Description

Sign 4 Me iPad app now works with Siri Speech Recognition!

Sign 4 Me is the ULTIMATE tool for learning sign language. The ONLY iPad app using a full-body avatar providing sign language instruction in 3D! Our 3D character can be zoomed in or out and rotated to give you the best vantage point for every sign. YOU control the placement of the character - not us! No other product lets you do this!

The library includes more than 11,500 words. Type in sentences, phrases, words, and the alphabet. If your iPad has Apple’s Siri Speech Recognition, then Sign 4 Me will also translate your spoken words into Signed English. Everything you enter will be saved in your History. Easily locate your entries by date or alphabetically. Delete whatever you don’t want to keep.

Use the controls to speed up or slow down the signing; turn on or off the looping feature; and send the character to his “home” or default position.

SEE BELOW FOR HELPFUL TIPS AND CONTROLS.

Vcom3D, the original developer of SigningAvatar® sign language software using 3D characters, wants you to be able to learn sign language the way you need to communicate. If you have a friend or co-worker who is Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing, now you can learn signs to communicate with them. The playback is in Signed English for the hearing person who wants to learn basic sign.

Our ASL team of 8 Deaf professionals created these accurate ASL signs based on their native knowledge of sign language.

NOTE on Signed English VS. ASL – Sign 4 Me includes ASL hand signs in English word order. The grammars of Signed English and ASL are different. For example, “What is your name?” in Signed English uses the same signs as ASL, but in the exact word order of the English sentence. Using ASL grammar would change this to “Your name what?” If you type or speak in ASL word order, Sign 4 Me will use that word order. Dynamic translation from English to grammatically correct ASL is a complex problem including more than word order differences just as translation from any language into another would. We are currently researching mapping English grammar to ASL grammar.

This product is intended for the beginning learner or anyone with an interest in learning signs. We hope to foster better communication between the hearing and the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing communities.

HELPFUL TIPS -

To learn how to reproduce a sign, we recommend slowing down the signing speed, zooming in and rotating the character so you can see it from different angles. This will give you a better view of the proper handshape and movement of the sign. This is especially helpful for finger spelling.

If you are interested in learning the alphabet, type in ABCDE, etc. with NO space in between each letter. The character will show you what each letter sign looks like.

3D CONTROLS -
Zoom in - Spread 2 fingers across screen.
Zoom out - Bring 2 fingers back together.
Rotate - Swipe with one finger.
Pan - Use 2 fingers to grab and move character.

2D CONTROLS -
Delete All - Use trashcan in History to delete all of your entries.
Delete one line - Swipe across line and touch Delete button when it appears.

SIRI SPEECH RECOGNITION CONTROL-
Open your Sign 4 Me app. Touch the text box. Your digital keyboard will appear. This keyboard includes a microphone icon. Touch the microphone icon and speak to your iPad. Press “Done” to process. “Done is the same button you would press to process text entered with the keyboard.

wbe1981,
Great idea but needs work!
This is a great idea and concept but there is PLENTY of room for improvement. For instance, there are many common words that aren't in the library (like many numbers, i.e. The sign for fifteen according to the avatar is signing a one followed by a 5). Further, many words are simply finger spelled rather than showing the real sign. This is probably done in order to attest that they have the 11,500 words in their dictionary. For instance, they don't even have the sign for the verb "do" - such a common word, yet the avatar simply finger spells it!

There should also be some form of feedback mechanism to send suggestions for signs not in their system yet. This is especially true for the words they just finger spell, which I find to be a total cop out.

This app is great as a SUPPLEMENT to other ASL tools like books or flash cards. Given the limited scope of the word pool, I would highly suggest that you have other resources at the ready.
Nae Nae 756,
Not recommending this app.
If this is the exact English signing no thank you. There is more fingerspelling then signing the word. For as much as this app cost I expected more than just fingerspelling.
Nkatie,
Crashes
I was hopeful about the app but the microphone does not work - ever time I try to use the microphone the app crashes
nuclearspike,
needs more vocabulary!
There are too many words that this doesn't know and just finger spells. They also have chosen to not include any slang/vulgar terms and the avatar just skips those words without any finger spelling. I like the app, but it could be enhanced quite a bit. One of the books on signs I have explains the meaning behind the signs, that would provide a huge benefit as well. For example, the sign for "boy" is to indicate the brim of a baseball cap, knowing that, it makes it very easy to remember. I'd love to see the option of having the explanations. Having said that, I still like this app, I just wish the creators would continue to enhance it. It hasn't changed in years.
Yeya21,
It's ok
So I bought the app and it's great but there's just one thing I found that a couple of signs were wrong. I have a deaf boyfriend and he said that some were incorrect. But other than that it really is pretty helpful.
Happysap,
I learned how
I had written a negative review before I finally figured out how to use it. Stick with it. I have a client who is deaf but has limited signing skills, he and I were able to communicate using this, a combination of reading and signing. I was able to slow it down so we could figure it out. This is the best I've seen because you can use words instead of having to spell.
'graphix',
A Lot of Thought
The creators put a lot of thought into tech and design. Most languages are taught idea by idea or word for word so don't fault the team for not putting forth effort and energy . Bernard Bragg taught his language to hearing persons in this manner .
Nana_Quilts,
Sign 4 Me
Has some limitations, but the best app to use because it is 3D and ASL is 3D. Other apps r still drawings and do not clearly show the motion critical to the sign.
CarenKatlene,
Great app
This app is really great! I've learned so much just after the first time I used it!
Active user and thinker,
3D
Most interesting app for learning sign language.
