Description

Guitar Player Magazine says: "This ingenious super metronome was developed by funky-as-hell Sco sideman Avi Bortnick. It will leave out beats randomly to force you to strengthen your own inner time-keeping muscles, and it has other cool features for odd meters, drum machine-style patterns, and more... this is an awesome learning, grooving, solidifying tool."

Strengthen your inner sense of rhythm! Time Guru is the only metronome with the ability to mute its sound at random, in sequenced patterns, or both, so that you can assess whether you tend to rush or drag or loose your place with odd meters. Time Guru can periodically leave you on your own so that you strengthen your own internal sense of time, rather than relying on the constant, rigid, external time keeping of a metronome. It's like training wheels that sometimes come up off the ground.

Time Guru also features:
-the ability to play in different time signatures or sequences of time signatures
-create rhythmic drum-machine like patterns
-save presets for tempo, meter, sound and muting-
-35 loud sound sets;
-Human or robot voice counting in English, Chinese, French, German or Russian - great for teaching!
-tap tempo (5 to 300 BPM range)
-super accurate, rock-solid timing via a customized audio engine.

And of course it can function as a normal metronome.

NoTreble.com says: "I love the aesthetic and layout of Time Guru. It’s very simple and elegant. Time Guru also offers ability to set randomness of your subdivisions (great for testing your internal clock)….There is one thing that Time Guru does that I absolutely love, and for which, this app will always live on my iPhone – at the top of the screen, you will see a series of numbers (1-7). When you press a number, it is set first in a sequence and you can choose a subdivision that will then repeat that number of times (or set it to rest that number of times). Sound confusing? It isn’t, because the layout is so simple. Every time you press a new number, it is set next in the sequence and you choose your continue to choose your subdivisions."

Best trainer for subdivision accuracy.
If you have always had trouble placing your inner subdivisions, this is the key. I was always getting the downbeats in time but my subdivisions were erratic. Not any more. Your brain is forced to fill in the missing gaps.

Totally worth it. The only thing I don't like is the tap function has too much latency for accurate tempo reads. I have to turn the volume completely off to tap a tempo accurately, then turn the volume back on.

This is still worth it. Absolutely the best for subdivision training.

Wonderful Metronome and Extremely Customizable
To say first - if you haven’t heard Avi Bortnik (the developer) play, check him out. It’s plain to see that he has spent plenty of time thinking about rhythmic ideas, how to listen, and how to fit everything into the pocket with other musicians.

All of those ideas translate wonderfully into this metronome. It can be used in a traditional manner (click on every beat), or can be customized for different time signatures, to add extra beats within a time signature, and to drop the click on random beats. The latter is an extremely helpful tool to strengthen one’s inner sense of groove. To round everything out, there are many click sounds available to suit your taste and pair well with whatever instrument that you may be playing.

All in all, this is an extremely well thought out and original imagining of what a metronome can be. If you’re looking at metronome options, this is an amazing place to invest $2! Thank you, Avi! This tool has certainly been a great help in my rhythmic studies.

One of a Kind
This metronome has a few features that no other metronome provides, namely the random muting and being able to create any rhythm. A few features that I would like to see in future updates are:

1. The ability to rearrange the rhythms created in the meter select area. Currently, if there are multiple meters selected and I want to change the order, I have to delete them and start again. I would like to be able to drag one meter and place it somewhere else in the line up.

2. A menu for different rhythmic units. Instead of having to cycle through in decreasing order of duration, I would prefer to open a menu with all available note values to save time when trying to select the right value.

3. 32nd notes! Currently, the shortest note value is the 16th septuplet. It would be nice to just add one more value and get the 32nd note.

4. More control over the sounds of strong and weak beats. Currently, there are a lot of options for different timbres, but there is no way to change the sound of beats 1 and 2, for example.

Hopefully the developers will be able to continue the innovation that this metronome has already demonstrated.
nOoMeLoDy,
Great app but could be more user friendly
This app solves issues no other one does that I’m aware of so it is indispensable in that regard and for that I will give it 5 stars but I hope the developers will provide more of a help section or supply the app with some optional basic preset profiles to start someone off. If you already are someone that tinkers with things without manuals, you’ll find your way around quickly. Mainly writing this for those a bit less tech savvy out there. Intuitiveness of app can be improved but app is definitely great and after you figure it out, extremely nice.

For what it’s worth, I have been using this metronome for the last few years at home, in music college, on the road, and while privately educating classes/individuals around the world. It has helped me improve my sense of time and time feel—which is a totally different thing to focus on for those of you still getting into different ways of practicing with the metronome.

Great metronome
Great metronome with important features. Only complaint is that on iPhone while the metronome is running, the phone doesn’t recognize it as active and the screen turns off. I can’t see it throughout a practice run and have to re-unlock my phone to look at it again.
Drassssssssss,
As good as it gets.
This metronome application is unbeatable! The interface is extremely simple to use, but it provides a wide array of different tools. This app can be used for anything from a simple metronome, too a more complex time keeping tool to help develop deeper rhythmic concepts. I recommend this app to any musician who is interested in developing their sense of time further.
Judgefunkhaus,
This has a feature that makes this app stand alone
Being able to control the random number of beats left out is the best thing to ever be added to a metronome....ever. I just wish the app would rotate when my device is on it's side. Small annoyance for the best metronome in the world.
Johnny S..,
Simple with a few unique features
Being able to easily input rests and any combination of best groupings make this a must have app. Also, the random mute feature is great when you really want to test yourself and see how well you are internalizing the beat!

Independence
While there are any number of metronomes on the App Store, the killer feature of this one is the customizable randomization of NOT playing every click, letting it act as a reminder instead of a crutch. Helps greatly in internalization of the best rather than relying on an external pulse.
