Needs work
I can appreciate that there is a lot to consider when building an app, but I really struggle to use this one effectively. For starters, customizing the UI for readability is extremely limited. I use the app on an iPad in landscape mode and the columns are not consistently sized. I would turn the iPad to portrait, but it would disconnect the keyboard.
Getting the gist of articles in the smallest column on the right requires me to open each article just to know what it’s covering. There’s plenty of space for advertising, but there’s no discernible section for providing feedback on each article, which is really important to me. Allowing for public discourse is a great way to engage readers and increase readership. It also gives the editorial folks an idea of what subscribers are looking for. Cater to your audience and subscriptions will increase. Without the option for public discourse people will be less interested in what is being published, and subscriptions will continue to decrease.
So, a complete overhaul of the UI is in order. If you can pull this off and make the app more accessible (customizable, intuitive, encouraging of feedback, AND equally useful to those with special needs), then you will have made a great app. What you’re offering misses the mark, but I’m looking forward to significant improvements.

Restore the replica version
For whatever reason, the replica (E-Edition) version was dropped with the last upgrade to the Daily Oklahoman. I’ve been a customer for over 50 years. I was even sent the paper when overseas. Since those times, I’ve seen the paper shrink twice in size, shrink significantly in content, drop the separate TV schedule and sky rocket in price. For the last several years, I’ve been reading the paper on an iPad since the paper doesn’t arrive until 9-10am. Now, you’ve dropped the e-edition or replica edition. Now it’s just scattered articles - news, sports, business - with no organized sections. Either restore the replica edition or I cancel my subscription, like everyone else seems to have done. PS - Your Subscription ladies, who talk to customers, are the most uncaring, rude employees I’ve ever spoken with. Graham Robertson The Village

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it
Your recent changes to the digital paper is horrible. Before, I easily navigated getting the paper & reading it. Going from page to page was intuitive.
Now, I have to jump through hoops & have to restart loading it a couple of times, then never know what I’m going to get. The simple way of enlarging the type is gone. In the middle of reading the paper, sometimes it jumps to a mega enlargement & I can’t figure out how to reduce it. So I have to scroll horizontally to read it. The whole thing is so buggy that I’m sitting here angry from the git go.
The arrow to the next page sits so close to something in a right-hand column that I have to be extremely careful where I put my finger, or all is lost. I end up where I don’t want to be & start from scratch again.
I don’t know where you got your programmers, but suggest you try someone with more than a third-grade education. I’m seriously contemplating just giving the paper up…canceling my subscription.

Disappointing on Three Levels
Level 1: The fact that there is no Search function in an online edition is tremendously disappointing. I’ve used for years this function for research. This forces me to use use a desktop computer for an searching of past stories. I am relieved to find the E-Edition, so I can read the comics and the editorial cartoons, but I feel that these should be in the navigation menu.

Level 2: I’m disappointed in the lack of coverage of OKC Energy FC professional soccer team. Not everyone in this town cares about college and high school sports or the NBA and NFL. Heck, there’s even dismal coverage of the Dodgers. Sure, they’re “just” a farm club, but they’re all we have for professional baseball in OKC.

Level 3: The corporate consolidation of the news industry. I’m not a fan of having so few gatekeepers of our information. And I’m not a fan Gatehouse Media.

Very Unappetizing
The experience of reading a “paper” version of a newspaper was something I reluctantly gave up when the prices for delivery sky rocketed. I assume this was done to push subscribers to the more cost effective digital version. But at least I could still read the paper in many of the same ways I used to in the E-Edition or Print version. Now they changed the format completely. I am frustrated mentally sorting out “fresh” news from items I’ve read in past days or maybe skipped from past days. In the past my eye would catch an article on a topic in the “real” paper that I wouldn’t ordinarily be interested in but after reading the 1st few lines it would capture my attention. In this new format I find myself saying “skip this and skip that” so I leave the experience still feeling hungry for news and uninspired by the experience. Makes me think of the Don McLean song, “The Day The Music Died”
Vader Boy,
Delivery
I last received a newspaper on Wednesday March 11,2020. Have called as of today 3 or 4 times with no results. Today’s call made me feel like it really didn’t matter whether I continued or cancelled & that I had not communicated but 1 time not multiple times & it was my own fault I haven’t gotten my deliveries. There were other comments by the person which made me feel stupid & that I was lying about calling. My neighbor told me he had called as well with no results. He looked & found our delivery guys number only to be told he had quit. I was made to feel my communication skills were the problem. I believe the rep for the Oklahoman has communication issues as well as her tone.
I enjoy getting the paper & hope delivery starts up again soon.
Thankyou
📷 📱,
Horrible app!
This app has always been horrible, but with this new update, it has gotten 10 times worse! If you are curious about downloading this and paying for the subscription, save your money and look elsewhere! It’s just awful! I have been reading the paper since the early 60s as a kid. I enjoy the digital replica version, but it is nowhere to be found on the updated app. A call to customer service was a complete waste of time as the customer service lady is in the Philippines or somewhere over that way and was clueless about the replica version! Really a stupid way to run a newspaper! All I want is the digital replica version, but no one seems to be able to tell me how to get it and it is not in the App Store. If they cannot fix this in the next day or two, I will be canceling my subscription immediately!
Oklahoma Joe,
Horrible “upgrade”
So for a few days I have been going to the website and reading the E-edition there. Now this mornings I can still see the print replica but can’t double click on an article and scroll through the entire paper. Now we have to drag the paper around and zoom in to read the article itself. Did someone point out to your geniuses in marketing that people had discovered a work around? Did they decide well let’s screw that experience up for them as well?
Look, I realize that the free press is important. I know we need investigative journalism. So why are you trying to shoot yourselves in the foot here? It’s like you want to ruin your business. I can’t believe this is a cost saving measure. It must be just sheer bad management and leadership.
Bring back the old app and truly upgrade it.

The Oklahoman Keeps Real Journalism Alive
Still employing some of the columnists from maybe even the broadsheet days, “The” Oklahoma City paper lives in physical and internet access form. While not totally a stand alone local paper, there are enough local elements to make The Oklahoman a better read than USA Today, for instance. The “Food Dude” will keep you up to date on the local dining and entertainment scene, while sports columnists cover our beloved teams plus more. It is easy to read from the internet app or you can still get a real paper.
dandk'sfamily,
Functionality nonexistent but looks pretty
The scheme, colors and pictures are great. However, 85% of the time the articles won’t open. Get a notification of breaking news, click on it and the article won’t load. Open the app and try to load an article. Won’t load. The navigation is poor also because you never know which articles you have read (if you are lucky enough to get one open) and which are left. Appreciated the print replica of the previous version because I know what I had read and what was left. Also could read offline. Poor execution. Very frustrated that this is what I get for paying for local news.
