Description

The "Voice Meter Pro" app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, is a simple, but effective app that helps children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD's), voice disorders, or any other child (or adult) monitor the volume of their own voice in a Fun and Engaging way.

Children with Asperger’s and other ASD’s often have difficulties producing the appropriate voice volume in different settings. Some children on the autism spectrum speak too quietly. Others speak too loudly. Still others do not compensate adequately for the social milieu or ambient noise level.

Understanding abstract concepts, such as the volume of one’s voice, can be difficult for children with ASD's. It’s well understood that adding a visual component to the otherwise abstract concept can often be very helpful for individuals with ASD.

OK so how does the app work?

Well….if a child is talking to quietly a blue background with a cartoon character struggling to hear is displayed. If a child is talking too loudly the background changes to red and the character puts it’s fingers in its ears. If the volume level is acceptable a green background with a smiling happy character is displayed.

• The on screen “volume thermometer” dynamically displays the volume level as it changes.

• There’s a "Sensitivity" slider so the adult can adjust the volume sensitivity to suit both the user and the environment.

• There’s also a "Dampening" slider. This helps avoid the meter bouncing around in between words by introducing a slight delay before any movement is shown on the “volume" thermometer.

• To give the user total control over the app the Upper and Lower limits of the "Green" (acceptable volume area) can now be adjusted by the user.

• For convenience the app works in both portrait and landscape modes on all the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

• the iPhone version of the app has a switch to enable the iPhone to vibrate should the upper threshold level be exceeded for longer than 4 seconds.

We want to make this app the very best it can be and to this end we have included a feedback form inside the app for users to submit any issues or suggestions as to how it can be improved.

Why not download the app and give it a try?...... you might find it a very useful tool.

Following user feedback we have increased the size of the animated graphic and added a feature on the iPhone version for the iPhone to (optionally) vibrate, if the maximum threshold value is exceeded for over 4 seconds.
We have also included a few bug fixes and optimized the app for the newer Apple devices.
Please keep the feedback coming, you can email us directly from inside the app. We respond to all comments and it really does help us improve it's usefulness for you.

We fixed a bug where, if "Auto Lock" was set on your device, then the app would not override this when in use. Thanks to OrdinaryMum for the feedback. If you have any ideas how the app can be improved, or want to report a bug, please use the Feedback form in the App to let us know what you think, suggest new features, or to report any bugs. We do listen to users and your suggestion for a new feature could well be implemented in the next release.

We have made some usability improvements as well as some "under the hood" improvements. We have addressed the issue of the app crashing on opening for a small number of users....sorry about that guys! Thanks for all the positive comments, and do please use the Feedback form in the App to let us know what you think, suggest new features, or to report any bugs. We do listen to users and your suggestion for a new feature could well be implemented in the next release.

Thanks to all those who have provided such great feedback. The improvements below are a result of us listening to user feedback. Please keep the feedback coming (from inside the app), we want to make it the very best it can be.

Adjustment for the Upper and Lower Values of the "Green Area" (the acceptable volume). This now gives the user total control over the sensitivity / performance of the app. Special thanks to Charlotte Rupnow for this suggestion.

Blyn3D,
Great for teaching vocal intensity control
I’ve used this app many times with the children I work with. I like the customization features that allow me to change sensitivity settings. The only change I would like to see added is a bell or vibrate feature when the meter is out of the green zone. Otherwise, great app!
Harriska2,
Needed serious adjustment
With sensitivity at 100% and dampening at 0%, I got it to work on my ipad pro 12.9. At default settings, I had to scream at the mic to even register.
Awaejyg,
Great app
Although it takes a bit to get used to the features (dampening, thresholds, and sensitivity), once you get them, the app runs pretty flawlessly.

App developer has been awesome at responding to emails and feedback. Excited about the upcoming updates to the app!

I just bought this App to use with a student who is not aware of his voice volume. I did not have any problems opening the App or adjusting the sensitivity. I have tested it on myself and am excited to try it with my student. The green range for appropriate voice is a little too big, but other than that I think this App will be very helpful.
JHBFSP,
HELP!!!!
My app crashes every time the meter hits the green. I couldn't find an email address anywhere to get support. My IOS is compatible and I have cleared the cashe, but it still crashes. I need help or a refund.

Updated review:
Fantastic app and development team! It was the first time I'd contacted support for an app and was so pleased with the quick response and genuine interest in my suggestion. The fact that my suggestion was actually incorporated it into an update is such a bonus...especially for my students:
I am beyond thrilled to report that T LOVED using her "green" voice this morning! She couldn't take her eyes off the meter and repeatedly stated "no blue - yes green" as we got further into today's activity.
Subsequent sessions yielded similar results: "T" is already beginning to generalize using her "green voice" in other school settings. The visual has been critical to her success. "I" is another student that now puts forth much more effort to increase his volume when using the app during therapy sessions. I highly recommend this app!!
htfgjopitsvhkoo,
We love this app!!!!!
My son has autism and if he talks, it is very quiet. We have been working on prosody for years. This app is very motivating. Great tool. Highly recommend it for speech therapist and music therapist. 10stars.
Speekingeasy,
Simple and effective
This was just what I was looking for. I am a speech pathologist working with a post high student who really struggles monitoring his vocal volume. I love the visual and so easy to use!
CCC SLP,
App won't open
Just bought this app because it looked more kid-friendly than other volume meters. It won't open and I'm feeling like a sucker because it was not a free app. Tried to write for app support but that page also wouldn't open. Hoping they'll fix it!
SLP 7,
Scam
This app does not open. It does not even deserve one star. It looked like a great app but when I went to open it, it immediately crashed. I want my money back!
