Dear friends!
I'm excited to introduce Robokana 1.2, hope you will enjoy it! Besides plenty of additional cool features, I also tried to make navigation within an App more straightforward and intuitive, so the interface has changed significantly. Though if you feel that the old version was better, please email me about it to [email protected]

Thanks a lot to everyone who helped me to improve the App by reporting the issues. Your feedback is very important and highly appreciated!

List of new features:
- added Dakuten & Handakuten sets
- create custom sets of characters
- new calligraphic brush with customizable color and size
- variable speed of hint animation
- easier navigation between groups
- undo last written stroke
- navigate to previous/next task

Other significant changes:
- Learn & Practice have been merged into one mode. The App will switch automatically from learn to practice when you made enough successful attempts for each letter of the group. In addition, you can switch mode manually in the settings, which are available on the writing screen (tap on gear at bottom-right). Once you've manually adjusted the mode, it will not be changed automatically anymore for the group.
- Exam mode stays separate and is available via the button "test your skill"
- Sometimes it happens that artificial intelligence utilized in the App mistakenly declines your correct writings. I want to minimize the frustration caused by this. Now, if your scribble is not accepted by the robot in exam mode, the App will ask you to choose 1 out of 6 characters. Then, your attempt considered as failed only if you pick incorrectly.

Xaveice,
The Best of the Best.
I’m rarely compelled to write reviews but this app is just so good that I had to. If you wanna master hiragana and katakana, this is probably the most efficient system and best design I’ve ever seen for this process. Most apps will make you do shallow recall where they show you a character and you have to pick the right roumanji or type it in, which isn’t that efficient from a memory standpoint. This app makes you recall how to write them with the correct stroke order…which other apps do, but the difficulty curve is perfect, which no other app seems to get right. You learn each in a group (5 characters per group) and it starts by ghost tracing the character which you then have to trace in yourself while the character is visibly on the screen. Then it moves to tracing it for you and then making the trace disappear so you have to memorize what it looked like and then draw, and then finally no tracing where you have to recall it yourself. Each round takes about 10 to 15 minutes so the recognition really gets burned into your brain.

Can’t stress this enough, the design and strategy of this app is AMAZING. Completely worth unlocking the paid version. Thanks y’all. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
FACE (((o(*゚▽゚*)o))),
Amazing but so annoying
I love this app, I’m taking Japanese 1 this semester and it’s helped me memorized things on the go. The only thing that just annoys me so much is the fact that if you don’t get the stroke order perfectly but know the character it resets your progress little by little. Then I just have that one stroke order stuck in my head slowly forgetting the one I previously memorized. Then there’s the fact that if you have different devices even if it’s linked to the same iTunes account it won’t save the progress to the other device. But those are my only complaints. You guys should make an app or section for kanji too, would definitely buy 😆!
Kaela M,
Love this app! But.....
I really love this app. It’s super helpful, and you really get to know the Japanese characters by the time the test comes around. However.... I think it needs to be fix just a little bit for the character “hi” in hiragana... you have to be super accurate for it to mark what you did as correct. I haven’t been able to finish that section because it keeps repeating “hi” over and over again, and I can only get it super accurate so many times... and e more you get it wrong the more it undoes you’re progress, and I should only have three more to do till the exam, but I get it wrong once or twice and now I have 5 more to do... that character is super sensitive... please fix it! And hopefully no other characters are like that!
quailnight,
pleasantly suprised !
i commonly forget the stroke order of kana characters and i mix them up often. i was looking for a good app that has me write the characters over and over to drill them in my brain. this app absolutely delivers ! very good price point for what is being offered and i really like the brush that is used. most apps just give you a monoline brush tool that makes everything you write look rather.. unpleasant. the brush in this app makes my writing look a lot better. i love that little detail. the AI isn't too strict from what i've seen, it has messed up a few times but i can't really be too upset about it, it's AI after all. and regardless, it performs well. i really appreciate this app !! (╹◡╹)
DidasterJJ,
Blown away by this app’s quality
I don’t write reviews normally, but this app was so good I had to. After being frustrated by duolingo refusing to teach me kanji, I downloaded this app to finally learn kanji correctly. It is difficult, but I am ACTUALLY learning kanji, instead of just guessing. The fee for premium is only $5, and it’s a one time fee(no annoying subscription) and it’s very much worth it. This app is simple, well designed, and self paced, no pop up’s or ads or gold coins to collect. In one day, I’ve learned 10x what I would’ve learned through duolingo. Pair this app with a grammar app to actually learn Japanese.
YustinR,
perfect hands-on studying approach
This app really has everything you need to learn the kana. The immediate response totally beats writing the letters alone by hand and checking your own work. The AI uses the perfect combination of strict recognition to make sure you really are getting the character right and lenient to account for human inconsistencies and handwriting. The drill mode makes it easy to learn and the exam mode makes it easy to refresh and reinforce. And the robot is super cute.

I have other apps for helping me study and recognize the kana, but when it comes to actually learning to write each letter, Robokana is the only app you need!
JayC99,
Love this app!
I love this app! It’s beautiful and it does exactly what you need to learn the hiragana and katakana, including stroke order. Give it a try. You start following along and slowly it takes away the guides until you’re doing it yourself. Come back every day and you’ll notice how much you’ve learned. I think it is perfect for absolute beginners so I’m giving it 5 stars. For more advanced learners, I would like the ability to turn off the romaji and more quizing options, such as a random mix of characters, including mixing the hiragana and katana together.
OK THE NAME IS TOOKEN,
Just started and I’m already learning a lot
So I got this app today and I’ve been doing it on and off and I’ve learned a I e o u in hiragana and the same in katakana and I just learned ka ki ke ko ku in hiragana, I can write them and I remember their names too! This app is fun too and it shows the pronunciation. I love it and I haven’t paid for it but the paying is cheap only 6 dollars and that’s not a subscription it’s just pay now unlock the rest forever. And this app has KANJI too. Kanji kanji kanjiii eek! Best Japanese writing app I’ve ever used.
PokemonNarwhal,
great app, too strict on writings
i love this app! i learned all of hiragana already but was having some troubles with katakana for some reason. i read about some good apps for katakana, and this was on the list. i downloaded the app, tried out the first set of katakana and hiragana, and bought the full sets. it’s such a helpful app!
my one complain is that the AI built into the app is WAY too strict, but i mean it’s an AI, it’s programmed like that. but, i draw タ、チ、ケ or anything else and it’s not 100% perfect, i get it wrong, making the statistics insane and not correct.
overall, i give this app 4.5/5 with only one main flaw. amazing app, keep it up! (also, great price!(〃ω〃) )
A bad app,
Wish it wasn’t anal about stroke order
My handwriting is very neat, I even use a stylus to ensure it is; and yet even when I trace perfectly over the sample lines, if I don’t do so in the exact stroke order which the app insists upon, it is marked wrong. This is frustrating during practice/“learning,” but when the quiz mode is activated, it’s even more frustrating because without the guidelines you’re second guessing whether your character really is too ugly or incorrect, or whether it’s perfect but merely not in the app’s preferred stroke order.
