Description

Volotic is an experimental nonlinear sequencer by artist Scott Garner. What does that even mean? It means a fun way to create songs for everyone, with no musical experience required.

In Volotic, you compose a song by arranging a selection of "towers" on a grid. Each tower has a different function for creating beats, modifying beats or triggering instruments.

Here are some points with bullets next to them:

• Over fifty tower types with more on the way.
• A selection of demo compositions to get you started.
• No musical experience is required, preset scales and arpeggios keep things sounding nice.
• Manual tuning for advanced control.
• 3D sound—drag your music to focus on different sections.
• Easily record and share your composition with Everyplay.
• Tons of new towers and handy features in Plus Mode.

Volotic was selected for inclusion in the App Store Best of 2015. Neat!

Version history

1.0.17
2016-10-28
This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

The previous version of Volotic had a bug that resulted in a child crying. Hopefully this version will not make any children cry. If you ever see or hear a crying child, it is probably because they need to update their apps.

Also, I updated a bunch of under-the-hood stuff and hopefully didn't break every single thing.
1.0.10
2016-03-22
• Lots of internal updates that hopefully made things better instead of worse.
• New Portal towers in Plus Mode—beats entering any "A" tower will emerge from all "B" towers and vice versa.
• New Pattern towers in Plus Mode—these towers pass or block beats according to a set pattern.
• I made the thing that asks for money slightly more annoying. Sorry. I need money to buy food and socks.

Please note: This release of Volotic is perfect and there are no bugs or shortcomings. If you find any bugs or shortcomings, they were probably added maliciously by the FBI through a secret backdoor.

So many new things that I've almost certainly broken something…

• iPhone support! Now Volotic can be tiny and live in your pocket.
• Plus Mode, with dozens of new towers, save functionality and more on the way.
• If you purchased save functionality in the past, you get Plus Mode free.
• Bug fixes, refactoring, optimizations, performance tweaks and all of the other stuff you see in every App Store update.

In return for all of these changes I ask that you…

• Call your mom.
• Clean up the crumbs on the counter.
• Rate and review Volotic.
• Check out my other work at www.scottmadethis.net.

FluffyPlayer/Kanto,
Definitely good idea
This is a very good idea! However I do have a few suggestions:

-Music File exporting (because some people don't know what you mean by Yosemite, all I can think of is the park...)
-Advanced Controls for towers (make it so you can edit the towers to your liking and cut back on making so many towers. Controls include tone, volume, reverberation, etc)
-Playback control (control play, pause, and stop of the music. Can help it fine tune the music being created)

A few have already been suggested but another person agreeing and adding to the demand may give you help on what you should be focusing on/do next.
andy_has_no_idea,
Seriously terrible
No instructions. No sound(!) (yes I'm unmuted and the sound is maxed) and no play button. No save functionality unless you pay. Not that it matters since you can't hear $*%t coming from my new iPhone 7 plus. Lame. Don't even bother.

Edit: found the instructions buried under "app support" in the app store. They are useless.
whyshouldi?,
Lost any ability to save waves or any files sharing.
And no controls for background audio.
But So Sad!,
Love it!
This app proposes a much more fun way to create music!
Eriptron,
More work than it’s worth.
Very simplistic and frequently monotonous.

Pretty much everything you come up using this app is going to sound very similar (download the app and check out the demos). This is due in part to the nature of the type of interface in use in this and app, and many other app like it in the iTunes store. Unfortunately this block grid with modules to be placed on the grid to produce or modulate the sound style of interface makes compositions that just too rigid and repetitious for my ear. While a few additional controls would help ease the problems, a way to change the tempo and volume would be a start, for these types of apps are interesting for about 15 or 20 minutes and that's about it.
TheRingess,
Cute App, Needs some new features to make it a killer app
I'm enjoying playing with this app; I would recommend it to friends. Though I have a list of features I would like to see in future versions.
1. I want to be able to change the frequency of the emitters; especially relative to each other. I can then create complex rhythms. This would necessitate a "stop/restart" feature so that I can ensure that everything syncs up.
2. I definitely want to be able to assign instruments to different channels so that I can create stereo effects.
3. I want to change the volume of an instrument.
4. I want a "record" feature that allows me to save to an mp3.
5. Want to be able to share my creations with others.

As I mentioned it's a cute fun app. I have a distinct feeling it could be a killer app.
Thanks.
Plausibility,
Fun for me anyway
Overall enjoyable.
Unsure why some recent users find it challenging, in a sea of professional mixers this one seems pretty accessible in my view. Also doesn't hold your hand no, but I figured out soon enough. Very colorful way of making music leisurely without a lot of extra jazz. Good for experimenting with sound.
Rguy342,
Needs volume Control
I love this app! Only thing that needs is volume control for the individual elements to make sure one doesn't stand out too much. Also, a wider range of instruments and tones would be nice!
UserSeven,
Promising, But Needs Additional Features
I've enjoyed this app, but incorporating additional features would make this a killer. The key new features: create ability to export files as MP3 or video, allow sampling of sounds to create customizations, build a community to allow sharing of designs, and adding basic help features/files for novices. Still, worth downloading now.
