Rybaldo the Lean,
Such a wonderful way to make music
Since moving from New York to a remote part of the country I had to leave the community orchestra I used to play with. Finding other musicians during Covid was impossible, especially as a wind player. Using Tomplay has been a wonderful way for me to explore the core clarinet repertoire. I love that you can slow down the score and speed it up - it allows me to master the fingerings. Now having spent much time with Tomplay, I have much of the core clarinet repertoire under my fingers. I have found a pianist and now I can bring to the table an advanced set of skills. When we get together I am much further on in my understanding and ability to play the music. Tomplay allows me to do all that embarrassing ground work in isolation before I come to the first rehearsal. I am confident that if there any mistakes are made at the first rehearsal it is not me. Also it’s a great way, after playing the music at the rehearsal, to come back and further refine things that I’ve learned. Because of my annual subscription, Tomplay offers a free transcription service. If there is a piece of music that isn’t available for clarinet but that’s available on another instrument I can request them to create a clarinet version. I could even specify whether I’d like it for A clarinet or B-flat clarinet. It’s a wonderful tool. I love it. I’m so happy that I bought it.
Matt Springer,
Really takes the edge off of the pandemic shut down
I am very glad that I discovered Tomplay. Like many people, I am an orchestra musician who has not been able to play with other people in person since the shutdown begin. Virtual performances are interesting but you’re not playing with other people at the same time. Some of these Tomplay pieces really get you almost there; especially chamber pieces like string quartets. Some of the accompaniments have very synthesized or distorted sound quality, but others sound quite good, and playing the chamber ensemble pieces with the music playing directly from my iPad, despite not being the best speakers in the world, was better than putting an earpiece in my ear because it’s more realistic to have the sound coming from outside. The first time I played a Beethoven string quartet this way, it was such a realistic experience that when I screwed up, I actually instinctively apologized to the virtual people in my iPad! And I have to say, when I got to the end of that first one, I think I got a little emotional… Ludwig would’ve been happy. It’s not perfect, but I’m giving it five stars anyways just because it fills such an important hole.
cello junkie guy,
It’s fun!!
It’s nice being able to hear the music as well as reading the notes to focus on nuances as one learns a new piece of music. Lots of features here that help the musician out, like being able to slow things down, choose what instruments one would like to hear and being able to record and annotate different fingerings and things. I’m both a cellist and classical guitarist so it’s nice to be able to find new music to work on in different areas, and the subscription is great for being able to just download new songs without even thinking about paying for song by song.

The downside that I see is that the sound quality is compromised when slowing down a piece, but I am working off an old iPad for now until a new model arrives in a few days- keep in mind an iPad 4 may not cut the mustard here, and then of course one could also be like me and download lots of songs, play all day and still feel like there’s so much to work on!! But then again, that’s also what makes it fun, by having so much to look forward to practicing. Good times, and I’m happy I downloaded this app
Richard the second,
Best teaching tool ever!!
After eight years of lessons and really trying to play the piano I had pretty much given up. I wasn’t practicing more than a half hour, two or three times a week and just wasn’t enjoying it anymore. Was all set to sell the ol' piano when I chanced upon Tomplay, a couple weeks ago. Wow! Being able to play using the app's orchestral accompaniment feature makes a huge difference. You really feel like you are playing music when you use that feature. And, as for a teaching tool it can’t be beat. I love being able to #1 slow the tempo, #2 use the looping feature to play 1, 2, 3 or more measures over and over again until I get that part of the piece down pat, #3 appreciate the suggested fingering on each piece, #4 the ability to make my own notations and highlights on the music, and then print it off. And the huge music library is very impressive. Thanks to the Tomplay app I’ve gone from practicing sessions of a half hour a couple of times a week to do literally hours a day.
ntwillia,
Manipulative Free Trial/Discount and not nearly as much music as competitor apps
Their website proclaims a 14-day free trial, so I checked it out, and signed up using the Valentines Day promotion. I quickly realized that the sheet music library (40,000+ arrangements) is truly a fraction of what competitors offer for the same price (1,000,000+!!) and I couldn’t find songs I wanted to play. I reached out to cancel the day after I signed up and customer service replied that they don’t offer the 14-day free trial in conjunction with discounts (even though they are both literally running on their website concurrently) and that they refuse to refund me the annual subscription. Regardless of that though, please consider the number of arrangements available as best indication of which app to go with (not Tomplay). I regret my decision and am stuck paying for it. You’d think they would refund me in order to not get this 1 star review… but I’ve just read several other reviews about deceptive billing practices (no renewal notifications, just charging you, no refunds). Such a shame companies like this still exist that just point to their policies (“you knew this when you signed up”) instead of behaving decently to take care of customers who might be open to signing up again in the future when the product improves.
franchezzo,
Great learning tool.
Nicely designed app and very effective tool for music practice. My main interest is classical piano and the major composers are well represented. Most scores have two different audio tracks of real (not midi) instruments to choose from. I like that you can choose between fully annotated score with fingerings and score with no annotation. One thing I wish for is a wider range of tempo adjustment. The app only allows you to slow down to 75% of the original tempo, and some of the tempos are quite brisk. I understand that slowing the tempo too much compromises the quality of the audio playback, but when I am practicing that is not as important to me as being able to play cleanly and keep good rhythm. Also I must amend my earlier review in which I complained that I was not able to restore my previous purchases and was getting no response from the developer. I'm not sure of the cause of the communication failure but they have reached out to me and the problem is resolved. Thank you Tomplay!
Pianogrlnw,
Some pros and some cons
I am a pianist who plays duets and chamber music. I recently downloaded the Schubert Fantasy for 4 hands. The sound quality is pretty bad and sounds like it was recorded digitally by a computer in a very lively room. There is no expression in the playing so I am using it strictly to get the rhythm right and fitting it in with the other part. I’m using a bluetooth headphones to help improve the sound but it’s still not very good. There are a few errors in how the score is played but, for the most part it is accurate.

This app is useful for me to hear how the two piano parts fit together, especially since there are polyrhythms in each part and between the two parts. I feel I have a tutor sitting next to me which is useful since I get together with my duet partner only a couple times a month.

Improvements could be made in the offerings. The Schubert Fantasy is the only advanced 4 hand piece offered. It would be helpful if you could fast forward through the score rather than scrolling through lots of pages. The slowest tempo on the metronome is 50. Would be helpful if it went lower.

Greatest music teaching app
I just want to spread the good news that I’m just learning to play the clarinet and by utilizing theThe scores and music within the app I am able to have learned three songs from the catalog on my clarinet. I wish this app was around about six years ago when I started to get interested in learning how to play music and not that my music teacher was anything other than spectacular I just needed some more input exploration in the music world and this app does give that to me so I am going to read this five stars and A+ A+ A+ a I wish this app was around about six years ago when I started to get interested in learning how to play music and not that my music teacher was anything other than spectacular I just needed some more input exploration in the music world and this app does give that to me so I am going to read this five stars and A+ A+ A+ A+
Lojo2006,
Warning! Beware of their billing procedures.
I purchased this program under the App Store and did not like it. The program is not user friendly when compared to others that I have. I canceled, then read that they were making improvements so I went to the website and signed up for a year to see what improvements and hoping they would improve. I signed in several times only to find the program very awkward with no ability to change layouts and other adjustments. I decided stop using. Skip forward a year. I get a notice that I had been charged for another year. I contacted their customer service to request a refund, since I never used the program. The response was that I had to cancel 24 hours before renewal and that “you agreed to our terms when you signed up on our website”. I’m sure this is quoted to everyone as they pocket all of the money from renewed subscriptions that people never notice. They did not send a notification of renewal and I believe this is done purposely to keep the funds coming in. This way of doing business is deceptive and I believe is pushing the limits of being legal.

Great app — one more feature would help
As a beginner on the saxophone who does not yet know how to read music, I have to annotate sheet music with the names of each note. I’ve been doing that efficiently by writing on printed copies. But this app limits how many copies you can print. Nevertheless, the app is helpful for learning because it has background music and you can slow it down. If only there was an option to have the names of the notes automatically annotated above or below the staff. I can go through and do it manually— it has annotation tools—but it is time consuming. If only for this feature I’m confident I could grow to love it even more and give it five stars. Also, the iPad version has trouble saving my annotations—it gets stuck on saving and I have to force quit. Luckily it saves my work but each time I do this it creates another score (I have one named “Notes_1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1.” So this seems to be a bug that needs fixing. (I’m using a one year old iPad Pro and I’ve tried deleting the app and re-installing).
