Description

••••• The Kids Learn! Sight Words app series is a 2012 nominee for a Distinguished Achievement Award presented by the Association of Educational Publishers. •••••

Give your child the building blocks needed to learn to read. Combine fun, easy-to-follow activities with hands-on and audio features to jumpstart the learning process. Created by reading experts such as Dr. Fry, Kids Learn Sight Words uses developmentally appropriate approaches to let the child

● hear the words
● practice writing the words

● recognize letters
● record the words with playback

● use the words in activities

It combines fluency, vocabulary, spelling, and comprehension practice with entertaining, engaging graphics in a disguised-learning format. Children will want to play again and again and by doing so, will be learning up to 300 all-important sight words. Great for young learners and older children struggling with reading.

This app contains words 1–300 with planned related activities. Activities change and progress as the child moves along:

• Word Jigsaw Puzzle
Touch a puzzle piece to hear a word. Look for the word on the puzzle outline. Then move the puzzle piece onto the correct place on the puzzle outline. Repeat this process until the entire puzzle is put together. Word Jigsaw Puzzles are random and different each time; play as much as you like.

• Word Tic Tac Toe
Tap on the picture of the ear to hear a word. Click on that word in the Tic Tac Toe grid. Next, the computer takes a turn. Keep playing the computer until one of you has three in a row. The computer will also automatically say the next word to you. Tic Tac Toe games are random and different each time; play as much as you like.

• Word Matching Game
Touch one card to turn it over. Touch another card to find one that matches the first card. Keep turning over cards until you have matched all the pairs. Matching games are random and different each time; play as much as you like.

• Hangman

Look at the blank lines at the bottom of the screen. Tap a letter in the alphabet. If you have correctly guessed a letter in the word, the letter will appear in the blank. If not, a body part will be added to the person. You have ten tries to correctly spell the word. Hang man uses the words you just learned, as you learn five words at a time.

• Word Chain
Use the word tiles to make your own sentences. Be sure to use at least one of the words at the top of the screen in each sentence you make. Then touch the star to have your sentence read to you. Shake to erase and reset the words.

• Star Speller

Touch a star to hear a word. Touch a letter in the word that you heard, and drag the letter into one of the blank boxes. Keep dragging letters into the blank boxes until you have spelled the word. Touch the checkmark to hear the correct spelling of the word.

• Word Search
Touch each word on the left side of the screen to hear it read. Look for each word in the word search. When you find a word, drag your finger from the beginning to the end of the word to highlight it. Word searches are random and different every time; play as much as you like.

Settings: To set specific settings for this app, go to the Apps section at the bottom of the iPad’s settings menu. Touch the Sight Words app’s icon to open its settings. This will allow you to either automatically clear all content when the app is closed or save writings and recordings.

b) Dragging the eraser can be used to erase individual words or correct small mistakes.

3) Sentence building activities
a) Will now read the sentences you make back to you when you tap on the star.
b) Will also now allow you to use a given punctuation mark more than once.

MomOF3Boys88,
I really liked it
I looked everywhere for a simple app to learn sight words without distracting ads or locked features which would agitate him. This is easy to use if he doesn’t know a word he just taps it and it reads the word for him and writing it out helps him remember the spelling of the word he was having trouble with the first 100 sight words and he has already learned the first 80 worth the price (I had also purchased sight ninja but he was more excited about the game aspect and was just slicing the words)
ModerFanily,
App uses Fry’s sight words
This is a perfect app to supplement lessons on Fry’s sight words. It has up to the 300th word on the Fry’s lists. Highly recommended!

Kids Learn Sight Words
My 6yr old son likes angry birds and world of goo like everyone else, but he also likes this and thinks of it like another game. You'd think he'd like it for the tic tac toe, puzzles, hangman, etc. but he seems to have the more fun playing with the star and the recording feature. I'm just glad to see him having a good experience with words.
Pwrchrd,
Would be awesome if it saved work
I really want to love this app! It has great potential and my daughter appears to enjoy it. However, it does not appear to save your work between sessions. This means the user must remember which of 300 words they have already done or redo previous words, which irritates my daughter. There is a setting for clearing work between sessions but it does not appear to change the behavior. I have contacted their customer support and they indicate this is designed functionality even though their app and app store description indicate it has a save feature. If I can't get this fixed I will ask for a refund.
Hopeful for New Update,
A Little Disappointed
This app would be better if you were able to choose the exact words you want to use instead of the predetermined lists. Also, this app does not recognize handwriting so a child can write anything and move to the next word. There are apps that recognize and say the name of each letter written and then say the name of the word again. If these features were added I would give 5 stars.
Montessorians,
simple, straightforward
I teach 1st grade, and this app covers the first 200 Fry words. It is no nonsense, without lots of gimmicks and crazy stuff. Each review activity helps the student to practice the word; I think some are better than others. This is something that kids can do independently for practice.
Cherelyn00,
Excellent...One Suggestion
This app has been wonderful in teaching my preschooler the sight words. However, one feature that I would like to see is the ability to trace the sight words in addition to actually writing them freehand. Tracing for preschoolers is instrumental in being able to develop their writing skills and letter formation. Your consideration would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Vabronxboogie,
Great app
I'm giving this 5 stars because this app rocks for my 4 year old. I don't think it's fair the above reviewer based it on not having first asked for multiple accounts. I can teach my son 5 words a week and write it, find it, etc.
SLNCEducator,
Great learning app
Learn 300 basic sight words and have fun at the same time--what more could you ask for!
GemMama2Boys,
Good app
Bright cheery colors. The words are spoken when tapped. The drawing of the letters is smooth and responsive. The whole app flows very nicely. Sprinkled throughout are fun games like a picture puzzle, hang man and tic-tac-toe.
