Description

Symphony Pro 6 is a complete and intuitive app for writing music notation on iPad. It allows you to compose music for just about any size ensemble, from piano, symphonies, band, lead sheets, chord charts, guitar tabs, and more.

Starting Version 5, Symphony Pro now offers handwriting recognition as the only in-app purchase: Perfect with Apple Pencil, and works great with touch or capacitive stylus

GETTING STARTED

SP provides all of the key options to begin your work. Import a score via MusicXML, MXL, MIDI, or SP file from your computer, or from apps like Dropbox, Mail, iCloud Drive, or Safari. You can base your project on a template, or start a blank score and add additional parts later.

EDITING

To add notes, choose Pencil mode, and tap anywhere on a bar to begin editing right away. You can quickly specify note properties before or after placing notes. By switching to Select mode with one touch, you can also transpose, erase, cut, and paste multiple notes/tracks.

With an on-screen instrument, a QWERTY keyboard, or Core MIDI compatible keyboard, you can quickly enter notes & chords in step entry mode. Record a part in real-time with on-screen instruments to transcribe into notation.

Versions 4 & 5 take greater advantage of the iPad touchscreen. With shortcuts and contextual menus to edit note & bar properties, many of the commonly used editing commands are right at your fingertips.

SP supports a wide range of notational elements for your composition. Including dynamics & articulations, time & key signature changes, clef changes, pedals, and repeat conventions. Edit chord symbols, lyrics, and annotations using the iPad’s standard keyboard.

EXPORT & SHARE

When you’re finished, print out your score with AirPrint, or export it as a PDF, MusicXML, AAC, MIDI, or Symphony file. Share files via email or directly to another computer or iPad via Dropbox/iCloud Drive.

Spe42,
Impressive, but serious flaws
It is a very impressive package, considering all the features that are built into the app. Was somewhat disappointed when, immediately after purchasing, I navigated to the in-app user manual, clicked on "submit feature request", and the app immediately crashed. When I then went to submit a crash report—the app crashed again. Notwithstanding, I am very impressed with the sheer volume of keystroke shortcuts to use the features—and since I am using an ipad keyboard case, this works well for my needs. However, as other reviewers have noted, the note input method is an incredible nuisance. Compared to what else is available on the ipad, and what reviewers are generally saying about them, Symphony Pro seems to my way of thinking yet the most reliable. All the music notation apps seem to have very compromising errors in their functionality, and not much in the way of signs of improvement (judging by what reviewers are saying, that is). Considering what's available, this is of very good quality.
All nicknames taken42103,
Amazing! It’s all fixed and improved!
So, before this long overdue update, a lot of my projects were glitchy— unreliably glitchy. I’d have all sorts of weird problems with no workarounds. HOWEVER, with this new update, I have gone through my old projects, and there are absolutely no glitches! That alone merits five stars from me, but there’s more.

It’s all seamless now. PDF export is perfected. There’s tons of customization options and features. I haven’t even had time to look into all the workflow improvements and Core MIDI implementations. I did a MIDI export on one of the example projects to test, and it cranked out a long, detailed six-track MIDI file with tempo and velocity variation with no problems at all. Of course, there are tons of things I haven’t tried, but I haven’t seen ANY bugs so far. None! Not on iPhone, not on iPad. It’s perfect, as far as I can tell.

With this update, I believe Symphony Pro has solidified itself as the greatest scoring app on iOS. The only IAP is for handwriting recognition, which works as awesomely as everything else, by the way. Xenon Labs just gave me a last-minute Christmas gift, and I feel giddy.
Lo-Jay,
It’s getting there...
As of writing this review, I would say that Symphony Pro is still one of the leading tablet notation apps, competing with Notion and, if you like handwriting apps (I don’t) NotateMe. That said, it still pales in comparison to some of the fundamental features of the desktop name-brand softwares. One thing Symphony Pro attempts to do right is its plethora of QWERTY keyboard shortcuts. Definitely a step in the right direction, but still lacking in the most important area - initial note entry. I recognize that tablets are built around the idea of touch notation and handwriting, but a huge game-changer would be adding support for proper QWERTY note entry wherein you type the letter name of the pitch you want and then use shortcuts to tweak the octave and accidentals. This is a central feature that any power user of Sibelius or Finale is used to. If such a feature were integrated, my rating for Symphony Pro would easily be 4 or 5 stars, as no mobile app currently entices me to rely on it for notation. While SP has an impressive range of detailed features, it would offer the most ‘bang’ for its ‘buck’ if it were to improve the way I enter my notes when using a keyboard with my iPad.
corvo di bassetto,
useful tool
This app is very useful for writing music on the i-pad. Recent upgrades have improved various editing features. It doesn't support micro intervals, advanced articulation marks and struggles with complex rhythms, hence it's not good for Brian Ferneyhough. But it is fine for 99% of classical and jazz arrangements. Really nice working with the i-pen.
Unfortunately, while it originally featured some pretty useable, plain sounds, the most recent update abolished them in favour of the cheesy, infantile gimmick sounds known and dreaded from cheap keyboards. The beautiful celesta and old style synth sounds are gone, and the grand piano is unusable, because even if you remove all extra reverb it still sounds like recorded in an empty church from 100 yards away. Why?? Are we all supposed to be toddlers? The app would be useful for professional musicians using a mobile device, but from now on only with muted sound, as a typing pad.
Boahaha,
Best music notation app for an ipad
I have just purchased this app and was asked many times to write a review from the beginning but just ignored those prompts until I tried most of the features (Including the in app purchased handwriting add on). The hand writing and selection using the apple pencil made music notation much faster and intuitive!!

I still haven’t tried writing music using a midi keyboard yet, but all other features are solid and versatile. Did a lot of research on alternative apps and this one is defiantly the best bang for the buck.

The use of QWERTY keyboard is super useful and intuitive once you read the shortcut list. However I would recommend the developers adding a feature of inserting the note pitch directly from the keyboard (typing c would insert a C and typing F would insert an F... and so on). Currently you can type C to insert a note and then transpose it using up and down arrows to get the desired pitch.
ZipArts,
Very Impressive – I am in awe of what has been accomplished!
CONTEXT: I am a (retired) professional musician, (recovering) arts administrator, with a PhD in music theory and finally enjoying arranging and composing on my own terms. I am a (terminally frustrated) Finale owner/user since back when that program was ground-breaking, with heart-stopping innovation and price point.
SETUP: I use an iPad Air 2 with a generic Bluetooth stylus, external keyboards, both typing (love those shortcuts!) and music. (Just recycled an old NanoKeys via the new apple camera/USB 3 connector).
PRAISES: The functionality vs. price point is insane! This is an app for serious musicians, but is like a Swiss Army Knife in it’s approach: LOTS of different ways to get the job done! For example, the very “natural” stylus input alone is worth the price. The design throughout is obviously related to all musician’s practical needs, rather than programmer single-mindedness.
SUMMARY: This is now my go-to creative platform. No more Finale updates for me! I will only continue to use that dinosaur for playback of higher quality sounds. The learning curve is high only because of all the working modes, from sketching ideas, developing material, to EASY (even fun) detailed/tedious editing tasks.
Please keep at it folks–even if you do not make a bundle of money.
PS This is my very first music product review. Hope it helps.
nonparrishable,
Needs improvement for MacOS version, but generally love this program
I am a professional harpist and arrange much of my own music for gigs, performances, and for my students. I did a lot of research into music writing programs that would work best for my needs. I have been using the app on my iPad for a few months now and love it. I checked recently again to see if there was a version for the computer and was happily surprised! There are a few issues with the Mac version I have noticed so far:

- The biggest issue is every time I select a note or range of notes, I get the menu for the note popping up. I have changed the keyboard shortcut for these to an obscure key so that it wouldn't happen, but I keep having this issue. I can't get the menu to go away. I am aiming to be able to type directly in and create scores efficiently, and this makes that hard if not impossible. They are also hard to click away from.

- Menu colors - the menu colors: (Open score, etc) when they are on the dark blue background, the text is also a darker blue so the text isn't legible

These are my observations so far. I will continue using the program and exploring this new platform! I will also be continuing to use it on my iPad for sure. Happy to give more feedback as improvements are made. So excited this is available on the computer now!
mitriv,
Impressive App but really annoying problems that should be easy to resolve
The hand writing feature works great until you’re trying to create several layers (a classical guitar score for example). I think its absurd that if you’re done with a voice or layer and then you’re trying to create a new one with the Apple Pencil the system detects some of your inputs as if you were trying to edit the voice that is already finished and is not even selected. This a huge problem.

Another thing is that it should be a way to block the handwriting with your fingers if you’re already using the Apple Pencil. It happens a lot that you wrote something with the pencil and then try to scroll the score with the fingers and the app write something you didn’t want. I think this would be easily corrected if we had an option to use JUST the Apple Pencil for writing notes and select tools, and the fingers for all other gestures like zoom and scroll.
Tator--salad,
It’s good, until it’s not.
This is probably the best app you’ll find for iPad as far as music notation. The problem is the app seems to have been forgotten by the devs. There are many bugs like the lyric tool always bugs out and crashing the app. It will glitch and change notes that have already been put in the score leading to a substantial chunk of time fixing notes that have been changed by what seems to be some bug. The manual and help tabs in app both don’t work. It’s still accessible online though.

All that being said, note input is fast and easy. There’s a learning curve like any music notation software and often it’s difficult to find answers in the manual. I’ve found that forums on their website are helpful.

I’m giving three stars because it could have potential and what’s there is OK. It’s just not a great app because of all the bugs.
G000girl,
Great for anyone who likes writing music.
I waited awhile to finally get a good scoring program. I had my eye on this one for some time. I upgraded to the iPad Pro with Pencil and finally purchased SymphonyPro. What a great combination. I also opted for the in-app purchase to let SymphonyPro recognize my handwriting. You can use the Pencil without this option, but I particularly enjoy using the Pencil to cut and paste. With just a little bit of time you can make professional looking scores with this software. It’s so quick and easy. For anyone that has used pencil and score paper, you’ll really enjoy this. Mistakes are easily corrected. And note entry is easy, whether you use the Pencil, your finger, or a MIDI keyboard. So if you’re looking for a way to jot down your musical ideas, this is it.
