LuddyPuppy,
Has changed the way I do my studying.
First off, this app is amazing in comparison to trying to use the mobile site. I am continually impressed with the updates that also continue to come to the application, my recent favorites being darkmode, the hiding of examples English translations during lessons, and probably more than I can’t even remember. I am a huge iPad Pro 12.9” user, and this has full featured split screen and side app support!!! AAAAA, literally amazing. This means I can easily have Tsurukame off to the side to reference while I use a note taking app like Goodnotes in the primary, larger section of the screen. I lunge for my iPad Pro now everytime I get a WaniKani notification, because this app has truly made studying fun and more relaxing. No more looking up and down from monitor to notebook while I try to practice writing, it’s all right there. On one.

BUT... could we maybe see some Jisho integration where stroke order is shown on the lesson pages and maybe review screens when you get an item wrong? Or a drop down to show it in those screens? That would literally make this app 100% feature complete for me. Take my money. (Like actually though, can I donate somehow?)
Leviathan,
Spectacular app with hiragana/katakana confustion
Amazing app. I absolutely recommend this for anyone using WakiKani.

That said, this app creates some confusion between hiragana and katakana. When typing words by the kana, I expect to see the hiragana for most of these words. Instead, the corresponding katakana is displayed when I type using an English iPad Magic Keyboard. It doesn’t affect whether my answer is correct or not, but it’s an annoyance. Also, it seems to do this for Kanji but not vocabulary. I can remove my iPad from the Magic Keyboard and switch to a Japanese keyboard, but this isn’t how I intend to use the app and my iPad. Likewise, in places where I’m reading the furigana it also displays the katakana rather than the hiragana. These two related issues seem like an error of the app (as opposed to user error.)

*Update - The devs have informed me there is a setting for this. Now I just feel silly. Thank you for the response!
Jitaneko,
Best Companion App for Wanikani
Very convenient and easy to use, with no excessive flairs. My only suggestion for improvement is regarding the layout for Anki mode. Current design requires three presses to process a review. First press, easy enough, can work anywhere on the screen and proceeds to bring up the answer for you to check against. However, the second press requires pressing the TOP of the screen to bring up the option menu to indicate whether your provided the right answer or not at the BOTTOM of the screen. This requires a great deal of finger traversal across the screen, which makes one handed handing rather cumbersome on large phones (at least from personal experience). An alternative view option requiring less screen traversal would be greatly appreciated, further complementing the convenient nature of Anki mode. Despite this, still an easy 5-star experience :)
Braxton B,
Incredibly fast, easy to type in responses
This app has helped me get the most out of my WaniKani experience. It is convenient, responds quickly to input, and lets you blast through your vocabulary and kanji on the go without having to futz with the clunky browser version.

In a specific way, Tsurukame also accommodates those with comically large fingers with its “allow misspellings” tool, which lets people with big thumbs to type our English responses more easily without having to spellcheck everything we type on a tiny mobile keyboard—something the mobile site would has dinged me for, and has probably set me back numerous times even when I knew the correct answers in English.

There are concerns about using this feature to cheat on your vocabulary but the app still won’t count any input not resembling the official response (not sure if it detects adjacent letters on the keyboard or something but it’s brilliant).
Arkaaito,
The Joy of Kanji
This app is simply a delight to use. Everything I want (including a reviews forecast and other features that would normally require plugins) in a lovely UI that leaves me feeling refreshed.

(Don’t laugh. When you set out to learn over 2,000 characters, that stuff is going to be a *part of your life*. It makes a difference whether that part energizes and renews you or taxes and annoys you.)

Anyway, I love WaniKani but had to set up all kinds of reminders, systems, etc. so that I would remember to use the desktop app. The iPhone app offers convenient reminders and lets me check WaniKani whenever I have to wait in a line or kill some time before an appointment - plus, it wraps it in the aforementioned lovely package. What more could you want?
Ben_unique,
Great app, two suggestions
1. During reviews, I often want to check the details of a kanji that I just got right, but the app only lets you view the details after you complete both the reading and the meaning. For example, let's say I get the meaning right but I know it has multiple meanings, I often want to check those after I got it right to remind myself of its other meanings. For readings likewise, I want to remind myself of the other readings even though I got one of the readings right. Ideally when looking back it would show only the meaning or reading info, depending on what you just did, like how the website splits that between tabs.

2. Editable notes, I often add notes but since I can't in this app I sometimes reach for the website instead when it comes to lessons.

Other than this, having the app notifications to do reviews really changes the game!
Asuna031796,
Would Be Great if I Could Actually See New Reviews/Lessons
I’d love to give it a higher score, but I just can’t. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling the app a few times but I can’t fix a major problem. It almost never updates, so I can’t do my reviews and lessons. As of right now, it’s been telling me I still have 86 reviews and 0 lessons after a level up I finished 4+ hours ago. I did those 86 reviews and my lessons on another app, but it still hasn’t caught on hours later. It doesn’t matter how many times I refresh or close the app, it doesn’t want to show me my new reviews/lessons.

After recently downloading Jakeipuu, I’ve also noticed some of the reviews don’t go through when studied on this app. I liked the interface well enough, but if I can’t use it because it won’t fetch the new info, there’s nothing I can do. Will probably have to delete it soon and fully transition to Jakeipuu.
yardsard,
Love it! Makes using Wanikani even better!
I have a suggestion/tiny complaint but I'll start with the good first: I love this, the amount of options in the settings make having a Wanikani subscription even better! Can't use it without this app! I use an IPad with a pencil and I put this app and a note-taking app side-by-side as I'm studying, so there’s no moving back-and-forth between my device a physical notebook. Now for the suggestion, I would love for an option to be able to have the different readings labelled plainly in the kanji's overview, like: “Kun:もと On:ほん”. instead of just the current system where on'yomi readings are just written in katakana. I often forget, or I don’t process the difference at first when reading them.
Chrokeefe,
Updated review: Love this app!
I used to absolutely love this app. The interface is great and runs smoothly. But, for some reason after the last update I’m unable to type っ (the small tsu). If I type “xtsu” it just gives “xつ.” It is way too much of a pain to switch to the Japanese keyboard or copy and paste a small tsu when you’re going through literally hundreds of flash cards. I really hope they fix this because this was by far the best WaniKani app out there but now I can’t even use it without getting frustrated.

5/9/22: The developers responded and instead you can type “tt” to get the small tsu. This is great! I can’t recommend any other app for WaniKani more.
Antiboolez,
Truly an amazing app, but the latest update contains a slightly confusing feature
Maybe I’m the only person who has this problem, but I keep getting confused while looking at the stats for the previous level, since they’re now marked “current level,” and my *true* current level is marked “next level.” Can this be changed to “previous level” and “current level”? I hate to complain about anything here, though, as this app is an incredible gift to Wanikani users. I can say 100% that if I didn’t have this app, I would not be using Wanikani every single day (which I have been, sometimes for hours).
