Speech Journal is a customizable voice recorder that lets you pair recorded messages with your own imported images and image sequences.  Uses for Speech Journal include:

- Customized picture sequences
- Multi-step picture schedules
- Multi-step directions
- Articulation drill and carryover
- Expressive language exercises
- Individualized social stories
- Sample conversations
- Personal diary
- Creating family vacation picture albums

Speech Journal can also function as a basic voice output augmentative communication device for children with limited verbal ability.

Any image from your photo album can be imported into Speech Journal. In addition, iPad2 users can use the on-board camera to create new images within the application. Once you have selected an image, you can create a voice recording to go with the image. Once you have completed a recording, you can play, erase, or save the image/recording pair. You may also add more recordings and images to the recording, creating a slideshow. Previously saved recordings may be re-opened and have as many recordings and images added to them as you like.

Speech Journal gives parents and speech language professionals an unlimited amount of flexibility to create speech activities and generate speaking opportunities that best suit the needs of their children.

Klondrick,
Great therapy tool!
As a speech pathologist, I'm always looking for new and improved apps to use with my students. This app has so many potential uses. I have been using it to develop expressive output by downloading meaningful pictures that the student can describe. As they get better with that we move on to combining sentences to describe a meaningful picture scene. You can then proceed to describing multiple pictures to tell a story. It's fun for the kids, especially when you use photos they relate to (like themselves)!

You can also use it for social skills to talk about emotions. The therapist can record a social story related to a picture of the actual student and the child can listen to and talk about it in a meaningful context. Another great activity is taking a picture of the student and having them record how they are feeling and how their facial expression relays that feeling. This gives students with social skills deficits practice in matching non-verbal cues with verbal output. I find the kids love recording and listening to their own voices. It makes therapy dynamic and fun while also supporting the needs of my students.

I, too, am just scratching the surface with this great app! There are so many possibilities. Thanks for another great app!
njschool,
Great for documenting progress!
Ever wish you could pair your own photos and your child’s verbal descriptions in a simple, easy process? Mobile Education’s Speech Journal App allows you to do just that. With an I Pad, you can either take a photo or use one that has been saved to the camera library. Just a few examples of how these customized, highly motivating images can then be used would be sequencing, expressive language exercises, providing directions and explaining procedures, use of appropriate volume and prosody. As with all the other terrific Mobile Education Apps, this one lets you record and play back the child’s responses, so that you can point out just what was done correctly or just what needs to be improved.
spsd 1,
Every SLP needs this!
This app is the most useful, versatile therapy tool you can imagine. In one morning of speech therapy, I used it as a simple voice recorder, as a way to sequence events, as a practice tool for s-blend words, and as an on-the-fly vocabulary teaching tool. In one group, we used it to put together the recipe for our cooking activity, and in another group we put together our own practice conversation for ordering ice cream.

The possibilities really are endless. It is so powerful, so easy to use, and so reinforcing. You can use your own images, or just grab images you need off the Internet, save them and plug them in. In seconds you can have customized materials ready for the situation at hand.

This is wonderful! I will use this all the time.
Patrick's mum,
A Flexible tool from Mobile Education
Like all the Mobile Education Store apps that I have tried this is very well done. Basically you can import any picture you want from your Ipad, then record audio to go with it. Once you have done that the student can listen to it and then record their own audio. So you can use it for speech practice, a video journal, social stories or whatever you imagination comes up with. You can have individual images or link multiple images to form a story or sequence. You can save and email the results. The ability to allow the student to record and playback their own audio is a wonderful motivator - they just love to hear themselves. Good job Mobile Education !
SLP Pam,
Remarkable Program
I am in love with this app and the Mobile Education team. It far surpasses my expectations and the customer service I received was outstanding. I had a problem with some pictures I downloaded from my camera to iPad and Kyle Tomson responded to my email immediately and stayed in contact till my problem was solved. The possibilities are endless with this app. I am using it to teach my speech kids the names of teachers and staff they will be seeing at school. Speech Journal is definitely a must for SLP's and families of special needs children.
Thank you Mobile Education Team.
ewslp,
Has potential
Came across this app in my search for something to use for making social stories or video modeling for autistic students. It has a nice tutorial built in, which is always helpful. What makes this different from all the others is the ability to add either a picture or a voice recording to what you have already made. It also lets you crop photos to use just the portion you need. Creations are easy to email. On the downside ... Once you add a picture to your page, you can't do anything with it like move it or resize it. You also cannot change the order of the pages you have already made. I never did figure out how to create a new student profile to use this with more than one student. If these things are possible, they need to be added to the tutorial.

This is a fabulous app. I love using it with my students to document their narrative skills. It is also great for my students to tell me about their weekend, trips, activities etc. and then I can send an audio to their parents afterwards as not only documentation, but just to let parents know what occurred during therapy. I have also used it personally for when I moved into my new house and wanted to give an audio/visual tour of what my new house looked like. This is one of my most favorite apps and I use it all the time.
rrvjean,
Great App for writing Social Stories
I use Speech Journal to write social stories for my students that are on the ASD specturm. It does a wonderful job. The camera allows me to personallize the stories to the children's individual environements and the recording feature also makes it so the students can work independently with the story. Wonderful tool for any educator. Once again the Mobile Education Store has made a wonderful app.
Vernzilla,
Love it!!
This is the first app I'm REALLY excited about. The only drawback it that I can't share what I set up for my daughter's visual schedule on my iPhone. We just have our iPad occasionally as it's my husband's through work. I wouldn't mind paying to be able to have it on my phone, I just just don't want to have to set up everything twice. Any chance of that happening in the future?
Melovelynn,
Wasted 3.99
I got this app for my son so he could make his own thoughts and recordings and I could send them for him to family members. He has Downs and loves to use his iPad , but even though he has a good vocabulary and a memory like no one else, he never has had the dexterity to write. I thought this would be perfect. So far every time we record it FORCE CLOSES. Completely shuts the whole app down and goes to the home screen on his iPad. We have had it 15 minutes and he had already given up and went to his iPhone to play with SIRI. I don't know how to get a refund as I have never asked for one, but this app is garbage!
