Description

Come and join Spellyfish the jellyfish on a fun underwater spelling and reading adventure! The adorable and friendly Spellyfish will help your child learn phonics and the primary letter sounds and letter names for the alphabet. Spellyfish will also teach your child how words can be broken up into separate sounds and how the letter sounds can be blended together to form short words.

Your child will also learn how to recognize both the lower case and upper case letters of the alphabet. In addition he/she will learn about the starting sounds of words and how the ending sounds of words can make some words rhyme with each other.

Spellyfish 'A' words is aligned with the US Common Core State Standards for building foundational skills in reading for Kindergarten.

It teaches the critical phonological and phonemic awareness skills children need for obtaining literacy in both reading and spelling.

Your child will learn how to spell consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words that contain the letter 'A' and the short /a/ sound. This includes words such as cat, sat, van, etc.

Recommended ages: 4-6

Dasmm,
Spellyfish
This is a great app for emerging readers. It takes some adult involvement to get the settings right as well as to go over the instructions for using the app. Once the spelling begins it is very user friendly for a young child. The word to picture associations are very clear, along with the sounding out of each letter sound by spellyfish. I hope that this app is developed further with the addition of more words and extensions to the learning.
This app is also good for multiple users and saves their progress for easy assessment.
Frances Amato,
Amazing Spelling App... YAY for Spellyfish!
I think Spellyfish - Short A Words is an amazing app. That is extremely user-friendly and has a nice ease of use for children. Children quickly took to the app playing and having fun. I absolutely love the use of the jellyfish as an animation that is friendly children. I also like that whenever a child gets an answer correct, there was a positive reinforcement such as the jellyfish glow and says "fantastic". I love that the app teaches children in a word family/rhyming order. Each time a child finishes a list it tells them how many words they got correct, then they go to the next list of words.

Overall, I think Spellyfish is absolutely amazing fun and engaging app. In my opinion it is an essential app to have if you are an educator, parent or professional especially since this app can be used by 40 users at a time! This app will definitely help your children to increase their Sight Words knowledge, teach phonological awareness and have children learning their CVC words at an amazing rate.
mom2alexthegr8,
This app is amazing!!
This app will keep your child engaged, with the friendly character, Spellyfish! Your child will learn phonics, at the same time as learning how to spell CVC words that contain the short /a/ sound and the letter "A". The app is loaded with features: every word is paired with an illustration, words are presented in context, the app supports up to 40 user accounts, there is data tracking, and so much more! This app is appropriate for special needs children due to the visual and verbal prompts, larger keyboard, engaging visuals, engaging character, and many of the options in the app! My own son played with app independently for almost an hour! It is kid tested and mom approved! There are no links, ads, or in-app purchases. I highly recommend it!
lynngus,
Love this app for short a CVC words!
Not only are players asked to spell a word that is stated, that word is also used contextually to aid in identification. The word is sounded out as the player taps letters on the keyboard and there is opportunity to self-correct when a word is misspelled. The player doesn't have to wait for the context clue to spell the word which allows for self-pacing nor do they have to follow the order of lists; s/he can choose which list of words to work on. This is a great app for the price--hope they continue developing apps for other word families!
Pererau,
Great practice with spelling!
Overall, my six-year-old did very well with the lessons, and even commented that they were too easy. She may think that, but I think this app affords her wonderful practice, both with spelling and learning and *knowing* her lowercase letters. The app was beyond the grasp of my almost 5-year-old, but once she learns her letters better and knows their locations on the keyboard, I think this will be a great app for her. Well done!
Reading Buddies,
Great app to teach short 'a' sound
This app is beautifully designed for teaching Consonant Vowel Consonant words that contain the short 'a' sound. You can customize settings, including volume, letter case, times to mastery and keyboard layout. You can add up to 40 users, making this a great app for teachers. Progressive hints, audio and visual cues, provide access and ensure success for every child. The only drawback is that it just teaches one sound.
SD_SLP,
Great App, but One Sound Focus
This was a great app and with the use of technology within most school districts these days, I think this would be a huge benefit to kindergarten teachers or parents of kindergarten students. The graphics in the app are fantastic. The way in which the jellyfish leads the user through the word knowledge is incredible. The letters, when sounded out, help to solidify simple letter knowledge, which benefits future spelling situations!
Wagnerslp,
Nice Spelling App!
Spellyfish - Short A Words is a fun way for kids to practice building CVC words containing short a. With clear instructions prior to game play, and excellent graphics, children will be engaged in learning to spell words. I like how the user can press a letter and hear the sound it makes. Very nicely done app! I would like to see the addition of more CVC words with the other vowels for a more robust app! Recommended!
MoFromCT,
Short i is out...just waiting for the rest!
I've been using this short a app with my reading intervention groups. I'm planning to buy the short i version which just came out. If the short i is as good as the short a, there's not doubt that I'll be buying the rest. Thank you!
Gals90,
Great app to teach A sound in CVC words
As a kindergarten teacher I love this app for teaching about the letter A in CVC words. The setting options included in this app only increase the value of this app. It is a app that can grow with your child's ability. Hoping that they make apps for the other vowels in the near future.
