Description

Unfolding Space was conceived by Julieta Aguilera as an immersive malleable environment for the CAVE virtual reality theater where body gestures would alter the structure of the space surrounding the user. The iPad and iPhone versions of the piece give the user a small dynamic window into that world. Unlike the iPad and iPhone versions, the CAVE version of this application allowed you to move though an endless grid of tesseracts.

Unfolding Space is an interactive experience where the three dimensional shadow of a four dimensional textured grid is unfolded through gesture. Moving though this fluid grid seeks to evoke the experience of walking through a labyrinth that opens and closes its corridors at will, so the viewer is never trapped as long as he/she can master the form. In other words, "Unfolding Space" shows a structure that responds to motion as if the viewer was wearing space itself.

Julieta's idea reflects on how we assimilate the physical space that surrounds us into mental spaces, and is based on architectural, pictorial, and mathematical works in human history such as Gaudi's structures, Japanese gardens, Polynesian navigation, religious iconography, and knot theory. She was inspired by her mother's dream of being trapped in a labyrinth, and wanted to recreate that environment while giving the user the possibility of finding a way through.

Loonaticky,
Something Special
Folding Space was one of the first apps I bought for an iPad. Don’t remember which one, I keep thinking I’ll find the answer down one of the infinite number of corridors I can explore.

Like one of the other reviewers I am delighted that this app has been kept active. Most of the apps that I get the message “won’t work with iOS 11” when I try to start I just delete it and forget it. Not so with this particular app.

I find it mesmerizing and sad I never saw the full version.
MZinMPCA,
Love this app
I've had this for years. Have made amazing iPhone wallpaper with it. It's great for a visual (rather than audio) meditation. I am very glad it's still with us!
Ztormbringer,
So much more than it first seems
The first review I saw started with "Pointless" I couldn't agree more. The thing is it is not supposed really to HAVE a point in my estimation. I downloaded and immediately opened it and after a few seconds of getting oriented to the controls and what they did, how they affected the functioning I let it run. I was mesmerized. As an artist I was seeing constructs I wanted to save. Unfortunately it seems not to have that ability. But I could feel my understanding of the relationship of spaces changing as I watched it evolve the "design" I had created. Some people seem not to have understood that it doesn't actually "DO" anything, except expand your mind and please your eye as it rotates or moves spaces through an infinitely evolving set of relationships. If you must have some reference point as to what it does then perhaps the idea of a kaleidoscope might give you a very limited starting place, but like no kaleidoscope you've ever seen. The engine in this free app is a technical marvel. Download it, it's free after all, play with it a little bit to set up a random set of spatial orientations then just sit back and watch it run. You'll feel a constant tug on your spatial senses and visual ideas. This one I'm keeping!
Reduced Piano,
hypnotic
I just keep coming back to this app. interesting, immersive evolving environments that I have a hand in developing. large, fluid architecture - haven't felt yet that I've been in the same place twice. darker, ambient, low volume soundtrack makes for an edgier feeling, could use some volume control for people that want a more viscereal experience.

I'm speculating that the iPhone might be one of the most stared at objects of the decade, along with computers and tv sets. the use of eyes in unfolding space is the object staring back at you - an intelligent and provocative move by the designers.
CrzydgldyFAR,
Sleep help for me and can save images
I have serious insomnia issues, and by lowering screen brightness and watching this app run I can actually fall asleep. I find it very relaxing, just as much as watching fish in a tank.

Ztormbringer, on iPad the little camera icon at the bottom of the screen while you are using the app saves the current screen to your photos after you grant initial access.

And you're right, it is a very entertaining app and you can't beat that for free.
Boltactiomaardvark,
Not just any app
This app is more than what it appears to be: it allows you to interact with the fourth dimension in a most unique way. This is interactive art at it's best, people. I believe that simply "playing" with this app may effect your consciousness in a profound way. As for those who don't "get it", I encourage you to consider that the very point of this app is inherently void of objective. If any objective exists, it is not found in the future but in the present unfolding of experience itself. Thank you, Andrew, for this brilliant piece of work.
visualme,
Mesmerizing and beautiful
I was mesmerized by this app the first time I opened it, and continue to return to it for relaxing and new perspectives. To me it is a continuing unfolding of dynamic modern art - beautiful colors and interesting shapes - and I thoroughly enjoy it. Fun to have such creative art flow in the palm of my hand. I have never written a review of an app before, but I couldn't not comment on how much I am enjoying this one.
TheReviwer666,
Pretty nice app
Whoever said to make an option where you can take a picture of the current view, you're right but you could also press the home and lock button at the same time.
thejonespack,
Not sure what to make of this.
I understand how to move around and change perspectives, but can I actually manipulate or change the shape myself? I still am not sure if I'm doing anything or if its automated. I would enjoy this more if I knew all it had to offer. Unfortunately, instead of any actual useful information, most of the reviews are people who have no idea what this does or jerks that say if it must be explained to you then you aren't intelligent enough to play.
Good Boy 1999999999999990,
Fun and entertaining
It is an awesome app! The things I don't like are that I read "labyrinth" and that it moves at will. When it said "labyrinth" I thought if you walked forward, your views would change and you would go that way. I was very disappointed. :( It also doesn't move at will like I read in the description. Please try and add one of those features, or at least make yourself able to move another direction besides up. AND THOSE OF YOU HOW SAY IT IS POINTLESS, YOU ARE WRONG! 😠
