⋮ Printed on paper or PDF, your screenplay is indistinguishable from one made with apps costing much more

Fixes for scrambled text, Files app support, and support for Highland files!

This update fixes a rare but nasty issue where text could get scrambled when returning to Slugline from another app. Slugline could also sometimes display gibberish when scrolling through very long documents, which is also now fixed.

1.1.1
2018-03-07
More frequent saving, better Dropbox sync, a crasher fix for Spanish keyboards, and more clarity when deleting files.

There was a rare-but-nasty case where Slugline’s connection to Dropbox could get corrupted. We fixed it, but you may want to disconnect and reconnect Dropbox if you suspect you’ve been affected by this issue.

We fixed a bug where Dropbox documents weren’t auto-saving as often as they should.

Spanish-language keyboards were causing trouble with certain accented characters. Ya no más.

It’s now much harder to accidentally delete a screenplay by swiping left on the filename, because we removed the long-swipe-to-delete gesture. And it’s now more clear where deleted files go: into a Deleted Items folder, where, if you really want to nuke them, you can do so manually.

These updates are all a direct result of your reports and feedback. Thanks for helping make Slugline better!
1.1.0
2018-02-04
Fixes for crashes, better syncing, and easier Character names!

Bug fixes: Based on your feedback, we fixed several (rare, but nasty) crashing bugs, and tuned up sync for both Dropbox and iCloud.

Slugline automatically recognizes Character names when you type them in UPPERCASE. But we felt we could do better, so now Slugline for iOS will recognize any previoulsy-used character, even if you type it in lowercase. Just type the name and press Return, and Slugline will uppercase the name for you and set you up for Dialogue.

We read every review and rapidly respond to every support request, and this update is entirely driven by your feedback. Thanks for helping make Slugline better!
1.0.2
2017-11-23
We’re (still) deeply grateful you jumped right in as an early adopter of Slugline on iOS! This is our second update for reliability and performance, and all these fixes are based on your amazing feedback.

⋮ Less crashing, more saving. No more excuses Ellen Feiss.
⋮ Swiping back from your screenplay should be even better now.
⋮ The Parenthetical button does more of what you’d hope from it.
⋮ Dragging and dropping text within a Slugline document no longer leaves your screenplay in a confused state.
⋮ Margins no longer get borked when returning from other apps.
⋮ The keyboard bar better respects your life choices regarding its visibility.

Here’s what we added in our previous update, 1.0.1:

⋮ Swipe back from your screenplay to the file browser.
⋮ Turn off the extra keyboard buttons if you don't want them.
⋮ Easier to reveal the top bar on iPhone X by tapping anywhere near the top of the screen.
⋮ Keyboard users can use CMD Y for notes and CMD / for omissions.

And here are the 1.0.1 Bug fixes:

⋮ Dropbox and iCloud files save much more frequently as you write.
⋮ Certain kinds of text deletions no longer cause the app to crash.
⋮ Writers who use iOS accessibility should be able to reasonably use speech-to-text now.
⋮ The keyboard buttons are now more readable in very narrow layouts.

We are always grateful when you share your feedback with us, either here by writing a review, or at slugline.co/contact.

Happy writing!

We’re deeply grateful you jumped right in as such an early adopter of Slugline on iOS!

This quick update is a fix for some reliability issues you helped uncover, and is a good excuse to also share a few new features that you’ve requested.

Here’s what’s new:

⋮ You can swipe back from your screenplay to the file browser, like every other reasonable app.
⋮ We added a switch to turn off the extra keyboard buttons if you don't want them.
⋮ It’s now easier to reveal the top bar on iPhone X. Just tap anywhere near the top of that glorious screen.
⋮ If you’re a keyboard user, you can now use CMD Y for notes and CMD / for omissions. If you’re curious what other keyboard shortcuts there are, just hold down the CMD for a moment to see the list.

Bug fixes:

⋮ Dropbox and iCloud files now save much more frequently as you write.

Happy writing!

corymccabe,
I Simply Can’t Rely On it
This hurts me to say, but this iOS version of what Slugline is has been the #1 hindrance of me no longer writing down screenplay thought on the go—which I know is their exact goal.

This app let me down numerous times in saving my screenplays incorrectly, jumbling all of my text around the entire pages, causing me to lose a large percentage of my work. I truly wanted to be patient, knowing fully that development comes with bugs, and maybe I hit a random one-off bug. But issues kept arising, and sadly I simply have lost trust and any faith working in this app.

I am, and have been, an advocate for their macOS app. It’s great and has never let me down. I have zero trust issues with Slugline there.

I don’t want to be too harsh with them as a company and tell the whole world that they’re terrible, because they’re not. They’ve done a lot right. I’ll try this app out again somewhere down the road.

Anyone reading this, note when this was written, because the issues may be fixed and you should feel comfortable giving it a go. :)
SamTheSam,
Fountain Screenwriting on iPad
I’ve been doing my screenwriting in Fountain for about 2 years now, and I’ve used Slugline on my Mac for a great deal of that work. However, my primary writing device is my iPad. The beauty of Fountain is that you can write in any word-processing app, so the lack of a full-fledged Fountain app for the iPad wasn’t a huge hurdle. But it always felt a bit hobbled.

Having used this app for a few hours, I can already say with certainty that this will be my most-used screenwriting app on any platform. Everything that was great about the Mac version is present here: the way the app formats as you type, the clean interface, the easy-to-use outline. And now I have those features on the devices I always have with me, my iPad and iPhone. Well worth the cost.
justinhunt,
Not so much
I write episodic television and have been wanting to find an app that works well while I’m traveling and need to write. I found this one and thought I would give it a try. Although it seemed to be a good fit at first, I have come to loathe this app. Nearly every five minutes or so, it will close down, deleting the last paragraph or two of what has been written. Not only is it frustrating because I have to go back and rewrite what I just wrote, but it absolutely destroys the flow of writing, taking me out of the moment I was creating and forcing me to push refresh on the mental process, trying to get back into that moment. Not to mention it has no memory recall, so you have to fully write out every character name every time you use it, as opposed to it recalling the name after the first character or two like most other scriptwriting programs.

not a fan.

Crazy Jump to Top of Script Issue
I used to love this app, but the last update has driven me to insanity and countless hours of therapy. Now when I type blissfully on the iPad version and the genius oozes out on the page, suddenly out of nowhere the curser jumps to the top of the doc, showing only the cover page info, leaving everything else totally blank (I can still type, but will only see what I typed if I return to the doc screen and then open the file again and then after endless scrolling get to return to the place I left off). This bug has dramatically slowed down my work to the point that I gave up on my dream to use my iPad Pro as a laptop replacement. I shall therefore disappointedly return to the old trusty laptop and fire up the more stable version of Slugline there.
makuznar,
Great writing tool, some *light* feature requests
Hey all at Slugline! This app is awesome. I can seamlessly switch between my MacBook and iPad when writing. Really love the integration with the new magic keyboard for iPad, too!

Only things to improve: User interface looks very “iPhone blown up to be and iPad app.” So, maybe some UI love in a future update?

Other than that, there is an odd issue where I cannot “delete/backspace” while holding the shift key. This is slightly annoying when typing character names. So, if that could be addressed, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Keep it upppppppp
Ronan Jorah,
The best way to work in fountain
A wonderful app for everything from quickly capturing scenes on the go and building outlines to reading and editing feature length scripts. I am very sold on the concept of formatting using fountain in plain text and Slugline on both Mac and iOS is the best way to work this way I’ve found. I would like better organization for the iCloud storage screen, namely folders, but otherwise it’s a near perfect screenwriting tool.
ScottishShads,
Hands down Best Screenwriting app BUT Crashes frequently
Title says it all. Fantastic app. Really I couldnt ask for more in terms of functionality. It is simple, straightforward and doesn’t disturb you from what you should be doing; writing without distractions.

However my app must randomly quit about every 10 minutes or so. I am running it on iPad OS on my iPad Air 2. I do not see any reasons for the system requirements to be too high for it to manage given no other apps are open so must be an issue with the software.

If they fix this it will be an easy 5 star for me, as well as recommendation for all my screenwriting friends. As it stands right now its failing on its basic job of giving you an enjoyable experience writing.
FirstShotTaken,
Give your money to someone else...
I wanted to use Slugline to pick up Highland 2 files when I was on the go. Slugline can’t handle the formatting. It also lost 45 minutes of work when I backed out of the file with no cell service. Unacceptable flaw from the distant past. I asked for a refund through the website and haven’t received a single word of response. For an app that costs $20, you’re better off finding another alternative. I’ve returned to copying my fountain text to Things 3 and writing there. It’s a pain but less so than using Slugline. Can’t recommend. Not answering customers is simply terrible customer service. Give your money to someone else.
FaderCrusader,
The easiest iOS screenwriting experience
I’ve tried several screenwriting apps on iOS, and this is the only one that makes writing on my phone easy enough that I don’t have to think about it.

Writing in Fountain is great, especially on an iPhone where there’s no tab key. The formatting is taken care of with no more effort than a few caps here and there.

And with two taps I’m exporting a PDF copy of the script.
Wrestling?Let'sTalk!,
LOVE IT! But......
Love this app however I’m not sure if anyone else has been experiencing trouble when back spacing. When I hold the back space button for a while it stops and the screen jitters a bit. Also Auto correct can sometimes crash my app, this may just be me and I need to reinstall but if someone can look into this that would be awesome!
