Description

* WE'VE RELEASED A NEW & IMPROVED VERSION OF SYNTORIAL IN THE APP STORE. JUST SEARCH "SYNTORIAL 2" *

Syntorial is a synthesizer training app, that will teach you how to program synth patches by ear. By combining video demonstrations with interactive challenges, you’ll get hands on experience programming patches on a built-in soft synth, and learn everything you need to know to start making your own sounds with ease.

"Syntorial is the most direct route between hearing a sound in your head and knowing how to bring it to life." - Electronic Musician Magazine

"The most comprehensive and fun tool for learning synthesizer programming, hands down." - Keyboard Magazine

“The best training in synth sound-design we’ve come across. A unique and fun way to train your ears in re-creating synth sounds.” - MusicTech Magazine

* Electronic Musician Editor's Choice 2014 *

HIGHLIGHTS

• Interactive Learning: Syntorial doesn’t just show you how synth programming works. It engages you in Interactive Challenges in which you program patches on a built-in synth. You aren’t just learning how to design sound, you are becoming a sound designer.

• For Musicians, Not Physicists: Instead of talking about the science and physics behind synthesizers, Syntorial will show you how each control effects sound, as well as when, why and how you would use them when designing sounds. This is information that you can immediately apply to real-life situations.

• It's All About The Ear: One step at a time, Syntorial trains your ear to recognize how each control shapes and manipulates sound. By the end of the program you’ll be able to take the sounds you hear and re-create them, completely by ear.

LESSON SPECS

• Challenges: Learn by doing! Complete challenges by programming patches with Syntorial’s built-in synth.

• Videos: Everything is taught through video demonstrations using the same synth that you’ll use in the challenges.

• Patches: Program, program, program. After all, that’s what it’s all about, right? By the end you will have programmed tons of patches, from simple to complex, familiar to strange.

• Quizzes: Multiple choice questions to help you retain and remember everything you learn.

• On Your Own: Syntorial will give you periodic tasks to be carried out on your own with whatever synth(s) you use.

Bug fix: With the release of iOS 14.4, lesson videos started hiding the interface around them, stranding users in the video with no way to get out. For some unknown reason, displaying the status bar at the top of the app prevents this bug. It's kind of ugly, and overlaps the Syntorial interface a bit, so this will be removed in the near future.

Bug fix: Intermittent crash after logging in and answering "yes" to "Can we collect usage information?" We've fixed this bug by no longer collecting usage information.

• New feature: Preset exporting. From the Preset menu, select "User Presets", and then tap "Export" at the bottom. You'll then be able to access the latest version of your presets via the Files app on your iPad, or iTunes File Sharing on your computer.
• Bug fix: Bluetooth headphones were only receiving a mono signal from the synth. Now it's stereo.
• Few additional minor bug fixes.

User Presets and Favorites are now shared between Syntorial and Primer. NOTE: If you already have presets in User Presets or Favorites you must update Syntorial, go into the Menu, and select "Launch Synth" before they'll show up in Primer. This will copy them over to the shared location where Primer can access them. This only has to be done once.

- The last version was crashing in iOS 12. This version isn't. #magic
- Removed IAA and Audiobus support. Don't be mad! We'll be releasing a new app called "Primer" very soon, which will be the exact same synth used in Syntorial. Except this puppy will also be an App Extension, which you can open in Audiobus, Garageband, and any other App Extension-compatible app. Trust us when we say this is better, as you'll be able to open up unlimited Primers in one session, as opposed to being limited to just one Syntorial. That's why you shouldn't be mad. #behappy

Brittany_KL,
Fantastic!
I’m a complete beginner to synth, and have been interested for a very long time to learn. Syntorial has made this possible! When learning it goes such a long way to actually be able to work through the steps and apply it yourself, which is exactly what this is. The way this enables you to learn different areas and focus solely on that at one time (while also showing you how well you’re doing) is so incredibly helpful to really grasping all the different areas of sound. Just amazing. I’m only about 20% percent through the lessons, and have already learned so much to apply to playing synth and creating patches. I’ve gained such a valuable foundation, and with 150+ more lessons to go. Absolutely well worth the money. Thank you SO much for creating Syntorial!!
Will 62054,
great synth ear training, useful explanations
I am still quite new to synthesizers, and many synth enthusiasts talk about terms and parameters that are way over my head. A lot of this app is designed for you to use your ear to reproduce patches, which is something that I needed a lot of practice with.

I have heard there is a 2.0 version in development, and I have a few suggestions for improvement. (These may have been addressed already, I’m not sure)

On iPad the transition between the tutorial videos and the interactive sections is not seamless. The videos default to full screen, and when it finishes, you have to swipe in order to go out of full screen, and you only have a second to select the challenge button to proceed before it goes back to full screen again.

The tutorials gradually build up the amount of parameters in each patch by adding one section at a time. Certain groups are more challenging than others. I think it would be great in the future if the user could enable/disable certain sections to focus on what they need to practice on. From the middle of the tutorials towards the end, the amount of parameters can get a little overwhelming.

I did purchase the full content on sale, but I think the value is quite excellent, and there are not many products out there that are comparable for interactive synth learning!
nole61,
What a digital tutorial should be
Syntorial is the best computer based learning tutorial I have ever used, bar none. Being a 60 year old programmer, that’s saying something!

It takes you through a synthesizer (included) control by control, training your ears to recognize what each sound wave modification sounds like, by using a gradually expanding set of tools to match a sound you hear. This both trains your ear (to recreate sounds you hear), while it increases your ability to create sounds by knowing what each part of a typical synth does.

Yeah, it’s $130, but it beats paying more for various other ways to learn synthesis and not getting the same results (knowledge), only to try another one.
danispada,
That's it!
If you want to learn synth sound design from the bottom up with all knobs and functions, recognize and recreate the coolest sounds, this is the app for you.
I tried different books and watched I don't know how many instructional videos, but never got much further than what already figured out on my own. Sometimes, I even got more confused with the over theoretical explanations that did not help me sound better.
This app is the real deal because it is a series of progressive exercises dealing with all options generally available on old analog, digital and computer synthesizers.
CBLSF,
This is the BEST!!
I'm so grateful for this app (and to the developers who've made it!) - as a guitarist I've gotten really into the amazing world of iOS music making and there are a lot of synths! If you want to actually understand how to use the controls within synths and to make your own sounds (and just understand the sounds you're hearing better) then this is so worth the investment. I'm really enjoying the well made tutorials and challenges, Everything is very user friendly, well thought out and well laid out. Bravo!
cspaggy,
Upgrade price is insane
I was really loving the synth tutorials. I am learning alongside my 12 year EDM fan and we were really digging the lessons and learning a bunch. Then we got to the end of the free lessons and WHAM!!!! $129 to continue!!! As much as we love your lessons and teaching style, there is just no way we could justify spending so much to continue. So sorry because we absolutely loved this. Maybe you should offer price tiers. One price for the basic lessons, another for the lesson packs for Serum and Massive (which we don’t need), and another for PC/Mac access and the plugin. I’m a software product manager with years of experience and offering all or nothing bundles is a sure way to lose customers. Wish you had some lower price points to continue with more lessons.
PaulyVinyl,
Great tool for learning synth sound design
This tool is fun and a great way to learn synth principles.
20 free lessons is great but making you spend $129 to proceed past further is prohibitive although worth it to get the additional 179 lessons but way too much at once on a students budget, it would be great to have an option to pay $0.99 per lesson after the initial 20 free lessons, i would be more than happy to pay on a per lesson basis or a even 10 or 20 lesson packs. You would gain far more paying customers with that option. If you had that I would give a full five stars but I guess I’ll just get my free 20 lessons and then remove the app 😞
IsaiahGray,
Just Completed Free Lessons; Bought Immediately
Very stoked to dive deep into these lessons. I was very pleased with the free lessons because it was exactly what I was looking for. The app is extremely practical and trains you to use your ear almost identically to how a guitarist or keyboardist trains there ear to learn their instrument. 12/10 recommend for any upcoming synth geeks and music producer. Thank you Syntorial for this masterpiece.

Ps I don’t even write reviews but somehow this app has motivated me to do so. Take what you may from that
Bangerjangers,
Wonderful
I’ve spent time messing around with softsynths and never felt like I really got anywhere. This app is well organized and straight-forward, exactly what I needed. One small suggestion would be the additional of more problems in the quizzes or a separate “drills” function to assess randomly-generated patches. I’ve found that trying to recreate the patches solely by ear to be the most helpful part of this app by far.

Overall, if you’re trying to learn synthesis, this has been the best resource I’ve found so far.
Smopitt,
So good
Legit never took the time to write a review before. This app is so useful and helpful I felt compelled. It’s exactly what I was looking for and then some. Primer is an excellent learning synth and the narrator hits every bit of it and provides incredible instruction, reason, and tips to boot. When I got a little more advanced(after months of getting at it) I downloaded Massive and have started on those tutorials. I just can’t say enough good stuff about this software.
