Description

Practice Chinese writing with Skritter, whether you have a strong grasp of written Chinese and want to remember the characters better or are a beginner who doesn’t know where to start.

Skritter has existed for more than 10 years, and for a good reason: our learners are amazing! They help us with feedback which allows us to create what we think is the best Chinese writing app out there!

If you have seen Chinese writing before, you probably noticed that it requires us to learn characters rather than the roman alphabet we know from English. You can learn it through our “decks” (similar to a card deck) based on topics and difficulty.

Popular Decks:
- Ordering or making coffee or tea (so you can get your morning caffeine fix)
- Chinese Stroke Order
- HSK 1-6 & New HSK3.0 1-9 study decks
- More advanced topics like Yoga and talking about your Emotions
- The 16-episode Ultimate Chinese Character course

First, you learn a character’s meaning, reading, and tone; then practice writing it! Before you know it, you’ll want to learn thousands of characters, and words like these two happy users:

“If I could only keep one app on my iPod, this would be it without a doubt. Skritter will change your life!”
― Wendy Werneth, UN Translator

“Learning to write characters has never been so fun. From writing zero to 2000+ characters in six months!”
― Brian Jackson, Economist

Try our app and see for yourself why thousands of people use it every day.

Better Than a Pen and Paper
The new updated app is a big improvement from the previous app. It’s functionally fluid and easily intuitive to the point that I often opt for the app as opposed to traditional writing practice.

One improvement I hope to see in the near future is the ability to consistently study one single character. Both the ‘due cards’ and ‘continuous’ features don’t provide for the option to write the same character continually until I’ve learned from rote memory. Perhaps this is somewhat antithetical to the idea of the SRS learning structure, but often when I incorrectly write a character, I need to study several other characters that I inevitably write incorrectly as well because I’ve only just learned them. I understand there is the ‘learning’ feature, so I could potentially practice writing the character this way, but the process is a bit slow if I’ve already learned the bulk of the character’s structure. In tandem with this, it would be helpful to see a category of all the characters you’ve consistently forgotten so that each one can be independently studied.

Regardless, I’ve found the app to be wonderfully complementary to my learning experience, being able to study directly from published books related to Taiwanese mandarin makes this app excellent insofar as supplementary learning materials in the Taiwanese dialect can often be hard to find.
Dian Wms,
Truly Unique
I recommend this app to anyone beginner or advanced learner. I really like the way it allows me to focus my learning on one aspect of Chinese, such as tones, or I can choose to allow it to mix things up a little. When you’re trying to have a conversation in a language, it’s more than just recognizing what a character looks like to know its meaning. So when the app shows me the tone and then scrolls through writing a character, and then later quizzes me on the definition of a character my brain has to access the information in different ways. This is truly unique. Most apps take you through characters in the same order all the time instead. This app also allows me to focus on one aspect, such as tones only. I find this quite helpful because I have more trouble with tones. And being able to tweak the settings to focus me in ways that I find easiest to learn is awesome. Great job guys. Thank you for all your hard work.

Rawest Squigs ❤️
I’ve been using the old Skritter app for the past two years and I was a bit hesitant to leave that for the new app, but after a few study sessions I’m glad I did. Rawest Squigs has been great for me, making me really confront the characters I don’t know head on without that always tempting first stroke hint (which I shamefully used far too often as a crutch). I love the apple pen support and the more freehand approach to writing the characters as if it were on paper. Overall this has really sped up my review process since I’m not bogged down by drawing each stroke juuuust right. If being able to write Chinese freehand on paper is a goal of yours I’d highly recommend this.

On top of that the new curated lists and video content looks really interesting and I can’t wait to dive into that next. Thank you to the Skritter team for making such an essential Chinese learning app even better!
mewniverse,
Really nice to use
I’m really enjoying using Skritter; I always assumed Chinese characters would be out of reach for me and that I should just learn how to speak, but it’s been surprisingly fun to study using this app. I saw some other comments saying the old app is better, but I used that one for a day, found it somewhat unintuitive, and when I figured out that there was a new version (this listing) I downloaded it and found it to be a much better user experience, personally. The only issue I’ve had so far, to be honest, was figuring out which app to download - I feel like I’m often trying to find the official or genuine version of whatever app I happen to be looking for, so when I saw there were two Skritter apps, I assumed one was a knockoff and downloaded the one with the most reviews. However, they’re both legit and that’s the old version - I’d recommend this one. :)
RedWitchee,
Love This App
I really love this app! It’s very well organized and functionality is superb. Learning the meaning, order of strokes as well pinyin for Chinese characters is really easy with Skritter.
The only suggestion I have, to make the app even better, is to add a tab where we could practice writing the same character over and over again. For an example: having the character and order of strokes at the top of the screen and then the blank square on the rest of the screen, just for practice purposes. As currently the only way to practice is by Due Cards, Continuous or Time Attack features, which only lets you write the character once and then it moves to the next character.
As noted previously I love their app and want to say a big thank you to the Skritter team for making our learning as easy as possible!
TommyApple1,
You'll need it
If you're learning Mandarin I think you pretty much have to use Skritter. These are the main points I care about:

- Huge word database with native voice recordings. This alone makes Skritter way better than Pleco flash cards or Anki decks
- Option to learn both Simplified and Traditional at the same time
- Option to display Zhuyin instead of Pinyin
- Access to the Japanese app with the same account

Once you start adding custom words, you start running into words that don't have audio or an example sentence. The audio is so important for my study flow I just don't bother to add those. This could be a problem eventually, but for now I have my hands full working on HSK 6.

Obviously they can't do the entire language, but I would like to see more effort to improve the database, especially since new app features come out very slowly. I have noticed they're redoing many old audio recordings.

Re: Kelany's review from 3/14, I think beginners could really use a mode that lets you cram your starred words over and over and bypass the SRS. HelloChinese can do that, and I suggest beginners should maybe use both apps together until they get past HSK 3 or so.

The Core of Any Chinese Curriculum
I wish I was using Skritter earlier in my Mandarin learning. Using it as a tool to assist your studying rather than using it as a way to study all by itself is not recommended. Think of it as a way to take the method you’re already using to study to the next level. It’s like dragging a net behind you as you progress through your lessons, making sure that all of the vocabulary stays with you. In my opinion, there’s no better studying supplement on the market. Highly recommended to use in tandem with ChinesePod as they work in synergy (Plus, who doesn’t love Gwilym and Fiona?)

If you guys are ever hiring product managers, please let me know, haha.
MiddleMachine,
The best for learning vocab from real Chinese
Way better than Duolingo or anything else I've tried. The decks I've used in here are made from real Chinese speakers with extremely accurate translations to native English speakers. No broken English or confusing translations.
Settings allow us to turn off and on what we want to study about each word. I don't care about learning each tone at the moment, so I can turn that off. Same with writing; I don't plan on writing Kanji in real life anytime soon, so I can turn that off.
Also, the decks teach us real, common words and sentences that we'd used everyday, unlike other apps that teach us weird non-native phrases.
Every Kanji has info attached to it with the history of the character.
The spaced repetition is great, very similar to Anki for Japanese.
You can also jump straight into other HSK levels besides the first one.
I highly recommend giving this one a try if you've been looking for a better app to learn Chinese than what you've been using right now.

Problematic syncing but still the best
Updates to this new version have finally made it better than the previous version, for me.

Syncing across iPad and iPhone is a bit problematic when rapid swapping, as sometimes I have to rejuvenate the lists multiple times before it gets current progress in sync, but I have yet to find a better app (or even a peer app) for what Skritter does, in terms of being a force multiplier against time.

When parsimoniously paired with Pleco, the study experience is leaps and bounds beyond the way I’ve experienced Chinese taught in schools, to the extent that I now regard the old model as a waste of time.
KelanyM,
Good but not useful
I was very excited with the free trial and became supper excited. Then I paid for the 6 month’s subscription. But soon I realized that the tactics used by skitter are not so great. You can only practice a word once and then it assumes you learned it so you can only practice it in the test. That is very hard. The app also makes it so that you think you know the characters because when you are learning it you see it repeatedly. But that is only because it gives very obvious hints. I believed I was learning but I was not retaining the information. However, Skitter did help me with stroke order and Pinyin. I liked that part of it. I think allowing people to study a character more than once without hints would make the app better.
