Description

SpeechStickers playfully motivates young children with significant speech delay to practice the basic building blocks of speech. It was designed by a professional speech-language pathologist who specializes in working with children with autism and motor speech disorders such as Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS).

Speech-language pathologists can incorporate SpeechStickers into their therapy. Parents can use SpeechStickers at home to reinforce and supplement the speech skills that their child is working on in therapy.

SpeechStickers should be played with an adult who can monitor the child's progress and provide appropriate feedback on the production of the speech sounds.

Speaking is learned through practice, although not all children acquire this skill at the same rate. Children with speech delay due to motor speech disorders such as childhood apraxia of speech need to be taught the basic patterns of speech through one-on-one sessions with a speech-language pathologist.

Once a child understands how to produce a sound correctly, hundreds of repetitions are often required to master the coordinated oral movements so that the speech pattern becomes second nature. The necessary practice can become tedious for young children.

SpeechStickers encourages and rewards kids for practicing their speech. The therapist/adult begins a session by selecting a target sound to practice. The child chooses one of the five character stickers, places it on the screen, and repeats the sound the character makes. The therapist/adult provides feedback and discreetly scores the child's attempt. Play continues until the child has completed a set of stickers, and the child is then rewarded with their choice of an animation.

- SpeechStickers targets essential early consonant sounds /m/, /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /n/, /k/, /g/, /s/, /z/, /f/, /v/, /ʃ/, /h/, /w/, /tʃ/, /ʤ/, and 12 basic vowel sounds /i/, /ɪ/, /e/, /ɛ/, /æ/, /ʌ/, /u/, /o/, /a/, /ai/, /au/, /ɔi/ in isolation and CV/VC combinations.

- The specific target sound to practice can be selected according to a child's developmental needs.

- The number of trials that a child must produce to earn a reward can be set according to a child's attention span.

- An on-screen progress gauge clearly shows a child how many repetitions they need to complete before receiving a reward.

- A “score to advance” feature allows an adult to provide appropriate feedback, models, modifications, and reinforcement for every sound the child produces in practice.

- The child is in control of their own reward and can select from a drawer full of surprising and amusing animations once they have completed their practice session.

It is our hope that SpeechStickers helps children find their own voice in the world.

This app is designed to be used under the guidance and direction of a certified speech-language pathologist (SLP). Since motor speech disorders and childhood apraxia of speech are communication disorders, the most qualified professional to provide assessment, evaluation and diagnosis is a certified SLP. Parents who are concerned about their child's speech and language development should first seek guidance from a qualified SLP before embarking on any treatment or intervention.

Kelsey SLP,
Update: Would be perfect with all vowel sounds!
Pediatric SLP here, and I have to say this app is so cool! Great for children struggling with speech sound productions, including children with apraxia. The kids I work with ask me all the time to play the "sticker game!" You guys rock!

Edit: Wahoo!! We have a new vowel sound!! I love the new options, but I hope in the future to see /æ/ and /E/ added.

I will still continue to recommend this app, but I hope the developer will consider adding these sounds in the future. Thank you for a great app! You are helping to change lives!
AlineOS,
Best Customer Support
I bought this app for my son who is non verbal. The sound was not working on the iPad. I sent an email at night, and by the time I woke up, I had received a response from Phil (yes, I'm using his first name). He was very professional, and we went back and forth with him asking pertinent questions, and giving me directions on what to try to remedy the problem. We kept at it, until one of his suggestions worked! All the while, I never once felt like he was losing patience, or getting irritated, or feeling like he was wasting his time with some mom. I sent the same email to the customer support of another app (which shall remain nameless) whose sound was also not working, and have yet to hear from them. I have only just started using it with my son, who seems very interested (major first step), so he hasn't gotten very far yet, but all I know is that , if you experience any problems, the company will not be A.W.O.L. Go Phil!

Simple Genius
As an SLP I absolutely love this app. It has motivated my patients to produce various target sounds with excellent repetition that no other activity has. And they are having so much fun! Win-win for everyone, and an outstandingly smart scoring system that not only is functional for the SLP but really helps to motivate the patient because they can not add another sticker until they produce the sound themselves and I score it. I only wish it would include some later developing sounds (e.g. /r/ and /l/) because even my older kids who struggle with those later sounds enjoy this app. Expanding the vowels and expanding to real words would make this the ultimate, go-to app for apraxia, articulation, etc.
Janslp,
Changed a child's life
As a speech language pathologist I tried it with a severely apraxic 3 year old boy. He was so hard to engage in attempting speech sounds but when these characters made the sound, he would try and be rewarded by the charming yet simple graphic action. The first time it happened, he squealed with laughter and his mom ran to the observation window because she thought he was having a crying melt down. He attempted consonants and vowels for the first time that day. Mom left crying!
cpinson,
Speech Stickers
We are loving this app for my 7 year old daughter. It is a great tool for consistency & repetition practice. It just so happens that stickers are one of her favorite things, so it has been very motivating for her. The best thing though is that our private speech therapist, slp at school, & I use it with her in different settings. I like how each of the characters has its own voice. Looking forward to more sound in the future!
JenniferMaryland,
Great app for my 3 year old son with Apraxia
My son is 3 and a half years old and has Childhood Apraxia of Speech. He's currently working on mastering his VC and CV sounds in speech therapy, so this app is a great way to practice his sounds at home. The animations and different voices really help to motivate my son as well. I highly recommend it for young kids with Apraxia who are still working on basic sounds. Great concept, great price.
Apraxiastar,
Love this app!
This application has done wonders for my four year old with apraxia. It is a great practice tool and really holds my child's interest. Our SLP uses it during our sessions, and it is amazing how it has encouraged my child to imitate vowels and consonants. We purchased it to use at home as well, and my child will actually open it up and use it without prompting!
FlowersJ,
Needs more vowels
My pediatric patients really like this app but it needs more vowels and more placement options. Also needs to be for iPad AND iPhone. Please consider adding all vowel sounds as an update and possibly making it available for more than just the iPad. I use my phone a lot during therapy sessions because a lot of young children can manipulate it and hold it easily.

Overall, good app and would recommend purchasing it to parents and other therapists.
Tawni Miller,
My clients love this app!
This is one of my most used apps in therapy. It's so basic but very motivating. Some of my younger kids have a hard time with the girl/boy stickers...calling them mama or dada. Would be good to not have human stickers...maybe have more characters. Also more vowel options, all consonants available, & expand to CVC'S & true words.
Manda20 sweetie,
Wonderful
Great app! As an SLP working mainly with preschoolers it's perfect! Very engaging for the kids and user friendly for me! I love that it's difficult for the kids to change accuracy levels and adjust settings designed for the SLP. I would like to see /f/ added to the list of phonemes. Please create more apps like this one!
