only ask for the custom words so that I may input students' names to practice their own spelling! The only other suggestion I have about the current version is to have the letters reach from the top of the space to the bottom, as they are taught (top, middle, bottom). Otherwise, great job.
Maxweljl,
Good and Bad
I really like the games and the fact that the kids can write the sight words in the lines like they would on a piece of paper. However, the kids don't have to spell the word correct or at all in order to move on. They could just click through or scribble to get to the games. If there was a way to track their progress or give them the option of telling them they need to do their best work, I think that would greatly increase the value of this learning tool.
Austinrca,
Poor Navigation
This app does a good job of presenting the words, and has some great activities to make learning fun, but the navigation is very rigid. You can't go to a particular place or activity. You have to follow a prescribed sequence to get where you want to go. That is ok the first time through the words, but after that, the child should be able to go straight to Hangman, or another activity without being constrained by the program to go through a sequence first.
Gna2000,
Brilliant for emergent readers.
Love the adaptation of classic games like tic tac toe and hangman and concentration after each level. LOVE the record your voice. I can check each student's pronunciation with them after they complete the unit! Will definitely recommend without reservation to our parents. And especially thanks for no annoying ads to pluck kids away from the intended activity.
TurbineCrush,
My 5 yr old loves it!
My 5 year old loves playing this game. We use it while his brother is in karate, and I am amazed at how well this keeps his attention. I have also been surprised at how well this has helped increase his retention of the sight words. My husband was surprised after a couple of weeks, how well he was reading short books. I recommend this app to aid in sight word retention.
